Costly U.S. Campaign Expected In Afghanistan
Decade-long presence could be more expensive than Iraq, analysts say

As the Obama administration expands U.S. involvement in Afghanistan, military experts are warning that the United States is taking on security and political commitments that will last at least a decade and a cost that will probably eclipse that of the Iraq war.
Since the invasion of Afghanistan eight years ago, the United States has spent $223 billion on war-related funding for that country, according to the Congressional Research Service. Aid expenditures, excluding the cost of combat operations, have grown exponentially, from $982 million in 2003 to $9.3 billion last year.
The costs are almost certain to keep growing. The Obama administration is in the process of overhauling the U.S. approach to Afghanistan, putting its focus on long-term security, economic sustainability and development. That approach is also likely to require deployment of more American military personnel, at the very least to train additional Afghan security forces.

Were N.C. Terror Suspect's Stories Exaggerated?
U.S. officials with experience in the Middle East doubt his stories
RALEIGH, N.C. - Authorities believe Daniel Patrick Boyd used tales of fighting the Soviets alongside the mujahedeen to recruit followers into a North Carolina terrorism ring, but U.S. officials in the Middle East while Boyd was there doubt his stories.
The former officials questioned whether Boyd, 39, had any affiliation with the Islamic guerrillas, noting the Soviets had all but left Afghanistan by the time the young, blond Muslim convert arrived from America two decades ago.
Boyd's stories were part of indictment accusing him and seven followers of violent jihad overseas. The indictment claims some of the men were training in military-style tactics and that all were plotting to kill, kidnap and maim in a holy war overseas.

Serious Injury Crash Reported In Kent County
Magnolia- A 66-year old bicyclist from Magnolia named Charlie G. Harris was traveling northbound on South State Street on the right shoulder.
Ms. Cierra Lynn Hurley, 18, of Frederica, was driving in her1997 Toyota Carolla northbound on South State Street approaching the bicyclist.
Ms. Hurley took her attention away from the roadway to swat at a bug that flew into her car. She then drifted onto the shoulder and struck the bicyclist.
Mr. Harris was ejected from his bike and struck his head on the ground. Mr. Harris was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ms. Hurley was not injured.
This crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed as of yet.
The roadway was shut down for approximately two-and-a-half hours.

51 U.S. Soldiers In Iraq Diagnosed With Swine Flu
Iraqi health officials confirm country's first H1N1 death
BAGHDAD - Fifty-one American troops in Iraq have been diagnosed with and treated for swine flu, while another 71 soldiers remain in isolation suspected of contracting the potentially deadly virus, the U.S. military said Sunday.
The figures were released as Iraqi health officials confirmed Sunday the country's first swine flu death.
A woman in the southern holy Shiite city of Najaf died of the disease, raising fears about a possible outbreak among worshippers making pilgrimages to the revered sites.

Anticipating Recovery, Fed Likely To Hold Rates
Central bank may also decide fate of some emergency programs at meeting
With the economy strengthening but still fragile, Federal Reserve policymakers are expected to hold a key lending rate at a record low this week and will weigh whether to extend some programs that were created to ease the financial crisis.
Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and his colleagues also are likely to signal that while the recession is winding down, the pain isn't over.
Though the unemployment rate dipped to 9.4 percent in July — its first drop in 15 months — economists predict it will start climbing again. Many, including people in the Obama administration and at the Fed, say it could still top 10 percent this year.

Baby Born On I-95

State police delivered a baby girl on I-95 this weekend. It wasn't quite what they expected when they finally got a speeding SUV to pull off to the shoulder of the road by Philly International Airport.
The driver told the trooper his wife was in labor and they were trying to get to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in time.
The trooper called for an ambulance and backup. Traffic was tied up because of construction zones so their backup -- Troopers Jean Altomari and Donald Foley -- beat the ambulance and so did the baby.
Mayor Ireton Sends The Following: Passing Of Dr. Alvarado
I write this morning to echo the comments of Peninsula Regional Medical Center President Peggy Naleppa on the passing of Dr. Joe Alvarado. Naleppa said that Dr. Joe Alvarado "was a dedicated physician leader, an outstanding pediatrician and a well loved, admired and respected member of our medical staff." All the strength that my heart can muster goes out to Dr. Alvarado's wife and to his sons, many of whom I taught at St. Francis School. My hope is that all of the lives that Joe Alvarado touched will now reach back and hold his family in thought and prayer. Our community will miss Dr. Joe Alvarado.

