Up Sh*t Creek?

What the hell is going on? Two WWTP spills in three days? This is a public health nightmare. The American public is currently living with a heightened sense of awareness relating to the existence of blood, food and water borne pathogens and something like this happens - again and again and again.

I have had conversations with quite a few people recently and we all seem to agree on one thing. The City of Salisbury owes much of its existence to the Wicomico River. And this is how it is treated. I don't think the Mayor personally has anything to do with these spills but she is in charge of this ship. After this many spills, she and her administration must shoulder the responsibility of not only the spills, but also the long and short term effects of the spills. Due to the nutrients released during these spills we are likely to see algea blooms this summer which will steal oxygen from the river and kill fish. When this happens, will we again blame the farmer or will Barrie "accept full responsibility"?

Last week we took our boat from the marina in Salisbury, down the river to the Bay and up the Bay to St. Michaels. What a beautiful harbor. Clean. No floating bottles. Didn't stink. We stayed for a week to celebrate our anniversary. While we were there we couldn't help but think of how lucky the people of St. Michaels were to have such a resource. The attention given to that harbor by its residents reflects in it condition. It creates jobs for the residents, tax revenue for the town, and opportunities for business owners. I couldn't help but think of the wasted resources and opportunities back at my home port - Salisbury - Sh*t Creek. I wasn't even aware of the latest poop spills even as we returned to port on Friday.

In a week when the warning is lifted and I go to my boat for a ride to the Bay, I will make preliminary checks of sea strainers, etc., which require me to come into contact with the river water. There are likely to be pockets of water in the sea strainers which contain bacteria from the recent spills which will not be flushed out by the changing tides. No matter how careful I am an engine room isn't a sterile environment. If I should contract E.Coli, Salmonella, or Hep., will the Mayor "accept full responsibility"? Is it any wonder the number of boats at the marina gets smaller and smaller? Can you expect people to continue to pay $1500.00 a year to keep their boats in a marina that can't deliver fuel and the water is contaminated with fecal matter?

Barry, your legacy will touch the lives of everyone who lives on or near the river for years to come. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Well... William Donald Schafer described the Eastern Shore as an outhouse, and Mayor Tilghman is trying to make sure it smells like one!

There is no need to try to make the mayor feel bad about this whole ordeal, because she simply does't give a damn.Throw her out and what might you get? Louise Smith !! She would be like the difference between the wicked witch of the East and the witch of the West!!

Are you kidding or what, Barrie Tilghman, be ashamed? The woman knows no shame. Anyone that can treat their dying father as she did absolutely knows no shame.

The mayor can expect the taxpayors to bear the burden of all the rotten crap that has gone down during her administration, so why should she care?

If Willie Don had ever met Barrie, he would have used a word other than "outhouse"!

Another problem with Salisbury, what other town do you know, with a river running through it, that lines the river with municipal parking lots? "Hmmm, I got me some waterfront property, I'm gonna park me some cars on it." What morons!

To be on the safe side grand dad you may want to add a little bleach to that water to prevent contracting a life threatening illness. Thanks for the new name, I like it, Upchit Creek.

there was a survey crew at the upper ferry yesterday.I had a chance to talk to the head guy ,and he said they are going to start dredging from marker #44 just above the ferry all the way to salisbury.I guess the salibarrie crew keeps spilling and the feds come in and scoop it up.

Grand Dad, be VERY careful. A guy was fishing across from Market St Inn a few years ago, got some bait or something on his foot, dipped his foot in the river to wash it off. He had a minor cut on his big toe. Next thing you know, he's in PRMC having his toe amputated. TRUE STORY.

Wear a hazmat suit. DON'T TOUCH THAT WATER.

Grand dad try to get the mare to come and syphon that water out of the haul by mouth.

I served on Okinawa many years ago with the Marine Corps and they have open sewage ditches there called Binjo Ditches. Guess our open sewage ditch known as the Wicomico could also be known as a Binjo Ditch??!! What a disgrace!

Grand dad, if you do use bleach to kill the bacteria in that water, if you have chlorine test strips or know someone with a swimming pool that uses chlorine test strips you want it to be at least 150 ppm (parts per million) You don't have to over do it, 150 ppm is sufficient. It only takes a cap full to sanitize around 2 gallons to that level of chlorine.

Please tell us, how did she treat her dying father?
Thanks.

Does anyone know the line of power. If something were to happen and the mayor couldn't do the job, who would be next in line?
Anyone?
