Employees At Verizon On Mt. Hermon Road Get Nailed!

You know how we've all been hearing about people stealing copper and all sorts of metal anywhere and everywhere possible? GET THIS!

An Employee of Verizon got off work yesterday and went to their care and started it up. Immediately they knew something was seriously wrong as the EXHAUST was extremely loud and just not right. It certainly didn't sound like it did when they got to work.

Nevertheless, someone stole their catalytic converter off their exhaust system, RIGHT THERE IN THE VERIZON PARKING LOT!

Yep, all the kind of stuff you're NOT hearing about in the Daily Times, yet you're getting it here first on Salisbury News. The cool part is, you will be hearing about it because we've grown so much that everyone else doesn't have a choice but to keep up with us as Salisbury News is setting the bar when it comes to what's going on locally.

Businesses and Parking Lots are going to need to step up security, even if it means policing the lots every 30 minutes on your own. Remember Folks, GET TAG NUMBERS!

UPDATE: It happened at Outback last night too!

you might not have to, the scrap yards recently are asking a few more questions on sketchy things brought to them. the converter probably got them $100.00 or so, this converter would not be paid as tin, scrap, etc..., they probable had a receipt specifically for the converter, in its own catagory. there might be a paper trail, hard though...

My friend is selling his truck and sometime in the last couple of weeks had the exact same thing. Its not just in business parking lots--its in peoples' front yards!

most all scrap yards make a copy of your drivers licsense now, most dont pay seperate for converters. They're sometimes taken apart, the guts saved and halled to yards in Balt, and Philly. 4yr ago 3 55gal barrels full brought around 3grand
They have preshious metal in them, titanium.

How long does it take for someone to do this? Are we talking 5 min orr 30 min?

i tell you if maryland will stop acting like woosy's. legalize concealed weapons for citizens, a lot of these problems will move on to where the pickings are easier

if we are allowed to defend ourselves anyway we can, pepper spray whatever, the crooks will get to feel like the victim, instead of the criminal, and move the hell on before they get killed

i'd just as soon poke their eyes out with an ice pick then drag them down the rail road tracks, but what the heck, whatever works

With the right tools, this can be done in 2 minutes max. I agree if the Peoples Republic of MD would let us defend ourselves, we'd see less of this horse dung.

Don't wait for MD to allow it. DEMAND IT NOW. Next week all the politicians and Barries crew will be in Crisfield, there is your perfect opportunity to nail the governor on this subject. Enough hammers and the nail has to go through the board. Know what I mean?

If the criminals know all the citizens can carry they'll think twice, believe that. Myself, nothing like a ballpeen hammer or a baseball bat, either will get the job done.

I had the scrap contract from the GSA at NASA Wallops from 1993 to 1994 and let me tell you something.

There are three generations of THIEVES who think its thier diving right to steal 50 lbs of cooper each and every week.

It would not have been so bad if it was one or two people, but at the time it was over 200 people, each stealing 50 pounds (or more) of copper every week... That was when it was "only" .60 cents a pound.

We did an auction in California last weekend and someone stole the air conditioning unit, for... you guessed it the scrap copper & aluminum in the coils and windings.

The thing that gets my goat about stealing an $8,000 air central air conditioning unit is... To remove all the metal will take about 4 hours. If you don't sort and separate the ferrous from non-ferrous you won't get paid squat even in this market.

So this person risks prison to do 4-hours work for maybe a hundred bucks... Heck he would have been better off painting for four hours doing some honest work for the same hundred bucks.

Catylitic converters? They are going for the 2 to 4 ounces of Platinum that is selling for over $1,000 a pound these days.

Still if you have every pulled a catalytic coonverter its not easy even if you are stealing and don't care about thrashing the car.

In California there were HUGE I MEAN HUGE BILLBOARDS that read...

STOP COPPER THEFT

It's gotten ridiculous what people will do these days for a few dollars.

A sign of the times, a sign of the times.

Does anyone know if they are hitting certain types of vehicles? Im sure some vehicles are easier to get to the converter than others.

I heard that SUVs were popular since they have more ground clearance.

would parking backed in against one of the concrete parking space dividers discourage the theft because of access being harder??

what they are getting out of the catalytic converter isn't copper...it's platinum.