Argument Amongst Friends Results In Weapons Charges
Location: Sanibell Circle, Sanibel Village, Rehoboth, Delaware, Sussex County
Date of Occurrence: Sunday, August 09, 2009, at 2:06 a.m.
Suspect(s): Kenneth D. Lewis, 44, of Sanibell Circle, Rehoboth, Delaware
Resume: Shortly after 2:00 a.m. this morning, a private citizen had arrived at his home in Sanibel Village. He got out of his car and heard a disturbance coming from a third floor unit. This citizen responded and found two subjects arguing with one of the men holding a knife- threatening the other.
This investigation revealed Mr. Kenneth Lewis and his roommate had been drinking alcohol, and for a reason neither man could recall, they began to argue. The dispute became heated and Lewis grabbed a knife from the kitchen and threatened his 40-year-old roommate.
Upon the Troopers arrival, the situation was rendered under control and Lewis was taken into custody. He was transported back to Troop 7 where he was formally charged with the following offenses: Possession of a Deadly Weapons during the Commission of a Felony (felony), Aggravated Menacing (felony), Terroristic Threatening (misdemeanor) and Disorderly Conduct (misdemeanor).
Upon arraignment, he was ordered held at the Sussex Correctional Institute in lieu of a $10,000.00 secured bail.
The victim was not injured.

'In God We Trust' Won't Be Added To Florida City Logo
KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Officials in Kissimmee, Fla., blocked an effort to add "In God We Trust" to the city logo, saying the campaign brought too much negative attention -- but a city commissioner vows to fight it.
Commissioner Art Otero proposed the idea because he believes the country is becoming too liberal on issues including homosexuality, abortion and marijuana.
Otero says he has plenty of support, and some residents may start a petition for a voter referendum.
The City Commission withdrew the possible change last week.

Publication of private documents violates ethics

Someone is violating the confidentiality of employees and of Salisbury citizens.The recent publication by The Daily Times of protected documents concerning Salisbury Police Chief Allan Webster raises the questions:
•Who is violating city employee confidentiality?
•What does this person(s) have to gain by doing so?
•Who else is now at risk of having their confidential personnel information violated with the cooperation of this newspaper? (emphasis added)
It has been brought to my attention and verified by me that a local Web site recently has made public some confidential details of a violent crime case that, as far as I know, would only be in the victim's case file or known to members of law enforcement. How did this information come to be public? Will this happen with other private citizens' information? Who stands to gain from making such information public? (emphasis added)
These issues are of far greater concern to the people of Salisbury, whom I was elected to represent and serve, than the erroneous statements and "he said she said" journalism produced by The Daily Times in violation of journalists' and editors' code of ethics.
I urge the mayor and council of this city, this newspaper and all employees of the city to join together to end these violations now to protect all city employees and citizens in Salisbury. No one can have confidence in the legal protection of their private information until this is done.

THE TAKING OF AMERICA
It is no longer Democrat vs. Republican, Liberal vs. Conservative or Socialist vs. Capitalist. What we are now witnessing is an American President and the United States Congress showing utter contempt for the American people and the Constitution. When these elected representatives pass or attempt to pass laws governing our lives, but exempt themselves from its provisions it is reprehensible. It is bad enough when they take junkets paid for by either the taxpayer or lobbyists, but when they use taxpayer funds to purchase luxury aircraft for trips to Paris, Rome, Jamaica or other resorts, it is beyond the pale. They then have the gall to sit in judgment of their own unethical actions.
When a President tells citizens to shut up when they are exercising free speech or sends goons to intimidate the citizens or asks people to inform on folks who disagree with him it no longer is a democracy we live in. When the president decides who shall run private corporations or what car you must buy or what medical tests you can have and which doctors are to decide your well being, it constitutes the beginnings of a dictatorship.
The American people will rise up in righteous indignation to shout, this will not stand. It matters not if the culprit is Democrat or Republican, vote them out. We can no longer tolerate an Attorney General who owes his loyalty to the man that appointed him The loyalty deserves to be, to the law. Congressional ethics should be enforced by the courts with charges brought by an independent Attorney General.
An enlightened electorate should be voting for the person that best represents their views and not rooting for a team like the Yankees or the Red Sox. The country is more important than a team. How absurd is it that we vote for or against a candidate because, on one issue, we don't agree with the party even though the candidate supports our view. Maybe a time will come when voters take the time to learn about a candidate. When that time comes maybe the candidate will discover the wishes of the electorate.

