Obama Discusses His Overtime Rule In Weekly Address, Shows He Doesn’t Understand Economy

We’ve already seen the news that Team Obama plans on changing OT rules for salaried private sector employees, utterly failing to understand that things do not stay the same in response to government regulations. Today, O speaks on this

(White House) Things like the 40-hour workweek and overtime are two of the most basic pillars of a middle class life. But for all the changes we’ve seen in our economy, our overtime rules have only been updated once since the 1970s. Just once. In fact, forty years ago, more than 60 percent of workers were eligible for overtime based on their salaries. But today, that number is down to seven percent. Only seven percent of full-time salaried workers are eligible for overtime based on their income. (he mixed in two different metrics)

That’s why this week, my Administration took a step to help more workers get the overtime pay they’ve earned. The Department of Labor finalized a rule to extend overtime protections to 4.2 million more Americans. It’s a move that will boost wages for working Americans by $12 billion over the next 10 years. We’re more than doubling the overtime salary threshold. And what that means is, most salaried workers who earn less than about $47,500 a year will qualify for overtime. Or, their employers can choose to give them a raise so that they earn more than $47,500. Or, if employers don’t want to raise wages, they can let them go home after 40 hours and see their families or train for new jobs. Any way you slice it, it’s a win for working families. And we’re making sure that every three years, there will be an automatic update to this threshold – so that working families won’t fall through the cracks for decades at a time ever again.

This is the single biggest step I can take through executive action to raise wages for the American people. It means that millions of hardworking Americans like Elizabeth will either get paid for working more than 40 hours, or they’ll get more time with their families. Either way, they win. The middle class wins. And America wins.

Except, things won’t work out the way this guy, who has never had to actually run a business, thinks, as Andy Puzder, CEO of CKE Restaurants and a member of the Job Creators Network, tells us

Its a joke for the restaurant community to comment. They have been abusing the system for years. I guess for them the ride is over and it's time to treat your people more respectfully. Crap pay for long hours, its a joke. There is absolutely no reason for anyone in retail to HAVE to work 45-50 hours a week. It has always come down to employer greed and disrespect. They won't do it and they own the business but they expect you to. I have no sympathy for the greedy whining employers.

What a stupid ignoramus! Nothing here helps anyone who needs it.

Hours have been forced to under 30 hours by Obamacare requiring workers to get 2 jobs and still no insurance benefits, so workers need to go on the "plan" and get subsidized insurance.

So, what is "overtime"? Usually anything over 40, but now is it over 30???

I'd bet not, and the toilet continues to swirl toward the sewer.

Barack, you have no clue. Quit your job ASAP, please.

7:32 Choose to work only 40 hours a week and you will never advance to a position of leadership. The reality is there are many people with far more ambition that will put in the effort to ultimately better themselves and their families,

Willing to give it a "tough 40"...Someone else will always be signing your paycheck...

The truth is businesses will build more bench strength behind the manager (which is good thing). The disgruntled manager (7:32) will work less which is a good thing. Cream will still rise to the top (which is a good thing). Not much else will change ...

Since when do salaried employees get overtime??? I thought only hourly employees got overtime. What difference does it make, overtime pay ended when Obamacare started.

9:45 are you Bernie Sanders? No one gets to the top thru hard work? Really?

9:45 is still living in the stone ages. Pay people to perform a service not for wasted hours. Anyone claiming to work over 40 is lying, they work 30 and waste 20.

Employers are stupid and hanging on to the old mantra of sucking as much time out of their employees lives instead of actually looking at what they are doing.

Most people are able to complete their jobs in less than 40 but won't tell you because of your outdated mentality. So we sit around and waste at least 5-10 hours a week.

Greed and stupidity, and now the tables are turning.

10:10 So so so true.
Its all about who you know and who you butt kiss.
I have seen complete morons climb over people just because they kissed butt and back stabbed. The better a snitch you were the farther you went, whether the intel was true or not.
I have worked for some unbelievably ignorant people and most of them had degrees.
