Wicomico Mulling Fire Commission

SALISBURY – The Wicomico County Council this week approved the formation of a workgroup that will look into a countywide fire service commission.

In an open work session Tuesday, Wayne Strausburg, director of administration, approached the council about forming a commission that would handle matters relating to certain county services.

“I think the question at hand is whether or not the executive and council believe that an appointed body should be created to advise them on pertinent matters relating to fire and EMS services in the county,” he said.

Strausburg explained that the proposed commission would handle matters related to budgets, funding, territories, employment, financial statements, performance metrics and the like. Commission members would act as an advisory board of sorts, consulting elected officials on such subjects as it pertains to fire and EMS services.

Long overdue. Only an idiot would resist something such as important as the Fire Commission.

Joe I am listening to my police scanner and Wicomico Central 911 dispatches Paramedic 2, the station 2 duty crew tones for a "non breathing subject at Genesis, Salisbury Nursing Home."

Paramedic 2 responds and then Central dispatches Station 16 for a fire engine to respond to assist Paramedic 2 for the non breathing subject at Genesis. Then Truck 2 responds on the call.

About a minute later Engine 16 responds from Station 16 on Cypress Street because they have ALS on board. (ALS is Advance Life Support and probably a paramedic).

So now you have Paramedic 2, Truck 2, Assistant Chief 2 and Engine 16 responding to a "non breathing subject" that more than likely went to Salisbury Nursing Home to die. Four capital pieces and 10-12 paid fireman responding to a call where they are not needed. Have they forgotten that Salisbury Nursing Home has Nurses, RN's, LPN's, Doctors, Physician Assistants, etc. employed at that facility. Why do they need all those paid firemen trampling through a nursing facility in dirty contaminated fire gear just to stand around. Why do they need four fire trucks and ambulances parked in front of the front door blowing their diesel fumes in the building and through the AC units. Why do those poor nursing home residents and their families sitting at the front do enjoying this beautiful weather need to breath those toxic fumes. Why do those poor residents need to be scared to death with all those fire trucks and ambulances screeching up to that front do with lights, sirens and air horns blowing. Do you know how bad that scares our elderly family members and citizens.

Now I just heard all the fire trucks cleared the call. All that for what?? This is why Bob Culver should not have signed that Fire Service Agreement with Jake Day. This is why we need a fire commission. That nursing home is in the County and it falls under the jurisdiction of Wicomico County and not the City of Salisbury.

Bob Culver reach down their to see if you still have them and do something about this wasted resources.

I saw that meeting and Joe Holloway kept saying "Isn't that what the Fire Chief's Association is?"

You can bet that Larry Dodd and the Salisbury Fire Department is behind this in the background. They found out that they couldn't control the Chiefs Association and the Wicomico County Fireman's Association so they will do it this way. It's a shame Salisbury can't float down the Wicomico river into the bay. So 10:57 I guess I'm an idiot, but at least not a blind one.

12:33 since it is in the County they sent all this so they could collect more money from the County. You can have 10 Fire Commissions and it won't correct this fiasco.

Go back to station 13 reject. Your ramblings don't even make sense. And it's obvious you're a tick by the statement about us trampling through in fire gear. Only the volunteers feel the need for turnout pants on a medical assist. And for the record we don't get to take all of those health care providers with us. And working a cardiac arrest takes a lot of resource. Go take an ACLS, get an education, or maybe go play outside and stop living by your scanner.

If you watched the meeting you Dummy you would have seen that Wayne Strausburg presented this at the request of County Executive Bob Culver. Councilman Dodd or the Salisbury Fire Department has nothing to do with it.

In regards to your last statement, it sounds like you are a blind idiot.

To transport a dead old man to the hospital does not require a lot of resources.

"working a cardiac arrest takes a lot of resource."

What is a lot of "resource?" TICK means Totally Incapable of Containing Knowledge. Now please tell us again who the TICK is?

1:00 PM said "They found out that they couldn't control the Chiefs Association and the Wicomico County Fireman's Association"

Can you please elaborate on what this "control" is all about and what it means?

This response is for 1pm. What are you afraid of?

Joe this statement right here is more evidence that the paid firemen are hateful people and evidence of how they helped run off the volunteer firemen.

Seems the problem is Salisbury Fire Department always wanting, paid and volunteers. Central is a joke and yes paid men do wear turnout pants on medicals.

To the people that didn't take the time to read the article.

This appears to be a grand idea. I can't understand why someone would be opposed to it. Great Job Wayne and Bob! Thank you County Council for agreeing to form an exploratory committee.

There are a lot of fire companies that don't turn in an audit as required every year. Some of the volunteer companies are getting way to much money from the tax payers.

I am confused by all the info in the last 6 months on volunteer firemen, wasn't it ended? There will not be a volunteer firestation in Salisbury at the airport or anywhere else that the subject is closed not enough money and not really needed in or around the city, isn't the decision final or not?

Seen a couple of fire trucks from West Chester at the new fire house.

There it is 3:55 now we get down to it, the volunteer fire companies are getting money that Salisbury wants.

Yes the paid firemen where their turnout gear on more medical calls than not.

The funny ones are the ones that walk around with their fire helmet on and no gear. You talk about looking STUPID!

So much money is being thrown at the fire companies and no one can explain why. Why is the county dumping millions of dollars in the volunteer fire companies when they are volunteers?? If they are volunteers then they shouldn't they be volunteering to raise their own money. Isn't that what volunteer means?

Why is the county dumping money into a paid fire department in Salisbury? Why do we need a paid fire company when we have so many volunteer companies that are doing the same job?

Records and the other chiefs need to stop casing the area and do there job .