One dark night outside a small town in Minnesota , a fire started inside the local chemical plant and in a blink of an eye it exploded into massive flames. The alarm went out to all the fire departments for miles around.
When the volunteer fire fighters appeared on the scene, the chemical company president rushed over to the fire chief. 'All our secret formulas are in the vault in the center of the plant. They must be saved. I will give $100,000 to the fire department that brings them out intact!
But the roaring flames held the firefighters off.
Soon, more fire departments had to be called in as the situation became desperate. In the distance, a lone siren was heard as another fire truck came into sight. It was the nearby Norwegian Rural Township volunteer fire company composed mainly of Norwegians well over the age of 65. To everyone's amazement, that little run-down fire engine roared right past all the newer sleek engines that were parked outside the plant and, without even slowing down, drove straight into the middle of the inferno.
Outside, the other firemen watched as the Norwegian old-timers jumped off right in the middle of the fire and fought it back on all sides. It was a performance and effort never seen before. Within a short time, the Norse old timers had extinguished the fire and saved the secret formulas.
The grateful chemical company president announced that for such a superhuman feat he was upping the reward to $200,000 and walked over to personally thank each of the brave fire fighters.
The local TV news reporter rushed in to capture the event on film, asking their chief, 'What are you going to do with all that money?'
Vell,' said Ole Olson, the 80-year-old fire chief, 'Da first ting ve gonna do is fix da brakes on dat focking truck!

Four worms were placed into four separate jars.
The first worm was put into a container of alcohol.
The second worm was put into a container of cigarette smoke.
The third worm was put into a container of chocolate syrup.
The fourth worm was put into a container of good clean soil.
At the conclusion of the sermon, the minister reported the following results:
The first worm in alcohol- Dead
The second worm in cigarette smoke - Dead
Third worm in chocolate syrup - Dead
Fourth worm in good clean soil - Alive.
So the minister asked the congregation,
'What did you learn from this demonstration???'

FREE Kitten To Good Home
We when got the kitten he was really in bad shape..nothing but skin and bones and belly full of worms...now we have nursed him back to health he is ready to go to a good home. He is full of personality and he honestly thinks he is a dog. He even growls at my other cat. Plays great with my 2 dogs. I have included a picture of the kitten that we call cheddar. when he found him he was around 6-8 weeks old. There are no stipulations in the House bill to verify income or citizenship. So without mechanisms to verify, the doors are open to all. As is, there is no verification.
Sections 242, 1714 and 1704 need strengthening to ensure that illegal aliens are not recipients of tax payer funded health care plan.

Hoover Dam Bridge
Taking shape, the new bridge at the Hoover Dam
Creeping closer inch by inch – 900ft above the mighty Colorado River – the two sides of a $160 million bridge at the Hoover Dam in America slowly take shape.
The bridge will carry a new section of US Route 93 past the bottleneck of the old road which can be seen twisting and winding around and across the dam itself.
When complete, it will provide a new link between the states of Nevada and Arizona. In an incredible feat of engineering, the road will be supported on the two massive concrete arches which jut out of the rock face.
The arches are made up of 53 individual sections – each 24ft long – which have been cast on-site and are being lifted into place using an improvised high-wire crane strung between temporary steel pylons.
Spectacular: The new Hoover Dam bypass
The arches will eventually measure more than 1,000ft across. At the moment, the structure looks like a traditional suspension bridge. But once the arches are complete, the suspending cables on each side will be removed.
Extra vertical columns will then be installed on the arches to carry the road. The bridge has become known as the Hoover Dam bypass, although it is officially called the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, after a former governor of Nevada and an American Football player from Arizona who joined the US Army and was killed in Afghanistan.
Work on the bridge started in 2005 and should finish next year. An estimated 17,000 cars and trucks will cross it every day.
The dam was started in 1931 and used enough concrete to build a road from New York to San Francisco.
The stretch of water it created, Lake Mead, is 110 miles long and took six years to fill.
The original road was opened at the same time as the famous dam in 1936.
Creeping closer inch by inch – 900ft above the mighty Colorado River – the two sides of a $160 million bridge at the Hoover Dam in America slowly take shape.
The bridge will carry a new section of US Route 93 past the bottleneck of the old road which can be seen twisting and winding around and across the dam itself.
When complete, it will provide a new link between the states of Nevada and Arizona. In an incredible feat of engineering, the road will be supported on the two massive concrete arches which jut out of the rock face.
The arches are made up of 53 individual sections – each 24ft long – which have been cast on-site and are being lifted into place using an improvised high-wire crane strung between temporary steel pylons.

