Vote Being Held This Sunday In Puerto Rico To Determine Whether They Want To Become 51st State

On Sunday, Puerto Ricans are going to the polls to decide again on the issue of statehood.

Officially a territory, the island doesn’t have any voting representation in Congress. But if a statehood referendum passes, it could dramatically alter the balance of power in Washington.

A heavily leftist territory, making Puerto Rico a state could mean two Democratic Senators and five Democratic House members added to Congress. Puerto Rico is home to 3.5 million Americans.

The statehood issue comes up relatively frequently, with voters choosing to retain their special “territory” status every time.

But this time might be different. If it is approved, it would relieve the island from their fiscal crisis. States can manage money much differently than territories and they would be able to navigate their overwhelming debt.

"it would relieve the island from their fiscal crisis. States can manage money much differently than territories and they would be able to navigate their overwhelming debt."...................thus sharing their debt with the existing 50 states.

It would also shift the power in the legislature - in the wrong direction!

maybe we should get to vote on if we want them or not.

If it wasn't okay back then, why not today? Last I heard their debt was like $78 billion and the gov't was having difficult. Plus, with almost 4 million USA'ers there, again why not?

What would be the advantages is more/less where I'm going here, not the negativity of debt, CONgress, they smell, hate us, etc...

Why would we want PR as the 51st rather than DC? Hmmmm.....

Maybe Hillary and Bill could be the senators from Puerto Rico.

Let them join so we have a place to send all the snowflakes, muslims, and unemployed former Target executives.

Back during Reagan's presidency, the first McDonalds to ever close because they were losing money was located at PR. They had/have so many liberal employee mandates to employers it was killing them. Everything from paid time off for birthdays to mandatory Christmas presents to employees. It went on and on. PR is a disaster that taxpayers won't want to support as a State.

Hope they know what they are doing.
Who would CHOOSE to become a US State?

What a loser country this has become.

Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory using US currency. No passports needed to visit there. Beautiful island. But government has ruined it and many of their citizens are coming here to work. Good hard-working people. We were headed in the same direction before Trump. So beware if you think of voting for another liberal politician.
