While many people complain about seeing the Homeless locally, some obviously do what they can to survive. I must say however, the Homeless Communities continue to grow larger in Salisbury and once again, NO ONE is doing anything about it.
That being said, what should City Officials do about it? I mean, where will they send them? I believe their thinking is, ignore it and the City won't have to fund finding shelter for these people. You know, out of sight, out of mind!
So how do YOU feel about the Homeless in Salisbury and what do YOU think should be done about it?

With all of the business closures over the past decade its no wonder Salisbury looks the way it looks.
No industry + high taxes = poverty
Apparently our most of our politicos, -(Federal, State, Local) - don't seem to understand the equation.
While coming from the Salisbury-Wicomico Airport right at the end of Airport Road there is a STOP sign. The signage should read with the arrow pointing toward the Salisbury direction:
Poverty - 3 miles
Disaster - 4 miles

The homeless condition is nation wide , but has become more visible in Salisbury because of the increased numbers.It has always been a pet peave of mine to see our government do MORE for outsiders than our own .You know who i'm referring to!!!
Believe it or not, this particular homeless man is quite happy. Although, no one wants to be homeless, but he takes it in stride and actually is a great person to have a conversation with. He would do any labor to show he is a hardworker. As for his dog, the saying is "Man's Best Friend," well in this case it is SO TRUE! That dog wouldn't leave his side, not for one minute. I truly give this pair a hand, because even when times are tough they MAKE THE BEST OF IT!
As I understand it, there IS a homeless shelter, but it closes in April. Perhaps it should be year round? Not sure I'd like the raise in taxes, but it is what it is.
From what I'm told, Gladys' owner is not homeless. He lives in a very modest dwelling, but collects cans to earn money.
I'm happy to see this man (and several others around town) collecting the cans and junk that are around town. They make a buck recycling and the Mayor gets her town cleaned up for free!
There are several homeless shelters, Saint Joeseph House, and charities.
The good ones DO NOT WANT A DIME OF PUBLIC MONEY!!!
If they take the tax dollars then they have to compromise their values or core beliefs.
Its a good thing there are recyling places where one can get cash for cans.
Boss Hogg thank you for your comment. That's actually a great thing to know. Not because of the tax savings, but because they are principled enough to not accept government so that they can function at their own level of standards and beliefs.
If only more agencies were able to live by that example!
I am glad to see at least one try and earn his own way and make himself better by collecting cans. It helps with the trash that you see all along the road ways. Maybe this guy should go and talk to the man that sits under the bridge across the street from the old movies 6. You know the one that just sits and holds the sign, or all the ones that bombard you when your going to your car at night in any of those parking lots on carrol street.
I dont see why we should demand that the government, local or otherwise be forced to deal with it. If this is something that bothers you, or something that pulls at your heart strings...then get off you own ass and invest your own time, funds and hard work into trying to help those that need it, or for that matter may just be happy recycling that big cart of cans. Who are we to pass jusgdement without asking the guy? I sure as hell don't want to be "told" I have to forfiet my hard earned dollars, but would rather choose to contribute. Every one of us needs assistance with something, and the tax game has become so bogged down with special interest of who is in charge and lining their pockets...it is time to redistribute what is in house and then reorganize what's already in place. Then ask each and every one of us what time, effort and fund we are willing to part with for the pure sake of doing our part to better our own community and stop pointing the finger at the government. That is how we got in this mess to begin with. We can't ask them to take care of us and then bitch because we don't like they way did it! Get up, participate, vote, donate a little time, pull together as a community, pick up the trash instead of walking past it...stop the madness!
I started saving my old guitar strings. I have 4 acoustic guitars and bronze bring good money and I'm recycling.
Not exactly sure what bronze is going for but 3 weeks ago copper was $2.50 a lb. Cemetaries are also being hit for bronze at grave sites. That's what gave me the idea to recycle the strings.
Cans are one thing, many things should require proper ID so if the item comes up as stolen they can track down the last person handling it.

all these so called christians around here have the cash to build big glamerous churchs and private schools to keep their kids from the general public they think is shit, but yet their christianity looks the other way at the homeless people. keep up the good work you hipocrit bastards.

My point is all I read from 9.41 is that we need to stop whining and start working together for a common goal. I do not see how that makes me a left wing tight wad either or how that in turn makes you a right wing liberal ass.