The arches will eventually measure more than 1,000ft across. At the moment, the structure looks like a traditional suspension bridge. But once the arches are complete, the suspending cables on each side will be removed.
Extra vertical columns will then be installed on the arches to carry the road. Folks, I know each and every one of you want to know what's going on with Dr. Alvarado, as do I. However, one Blogger has made it just about impossible to get any updated information and while I refuse to mention their name, I'm sure you can guess who that person might be.
His selfless acts have caused thousands of people to sit on the edge of their seats and while Salisbury News was getting regular updates, the information has come to a complete halt.
I also know there are many rumors as I have been receiving a ton of phone calls, text messages and e-mails asking of what they had heard was true. TWO KILLED IN CARROLL COUNTY PLANE CRASH
(Keymar, MD)—The investigation is continuing into this morning’s plane crash in northwestern Carroll County that took the lives of both persons aboard.
The victims are identified as Robert H. Kociemba, 61, of the 700-block of St. George-Barber Road, Davidsonville, Md., who is believed to have been the pilot, and Letty (nmn) Williams, 66, of the 3800-block of Glebe Meadow Way, Edgewater, Md. The two were said to have been friends.
Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene by members of the Taneytown Volunteer Fire Department. A forensic examiner for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner responded to the scene and ordered the bodies of both victims transported to Baltimore for autopsies.
At about 7:30 a.m. today, Maryland state troopers from the Westminster Barracks were dispatched to the area of Sharrett Road, just off Rt. 194 in Keymar, for the report of an aircraft crash. Arriving troopers found the two-seat aircraft crashed in a cornfield, about one-quarter mile from the Keymar Airpark, a privately owned airstrip southwest of Taneytown.
The preliminary investigation indicates the victims had taken off from the airpark just minutes before the crash. Their destination was unknown. Troopers contacted federal aviation officials who responded to the scene and are conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash.
The aircraft is believed to be a Golden Circle Air T-Bird II, classified by the FAA as a light sport aircraft. The engine and propeller in this type of aircraft are located behind the pilot and passenger.
Troopers learned from the owner of the airpark that Kociemba flew from his airstrip two to three times a week and had rented hangar space from him for about four years. Kociemba was said to have been an experienced pilot.

Mayor Bloomberg calls chopper, plane wreck ‘not survivable’
NEW YORK - A small plane collided with a sightseeing helicopter carrying Italian tourists over the Hudson River on Saturday, scattering debris in the water and forcing people on the New Jersey waterfront to scamper for cover. Authorities believe all nine people aboard the two aircraft were killed.
Another helicopter pilot on the ground at the heliport for Liberty Tours, which operated the doomed sightseeing craft, saw the plane approaching the helicopter and tried to radio an alert to the pilots, police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. The warning wasn't heard or didn't happen in time.

In 1986, Ronald Reagan and Bill Bradley created a legislative miracle. They fashioned a tax reform that stripped loopholes, political favors, payoffs, patronage and other corruptions out of the tax system. With the resulting savings, they lowered tax rates across the board. Those reductions, combined with the elimination of the enormous inefficiencies and perverse incentives that go into tax sheltering, helped propel a 20-year economic boom.
In overhauling any segment of our economy, the 1986 tax reform should be the model. Yet today's ruling Democrats propose to fix our extremely high-quality (but inefficient and therefore expensive) health-care system with 1,000 pages of additional curlicued complexity -- employer mandates, individual mandates, insurance company mandates, allocation formulas, political payoffs and myriad other conjured regulations and interventions -- with the promise that this massive concoction will lower costs.
This is all quite mad. It creates a Rube Goldberg system that simply multiplies the current inefficiencies and arbitrariness, thus producing staggering deficits with less choice and lower-quality care. That's why the administration can't sell Obamacare.

NEW YORK - Frank DiPascali, a longtime right-hand man to swindler Bernard Madoff, will plead guilty to criminal charges for his role in the disgraced financier's $65 billion fraud, according to a court document.
DiPascali worked for 33 years in the investment advisory arm of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC in New York, many of them as chief financial executive and deputy to Madoff, whose swindled large and small investors worldwide over at least 20 years.

It Takes A Group Of Lawyers
The United States Constitution and all 27 amendments, including an index page takes eighteen (18) pages. The Obamacare health proposal consumes one thousand and eighteen pages (1,018). A single amendment to the 'Cap and Tax" bill was three hundred (300) pages long.
We now know the members of congress vote on these laws without ever reading them. It is doubtful that very many of them have found the time to read the Constitution either. I expect the founding fathers must be spinning in their graves.

THE ONE WORD TO DESCRIBE OBAMACARE

As a physician who has authored books on preventative health care, I was given the opportunity to be the keynote speaker at a Congressional Dinner at The Capitol Building in Washington last Friday (7/17).
The presentation was entitled Health Care Reform, The Power & Profit of Prevention, and I was gratified that it was well received.

