SU COVID-19 UPDATE: Classes canceled Thursday-Friday and important Spring Break announcement

Members of the SU Community,

While no positive cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) are currently known at SU or on the Eastern Shore, the University continues to make preparations to help prevent the spread of the virus to our area.

Effective immediately, we are implementing guidelines that will take effect in two steps. In the first step, starting today, we will limit meetings and large gatherings, encourage social distancing and remote learning, and prepare those who are able to telework.

In accordance with guidance from the University System of Maryland, classes are canceled this Thursday-Friday, March 12-13, so faculty may prepare for remote (online) instruction. When preparing to leave for Spring Break, students should take with them all essential belongings, including medications and other materials, in case it should become necessary to implement step two of the guidelines, which may include restricting access to campus for an extended time.

From March 23-April 3, instruction will be delivered online in courses for which this is possible. While we do not expect the campus to be closed during this period, we ask that students not return to campus until Saturday, April 4. Please check your campus email, the SU website and the University’s Facebook and Twitter pages for announcements regarding any updates.

These measures follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, USM and Maryland Department of Health on controlling the spread of the virus by decreasing the potential for human-to-human transmission.

SU also is discouraging its students, faculty and staff from all international and national travel at this time. The threat of COVID-19 will not last forever at its current level. Delaying travel now may prevent you from being infected or becoming a carrier and transmitting the virus to your loved ones, including elderly family members who may be at increased risk.

As the situation regarding COVID-19 continues to evolve in Maryland, throughout the U.S. and around the world, SU officials will hold a virtual town hall meeting 1:30-3 p.m. Friday, March 13, to answer questions and provide the most up-to-date information. A live streaming link will be available on the SU COVID-19 webpage, salisbury.edu/coronavirus, prior to the event.

Please monitor SU’s COVID-19 webpage for any further updates, including campus communications and event cancellations.

Every progressive institution is instilling nothing but panic in this country

WTH!! First, it was the racist Hoax where they canceled classes for the entire campus and now they are canceling class for this Corona Virus Hoax.

This new President needs to pack his $hit and take a job somewhere else. I didn't realize he was a Jake Day Homo that always needs a safe place to survive.

Buh Bye Dr. Wight!! Please get the Hell out of here because you are no longer welcome.

This is kind of ridiculous!

First classes are cancelled due to racist graffiti now students can leave early for spring break and not have to show for class when they return..... what a great time to be a college student. I cant wait for Corona themed parties.

Smart move. This will go along way in minimizing the spread of the virus on the Eastern Shore.

Most of the out of state students are from NJ and NY... current hotbeds for the virus. So, they will be marinating in it for the next few weeks and then bringing that mess back with them. This is what happens when you let children run things.

Anonymous said...

All of the above, except the smart one mentioning this as a smart move, are incapable of any scientific understanding and cannot even realize this move is to make ALL of you safe and not exposed to this virus that is HIGHLY contagious and can shut down all commerce and functioning in a community for weeks. This has nothing to do with the mortality rate, it has EVERYTHING to do with the contagious factor.

Alarmists will end up doing more harm than good re the bolognavirus

They should stay away longer... take off till Summer when you close S.U.

S.U. brings 10,000 or more cars to Salisbury to clog up our streets...

Some of these kiddies terrorize local neighborhoods with parties, vandalism and trash by tossing their couches, chairs and beer cans all over yards...

Besides, Salisbury Mayor Jake Day will than have to hang out with folks his own age.

4:34 That is why they are not allowed back until 4/4 AND because of what you said, they could be told to stay away longer.

You all are unbelievable. First, you don't want anyone here. Now you want them all to be here.

Anonymous said...

4:34 No, most of them are not from NY/NJ. Most are from MD. The ignorance in this thread is off the chart.

Anonymous said...

Right! Why take chances. Some of the professors travel or are exposed to colleagues that travel. Students exposed, families exposed, coworkers exposed...

Anonymous said...

Apparently it only takes 1 bad apple to infect the bunch. Why even risk it

Anonymous said...

If none of this directly involves you, why do you continue to bitch and moan about it? In all reality who gives a crap whether classes are closed for two days. Whoopee! Good for the students. Two days will not be a major impact on them. If you were getting off work for 2 days you wouldn’t be crying like a beaten baby seal. Geez.....

Gutless cowards

Will there be tuition refunds?

Anonymous said...

Exactly, given the percentage of students that are from out-of-state in more contaminated/affected areas.

Anonymous said...

You just explained why they're not bringing them back to in class instruction.