It IS the faith based organizations (Joseph House, Christian Shelter, area churches, etc) that not only feed and shelter the homeless, but try to set them on the path of being an active member of society. I know several individuals that have offered homeless men jobs in the area, while volunteering at such shelters actually meeting them, hoping to set them on that path. They are Christians, and as such are called to "love thy neighbor as thyself." And that's exactly what they do. It sounds to me like you have some resentment towards the Christian faith. Perhaps you should spew that rhetoric at some other topic, because as far as the homeless go, you are dead wrong, embarrassingly so.
There are as many reasons why people are homeless as there are people. To expect the governemnt to fix them all is ludicrous...and laughable. The government has a hard time managing the fairly simple issues.
My neighbors church had a program to make dinners for the homeless and then they delivered the food to the area where they were 'living', i.e. under the bridges. The City Council got wind of it and shut them down...they didn't have proper permits, and food handling wasn't being monitored. They even went so far as to claimed the church program was the CAUSE of the homelessness...if they hadn't been taking the food to these places, they wouldn't have been there was their theory (because you know homeless people don't exist in Salisbury). The church has been working on getting the program running again, but seems like everything they do turns into a brick wall.
1;19, if it were up to me i would abolish all religion, i think religion breeds hypocricy, ive seen to many christians act one way in church and do the exact oposite in their lives. maybe you think im way off base, but i dont trust christians further than i can throw them.
I remember that guy from when I lived in Salisbury-he would come through my neighborhood(pretty brave of him!) and he came to my door once looking for cans-I told him he could come get any cans I had in the blue bin whenever he was in the neighborhood and he would come every 2 weeks or so.Why let the city pick it up for free when he can use them and is willing to work to get them?That dog goes EVERYWHERE with him too.He lives somewhere on the Westside but is all over the city cleaning up cans.He works all day long,hot and cold weather.You would never see him laying around getting drunk or begging.Good guy.
I am too young to recall but older readers might remember the "ragmen" of their childhoods-the guy in the town or neighborhood that always collected scrap from you and soda bottles.
I say Maryland ought to do like NY and offer deposits on ALL recyclable containers including glass,plastic as well as aluminum.It would keep our roadsides cleaner and benefit those who collect salvage materials.
My family has helped homeless people and/or those that weren't homeless yet but needed a job etc. Out of the five people helped, all but one took advantage of my family and ripped us off. Two took advantage of my elderly parents to the tune of more than a thousand dollars, and a so-called Katrina victim ripped of my son and his wife after they took them in. Only one Katrina victim was grateful and did not rip someone off. He was a single man who helped out by doing yard work, and as soon as he was able, found a place to live with relatives in another state. I am now reluctant to help people. Sad, isn't it?
He isn't homeless now, but was at one time. He lives at Riverplace off Riverside Drive. He had been going around town toting his "homeless" sign and they told him at Riverplace he couldn't do that anymore. I do see him and the dog picking up cans when it would be so easy to just kick back and let someone else hand it to him. So good for him, he and his best friend have a roof over their heads and a little change in his pocket. I am more than glad and willing to help those who try to help themselves.
to say that NO ONE is helping is a gross misrepresentation of the facts. Were you to research this topic more you would find out there are quite a few people and organizations that work with the homeless populations. There are a number of government agencies that are represented at homeless coalitions and homeless continuums in this area. Homelessness is not a problem that can be solved by any one agency or government entity. The cold weather was originated by an orgainzation made up of a variety of committee members from this community and has worked well over the past few years to keep our homeless population from freezing during the cold winter months. The Salisbury Ministerial alliance is a huge part of the effort as well as all the churches and volunteers that make that effort possible. Until you have all the facts about a topic it is unwise to point fingers and make statements so broad as NO ONE!! I want to applaud all the community members and government employees that work so hard to assist these individuals and families and to the local shelters and non profit agencies who's mission it is to help. Keep up the good work.
Also you shouldnt take pictures of people and label them as homeless with out in fact knowing that they are homeless. Not every person pushing a shopping cart looking a little disheveled is homeless.
This is such a wonderful older man! He never begs...sometimes he has "Donations appreciated" on his cart, but doesn't bug anyone. That dog is his life! One cold winter day, I saw them at Food Lion on Nanticoke Road. She was patiently waiting for him outside. He came out with some food for himself, but he got more for the dog! I stood there and watched him. He took off his coat and laid it down for her to lay on so that she wouldn't be cold. Being so taken aback by his love for her, I went over to him and started talking to him. We stood and talked for about 10 minutes and never in that time did he ask for one dime or tell me how bad he had it. He is just a nice person with a positive attitude who loves his dog.