Let me summarize just a few salient points of the above plan. First, however, it should be clear that the same warning notice must be placed on The ObamaCare Plan as on a pack of cigarettes: Consuming this product will be hazardous to your health.
The underlying method of cutting costs throughout the plan is based on rationing and denying care. There is no focus on preventing health care need whatever. The plan's method is the most inhumane and unethical approach to cutting costs I can imagine as a physician.
The rationing of care is implemented through The National Health Care Board, according to the plan. This illustrious Board "will approve or reject treatment for patients based on the cost per treatment divided by the number of years the patient will benefit from the treatment."
Translation.....if you are over 65 or have been recently diagnosed as having an advanced form of cardiac disease or aggressive cancer.....dream on if you think you will get treated......pick out your coffin.
Oh, you say this could never happen? Sorry..... this is the same model they use in Britain.
The plan mandates that there will be little or no advanced treatments to be available in the future. It creates The Federal Coordinating Council For Comparative Effectiveness Research, the purpose of which is "to slow the development of new medications and technologies in order to reduce costs." Yes, this is to be the law.
The plan also outlines that doctors and hospitals will be overseen and reviewed by The National Coordinator For Health Information and Technology.
This " coordinator" will "monitor treatments being delivered to make sure doctors and hospitals are strictly following government guidelines that are deemed appropriate." It goes on to say....."Doctors and hospitals not adhering to guidelines will face penalties."
According to those in Congress, penalties could include large six figure financial fines and possible imprisonment.
So according to The ObamaCare Plan....if your doctor saves your life you might have to go to the prison to see your doctor for follow -up appointments. I believe this is the same model Stalin used in the former Soviet Union .
Section 102 has the Orwellian title, "Protecting the Choice to Keep Current Coverage." What this section really mandates is that it is illegal to keep your private insurance if your status changes - e.g., if you lose or change your job, retire from your job and become a senior, graduate from college and get your first job. Yes, illegal.
When Mr. Obama hosted a conference call with bloggers urging them to pressure Congress to pass his health plan as soon as possible, a blogger from Maine referenced an Investors Business Daily article that claimed Section 102 of the House health legislation would outlaw private insurance.
He asked: "Is this true? Will people be able to keep their insurance and will insurers be able to write new policies even though H.R. 3200 is passed?" Mr. Obama replied: "You know, I have to say that I am not familiar with the provision you are talking about."
Then there is Section 1233 of The ObamaCare Plan, devoted to "Advanced Care Planning." After each American turns 65 years of age they have to go to a mandated counseling program that is designed to end life sooner.
This session is to occur every 5 years unless the person has developed a chronic illness then it must be done every year. The topics in this session will include, "how to decline hydration, nutrition and how to initiate hospice care." It is no wonder The Obama Administration does not like my emphasis on Prevention. For Mr. Obama, prevention is the "enemy" as people would live longer.
I rest my case. The ObamaCare Plan is hazardous to the health of every American.
After I finished my Capitol Hill presentation, I was asked by a Congressman in the question-answer session: "I'll be doing a number of network interviews on the Obama Health Care Plan. If I am asked what is the one word to describe the plan what should I answer."
The answer is simple, honest, direct, analytical, sad but truthful. I told him that one word is FASCIST.
Then I added, "I hope you'll have the courage to use that word, Congressman. No other word is more appropriate."

PETA Unhappy Meals Targeting Kids

The animal rights organization lifted its moratorium on the McCruelty Campaign this year and since June has distributed Chicken McCruelty Unhappy Meals to McDonald's customers outside about a dozen restaurants around the country."
McDonald's markets its food to children by packaging it in brightly colored boxes with toys," Lindsay Rajt, a spokeswoman for PETA, tells Slashfood. "But most kids really love animals, and if they knew that McDonald's suppliers were breaking the wings and legs of gentle animals like chickens, I think that you'd have to drag kids into McDonald's kicking and screaming."
The campaign, though, has parents "hatin' it."

Former Jack Daniel's Master Distiller Dies At 69
NASHVILLE, Tennessee
Jimmy Bedford, the slender and silver-haired former master distiller of the Jack Daniel's whiskey during a 40-year career with the company, died Friday. He was 69.
His body was found outside a barn at his farm in Lynchburg, apparently the victim of a heart attack, company officials said.
Bedford retired in March 2008 after spending 20 years as the master distiller supervising the entire operation at the 143-year-old distillery in Lynchburg, the oldest registered one in the United States. Among his duties was tasting the whiskey before it was sent to retailers.