Anonymous said...

There is no need for tuition remission as all of the classes will continue after spring break. They will just occur online. Coincidentally, SU signed a contract allowing all faculty and staff to have access to Zoom, an amazing platform for online meetings/classes.

Don't fret, the liberal brainwashing will not be compromised.

I wonder if Corona beer will sell out locally for Corona themed parties

Spring Break = Time to DRINK CORONAS !!!!

Did it ever occur to you that these clowns will be given a free pass this semester and some of us will have to employ them with their fake degrees? So yes, it does involve me directly. If you had a job you would probably understand what I am talking about.

Ahh... I get it. You stayed home today so not to risk it, right?? Or are you one of the unemployed clowns on the internet armchair quarterbacking it??

Were you creeps acting like this during the Ebola scare in 2014 when that was a serious threat?? No, I didn't think so because Obama was occupying the White House and he wasn't up for re-election.

Anonymous said...

If they're still having classes, albeit online, why would they issue a refund for tuition? Now if they tell students that they cannot come back to their dorms and they paid for room and board, then they should get a refund for the portion of the semester they did not stay.

Dr. Wight....YOU ARE A COWARD.

Anonymous said...

Baltimore and DC schools are going to cancel classes for their senior students and do like before and just hand them diploma's even if they haven't finished.

They got the DNC/Chicom memo.
Scare everyone with propaganda about The Communist flu, a Bio-weapon.

6:37 call me what you want, at least I have a sane and science-believing mind. Also, my educated mind has nothing to do with politics, just a willingness to learn.

Dr. Wight is actually doing you and everyone on the Eastern Shore a huge solid by not having SU students bring Covid-19 to the Shore. You should be thanking him.

Executive Summary: As long as you log on once you'll drag an 'A' in each of your classes this semester.

Businesses most frequented by students to be most impacted.

Anonymous said...

Actually it was meant for those living on campus and paying for the meal plan.

Anonymous said...

Dr. Wight should be thanked for his preemptive efforts to minimize the spread of Covid-19 on the Eastern Shore. This virus’ greatest concern is how effective it is with transferring to other people - 4-5 x’s greater than SARS, Ebola, the flu - and crippling local economies. Mortality rates are not a concern.

Anonymous said...

Stooges of lies and deception. What do you expect from the libtards running the place.

Anonymous said...

Actually I was addressing those living on campus and having to pay for the meal plan.

Anonymous said...

Actually asking for students that live on campus and pay for the meal plans?

Anonymous said...

But right now all of the apples are here without the virus. So why do they have to leave two days earlier than they were going to? I guess we shouldn’t expect it to make sense. They have their own brand of intelligence over there.

Anonymous said...

It’s not two days. It’s two days now and two weeks later. The reason it matters is the nanny-state mentality that is being perpetuated there. Do you realize the adults (students) there who can’t take care of themselves are the same people who are supposed to take care of our country someday?

Anonymous said...

Yeah or instead of catching it in class they are catching it tonight at Brew River. You can hear the hooting and hollering clear over by the library tonight.
I also hear that nursing students have been told if they go out of town they can't come back for lessons at the hospital for 2 weeks. So what about if their significant other goes out of town? What about if they have family visit from out of town.
What is the point?! I am so sick of morons writing rules that achieve NOTHING!!!

Anonymous said...

So they will catch it somewhere outside of the classroom. So what if a month from now their are more cases? You can board yourself up if you want but if you are going to catch it you are going to catch it. The reaction to this mild flu is so much worse than the flu itself. When I see things like this I feel like it is just to sow panic, try to wreak havoc on the economy and then blame Trump for it.

Anonymous said...

Hahahahahahaha. Great comment.

Anonymous said...

9;03pm everything you said is a pack of lies. The transmission and lethality are far less severe than the seasonal flu. Dr. Wights reaction to the graffiti and Corona virus are the acts of a spineless coward.

Anonymous said...

Ahhhh!! The sky is falling!!!! I want to see a comparison of flu cases and flue related deaths by state vs. Corona virus. Maybe people will see they are more likely to die from a bee sting than Corona.

Anonymous said...

It was reported that lots of sexual activity boosts the immune system so the students living on campus need to get busy to prevent an outbreak.

Still covering up the SU race baiter

Went to Walmart, Target, Publix (local chain grocery store Florida)and CVS this am. You can't believe the number of school kids in each establishment with parents. Also teens on Spring break. So what was the point of closing schools? These kids are in public instead of a controlled classroom. Panic