What Knocked Out Twitter? Attacks On Blogger
Hacker went after ‘Cyxymu’ on several sites, caused damage worldwide
NEW YORK - The outage that knocked Twitter offline for hours was traced to an attack on a lone blogger in the former Soviet republic of Georgia — but the collateral damage that left millions around the world tweetless showed just how much havoc an isolated cyberdispute can cause.
"It told us how quickly many people really took Twitter into their hearts," Robert Thompson, director of the Center for the Study of Popular Television at Syracuse University, said Friday.
Tens of millions of people have come to rely on social media to express their innermost thoughts and to keep up with world news and celebrity gossip.

TROOPERS INVESTIGATE CAROLINE CO. HOMICIDE
(Preston, Md) – Maryland State Police and allied law enforcement are searching for two men and a woman in connection with the murder of a migrant farm worker in Caroline County late last night during a robbery.
The victim has not been identified at this time. He is described as a Hispanic male, possibly in his 30’s. His body has been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy and identification.
Shortly before midnight yesterday, state troopers from the Easton Barracks were dispatched to assist Caroline County Sheriff’s Office deputies who were responding to a call about a robbery and shooting in the 6400-block of Bell Creek Road, Preston, Md. Arriving deputies found the victim had been apparently shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Caroline County Sheriff’s Office requested the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit conduct the investigation.
The preliminary investigation indicates that just before midnight yesterday, three suspects, who are described only as a white female and two African American males, entered the front door of a farmhouse that is used as a residence by ten migrant farm workers. The house is in a secluded area, about 300 yards from Bell Creek Road.
When the suspects entered the house, they demanded money. One of the male occupants of the house was struck in the face with the handgun being carried by one of the male suspects. A second resident of the house became involved in an altercation with the suspects and was shot and killed. The first man injured did not require hospitalization.
After the shooting, the three suspects, who escaped with an undetermined amount of money, ran down the dirt driveway to an unknown type of vehicle parked on Bell Creek Road. They fled the area in an unknown direction.
Technicians from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division responded and processed the scene for evidence. Caroline County State’s Attorney Jonathan Newell also came to the scene to meet with investigators. His office is continuing to provide investigative assistance.
Throughout last night and today, investigators have been following up leads and continuing interviews. The individuals who live in the home speak little English. Interpreters from the Easton Police Department, Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and the Maryland State Police have been assisting with the interviews.
Anyone with information about this murder, or who may have been traveling on Bell Creek Road between 11:00 p.m. yesterday and 1:00 a.m. this morning is urged to contact Maryland State Police at the Easton Barracks at 410-822-3101. Calls may be kept confidential.
The State Police Homicide Unit is being assisted in this investigation by the State Police Easton Barracks Criminal Investigation Section, and the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation is continuing.
A Report From Rock Hall
Thanks to the DOZENS of Republicans of Kent members who were able to attend the Kratovil event in Rock Hall this afternoon. I would estimate that there were over 200 people crowded into the steamy meeting room. The Congressman spoke for about 15 minutes, then took questions for about 20 minutes.
A number of times, he reminded the crowd that he spend 16 years as a prosecutor, so he pledged that he will prepare for the health care vote like he did for his trials by "reading every word of the health care legislation" before making up his mind and casting his vote. During the question period, he asked the crowd how many would support a public option. About one-third of the room raised their hand. The crowd then demanded that he ask how many opposed a public option. About two-thirds raised their hands, whistled, and stomped their feet. For a 16-year veteran prosecutor, he forgot one of the cardinal rules of the profession: never ask a question for which you don't already know the answer. I bet he wishes now that he had never asked that question!
I can't help but think he came away with the strong impression that his district's voters do not support the Obama/Pelosi/Reid efforts to pass a national health care plan. Time will tell whether he will vote in a manner that reflects his constituent's views or whether he will tow the Pelosi line as he did when voting in support of the Cap and Trade legislation.
I was also amazed at what appeared to be a crowd turnout generated by the “Organizing for America” group, the arm of the Obama/DNC machine. They had identical signs printed on home computers that had obviously been emailed in an organized effort to show support. My impression is that many of these folks weren’t even from Kent County. In fact, I snapped the enclosed pictures of one of their vehicles. I’ve never seen this contraption on Kent County roads. Have you?! Notice the sticker on the back for "Sutton for Sheriff". Not in Kent County. In fact, last election our Republican Sheriff, John Price, was unopposed!
In any event, I think those opposed to the government's health care plan made our voices heard. A number of us will drive over to Towson University on Monday afternoon for Ben Cardin's Town Hall meeting. If you are interested in car pooling, please reply to this email message.

Ann von Forthuber Challenges Chief Webster And The Salisbury Police Department
Yesterday, Ann von Forthuber – “the lady of the lake” who was brutally attacked in her own home – held a press conference in front of the Old Courthouse. Other than Salisbury News, there wasn’t any press.
The purpose of Ann’s press conference was to observe the one-year anniversary of the attack on her and to raise awareness of crime and its victims. She emphasized how she wasn’t alone and that many crimes were unsolved in the city with the assailants still at large.
It was impressive enough that Ann came forward publicly to answer questions about the attack on her. She talked about the long range effects such crime has on a person’s life in every aspect. Ann had complaints with the Salisbury Police Department’s handling of her case (90 days to get a sketch artist?), but most of her presentation was about rallying people to work together to get crime off our streets and out of our homes.
Even more impressive, here’s a lady who has been through a traumatic crime, yet she wants to help do a fundraiser for Crime Solvers. Absolutely incredible! Great idea, and Ann, we here at Salisbury News will be behind you because we know Crime Solvers works. A tip to them helped catch the killers of Anitra Pirkle quickly.

The Great Train Robber Gains His Freedom
Formerly a high-living fugitive, hospitalized Biggs is near death
LONDON - Ronnie Biggs, the last prisoner from Britain's "great train robbery" and once a high-living fugitive in Rio de Janeiro, gained his freedom on Friday but remained near death in his hospital bed.
Weakened by pneumonia, unable to speak and enfeebled by a series of strokes, Biggs laboriously tapped out on a spelling board that he was "very happy" that he had been given a compassionate release from custody.
"It was very emotional when the guards left," his son Michael said.

88-year-old sister of JFK surrounded by family, spokesman says
BOSTON - Eunice Kennedy Shriver was in critical condition at a Massachusetts hospital on Friday, a family spokesman said.
Spokesman Stephen Rivers said the 88-year-old sister of President John F. Kennedy was surrounded by her family at Cape Cod Hospital. He said her husband, children and all her grandchildren were at her side.

Piedmont Airlines Reduced Fleet In Salisbury
Piedmont Airlines is reducing it's fleet of Aircraft. This is the former Henson Airlines based in Salisbury. They've already returned 4 aircraft this spring and are planning to return an additional 7 this fall. This will constitute a 20% reduction in the fleet that was at 55 at the beginning of '09.
Of NICE And Men
Speaking to the American Medical Association last month, President Obama waxed enthusiastic about countries that "spend less" than the U.S. on health care. He's right that many countries do, but what he doesn't want to explain is how they ration care to do it.
Take the United Kingdom, which is often praised for spending as little as half as much per capita on health care as the U.S. Credit for this cost containment goes in large part to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, or NICE. Americans should understand how NICE works because under ObamaCare it will eventually be coming to a hospital near you.

The British officials who established NICE in the late 1990s pitched it as a body that would ensure that the government-run National Health System used "best practices" in medicine. As the Guardian reported in 1998: "Health ministers are setting up [NICE], designed to ensure that every treatment, operation, or medicine used is the proven best. It will root out under-performing doctors and useless treatments, spreading best practices everywhere."
What NICE has become in practice is a rationing board. As health costs have exploded in Britain as in most developed countries, NICE has become the heavy that reduces spending by limiting the treatments that 61 million citizens are allowed to receive through the NHS. For example:
In March, NICE ruled against the use of two drugs, Lapatinib and Sutent, that prolong the life of those with certain forms of breast and stomach cancer. This followed on a 2008 ruling against drugs -- including Sutent, which costs about $50,000 -- that would help terminally ill kidney-cancer patients. After last year's ruling, Peter Littlejohns, NICE's clinical and public health director, noted that "there is a limited pot of money," that the drugs were of "marginal benefit at quite often an extreme cost," and the money might be better spent elsewhere.

The Town Of Delmar Put Its Money Where Its Mouth Is
After heavy rain and extreme flooding last week, the Town of Delmar was out in full force cleaning out their storm water drains to make sure it doesn't happen again.
The forecast over the next several days is calling for lots of rain, (according to the local MSM Television News) so their timing couldn't be any better.

Tractor Trailer Drive Overtop Of BMW
Location: Route 141 at East Commons Boulevard in New Castle, Delaware, New Castle County
Date of Occurrence: Friday, August 07, 2009, at 10:21 a.m.
Resume: Troopers and emergency personnel responded today to Route 141 northbound and East Commons Boulevard for a two vehicle crash.
In this case, a 1995 BMW (operated by David Witwer, 39, of Elkton, Maryland) was in the right lane on East Commons Boulevard and prepared to make a right turn onto Route 141 northbound.
A 1996 Freightliner tractor trailer (operated by Gordon Richardson, 59, of Kearneysville, West Virginia) was positioned to the left of the BMW. The tractor trailer then executed a right turn from this center lane and started to head onto Route 141 northbound.
As the tractor trailer executed its turn, it drove right overtop of the BMW. The operator of the rig advised he did not see the car and that he was making a wide right turn from the center lane because of the length of his trailer.
Mr. Witwer was transported to Christiana Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Mr. Richardson was cited with Improper Turn. He was not injured.
The roadway was completely shut down for approximately an hour.

Tree Comes Down On Car Traveling On Marsh Road
Location: Marsh Road at Chestnut Drive in North Wilmington, Delaware, New Castle County
Date of Occurrence: Friday, August 07, 2009, at 10:43 a.m.
Resume: Shortly before 11:00 a.m. this morning, Ms. Theresa Hunt, 36, of Claymont, was traveling northbound on Marsh Road approaching Chestnut Drive.
Suddenly, and without warning, a limb from a large tree, which was on the east side of the roadway, broke loose and came down onto Ms. Hunt’s 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. The limb slammed against the hood of the SUV and into the passenger compartment.
Theresa’s 7-year-old daughter was sitting in the back, luckily directly behind her mother. She received several small scratches and bruises. Investigators at the scene advised that if she were sitting in the rear passenger side seat, the outcome of this crash could have been much worse.
The tree limb in currently sitting horizontally across the roadway and Marsh Road is closed. Traffic is getting by relatively easily by cutting through and adjacent neighborhood.
Clean up is expected to take approximately two to three hours.
The Health Insurers Have Already Won
How UnitedHealth and rival carriers, maneuvering behind the scenes in Washington, shaped health-care reform for their own benefit
As the health reform fight shifts this month from a vacationing Washington to congressional districts and local airwaves around the country, much more of the battle than most people realize is already over. The likely victors are insurance giants such as UnitedHealth Group (UNH), Aetna (AET), and WellPoint (WLP). The carriers have succeeded in redefining the terms of the reform debate to such a degree that no matter what specifics emerge in the voluminous bill Congress may send to President Obama this fall, the insurance industry will emerge more profitable. Health reform could come with a $1 trillion price tag over the next decade, and it may complicate matters for some large employers. But insurance CEOs ought to be smiling.
Executives from UnitedHealth certainly showed no signs of worry on the mid-July day that Senate Democrats proposed to help pay for reform with a new tax on the insurance industry. Instead, UnitedHealth parked a shiny 18-wheeler outfitted with high-tech medical gear near the Capitol and invited members of Congress aboard. Inside the mobile diagnostic center, which enables doctors to examine distant patients via satellite television, Representative Jim Matheson didn't disguise his wonderment. "Fascinating, fascinating," said the Democrat from Utah. "Amazing."

Elks Soccer Shoot
Elks Soccer Shoot taking place on Saturday August 8, 2009 behind the YMCA (next door to the Elks Pool). The event is a soccer shooting skills contest for boys and girls ages 5-13 with 1st, 2nd, 3rd place prizes in both genders and four age groups and certificates for all who participate. Registration is at 9 AM and the competition starts at 10 AM and is free of charge. Kids will get hot dogs and sodas as well as a chance to cool off in the pool afterwards.

Another $10.7 Billion For Fannie Mae (FNM)
For those who want to know how much worse that housing market is getting they need look no further that the quarterly results of Fannie Mae (FNM). The mortgage operation lost $15.2 billion and will need another $10.7 billion from the government to continue.
The primary reason for the loss is that 4% of the loans that Fannie Mae owns or controls were delinquent, up from 1.4% a year ago. Based on that data, the government’s bailout of Fannie Mae and its near-twin Freddie Mac (FRE) is not nearly over. Taxpayers have put $85 billion into the two companies, and that tab is about to go much higher.

Chaos Erupts At Town Hall Meeting
(Aug. 7) -- Emotions boiled over at a town hall meeting on health care reform in Tampa, Fla., Thursday.
Local news reports say a larger-than-expected crowd of more than 1,000 converged on the Hillsborough County Children's Board building. Shouting matches and scuffles broke out when organizers closed the doors of the packed auditorium. Police moved in as some protesters chanted and banged on windows.

Officials hoping to avoid confusion from hundreds of closures last spring
WASHINGTON - Swine flu is expected to return when kids go back to school, and the government is hoping its new advice on when to shut down schools during an outbreak will prevent the panic and confusion that led to hundreds of school closures last spring.
The government was to issue new guidance Friday for schools to follow when swine flu strikes. Unlike regular seasonal flu, this virus has not retreated during the hot and humid summer months and so far has infected more than 1 million Americans.
"We hope no schools have to close, but realistically, some schools will close this fall," Education Secretary Arne Duncan said this week during a forum with administration officials that was broadcast online.
