More Businesses Closing Their Doors At The Mall In Salisbury

This is Deb's Dress Shop in the Centre of Salisbury Mall going out of business. Wet Seal is already gone out if business. Radio Shack in the Mall is almost liquidated and should be closed by the first week of February, leaving only the Radio Shack on College Avenue. That is 3 popular stores since J. C. Penny's went out of business. I heard McDonald's also closed their doors there. 

The Mall was recently been bought out by new owners. Is history repeating itself?

Malls are a dying trend. The city was stupid for allowing developers to build a mall so late. Look at all that wasted space now.

Unfortunately this is a trend that most U.S cities are going to see. Retail brick and mortar stores are going to see large shortfalls considering that many Americans have begun to tighten their belts. The presence of online retail with minimal overhead costs has swung it's hammer and begun to show us that a local business for larger retailers is not cost effective in small markets. Throw those facts on top of the crime in Salisbury the horrific economic situation and the impending doom of our local mall is certainly appearing to repeat itself. Soon the floors will go un-mended ceiling begin to leak from it's glass panes and the Centre at Salisbury will soon look like the "Old Mall" used to before it became nothing more than rubble next to the Civic Center. The best move that the Centre has is if they rethink how much they are charging for rent to many of the establishments so they will not vacate at the rate that they currently are. And the idea that they are banning guns is totally ludicrous considering one of the larger retailers still present is Dicks whom sells firearms. Tell me that makes sense.

Yes history will repeat itself... because they want to build a new mall thinking,"hey because the mall is new, people will come buy crap"

When in reality, no one has any money to spend on needless crap, like they want you to... This coupled with obama bin laden care, will surely take all of your money...

Oh and to the people who called me a fool or clueless and a conspiracy theorist, Here is to you:

History is indeed repeating itself IF the rent rates increased when the new owners took over.Why are there so few among us who realize the importance of OWNING a building and the lot it is on? That isn't rocket science.Large corporations like Penny's and Sears fall prey to huge rent/lease fees nationwide.Mall associations are a merciless bunch.A new trend could begin in our local mall.Cut 25% off of the rent with a guarantee that it would remain at that amount for 5 full years.

Many many factors are effecting the closure of businesses in our Mall........the latest example of the unrest on Saturday evening is probably the last straw needed to break it's back. I witnessed one of the biggest Malls on the seat coast....Landover Mall transform thru the same evolution and that too closed forever. Racial tensions became so energized that the paying public feared for their safety and stopped going....end of story! This is just another sad step towards what is to come!

1046-Large "anchor" retailers generally sign 100yr leases, and those lease rates remain in effect when the mall is sold.

In Yahoo finance they had a article that 60 malls nationally might close.

Sears is supposed to be closing before this fall. The parent corp, K-Mart, is shutting down many stores. Gander Mnt. is also going to shut its doors due to Maryland's gun laws.

I love how people still call this a new mall. It's been open for 25 years now. I can't believe how time flies. 10:25 comments that the city was stupid for not seeing malls were a dying trend. I'm not sure that anyone saw them as a dying trend 25 or even 30 years ago when planning for the Centre began.

Other than the anchor stores, which I enter from the parking lot, there are only clothing and shoe stores (along with junky kiosks). There's nothing in there for me.
Also, how pleasant is walking thru the mall surrounded by misbehaving juveniles with pants down to their knees

No they don't sign 100 years leases, 10 years yes. JCP was due to renew and decided to run, Sears is due to renew this year as well. Boscov's will be next. Macy just renewed a couple years ago. Why would Cracker Barrel want to move in this dying hole.

Malls do well in locations with better higher paying jobs. Delmarva is not one of those areas.

The new corporation announced that it would continue to operate stores under both the Sears and Kmart brands. The merger of Kmart and Sears closed on March 24, 2005, following affirmative shareholder votes of both companies. Sears Holdings now operates Sears and Kmart stores.

Sad,I do not think this mall ever had feel the old civic ave mall had.I remember its last dying days when only the warehouse food depot,peebles and a handful of others remained open.Those were good days in salisbury when there was plenty of good jobs for middle class people so sad its all gone.

This mall has been open since around 1990 therefor making it an old mall. If you look at Boscov's and Sears they have not remodeled in 25 years. Boscov's still has those big boat anchor cash registers and the Batman style phones. When a mall doesn't remodel it is old and waiting for someone to open a new mall. All someone has to do is open a new Mall in Delmar and the Center of Salisbury will be just like the old Salisbury Mall and the Blue Hen Mall in Dover. It will be toast.

I would say that after Saturday nights Thugfest and it happening again on Sunday, That Mall is circling the drain.

I remember walking around the old mall in Salisbury doing Christmas shopping and the mall was bustling with people. Everyone had money in their pockets and everyone was excited. I could just walk around the mall to feel the joy and excitement of good people and didn't have to spend a nickel. It was just a great place to be.

Then ECI came to town and we had the college student murdered in the mall. There was also a police shooting in that mall. It went down hill from there. Since ECI and Barrie and Jim this city may never recover.

Malls may be a dying trend but whats not a dying trend is land lords that continously raise rents.As soon they see someone starting to make money they jack up the rent.Anyone who owns a small business had best own the property or they won't be around long.I have owned 2 small businesses and owned the property for both I never could have made it any other way.

1:38, what the hell are you talking about? They DO run rampant here. The ones boxed at ECI are from across the bay for the most part.

How about that Fruitland perv who tried to abduct an 11 yo boy near Asbury Church just over a year ago?

At least the murders have gone down.

I believe the exodus will continue when lease renewals come up. Consider that Penny's is still operating in Easton...yet an area much larger cannot keep one open? We are losing market share and people with truly disposable income. The crime and other issues related to it are making folks stay home and shop on line. I will say this...if a Target opens in north Worcester County, you will not see many more folks not making the trip into Salisbury. We use to have to go there for everything...no the case anymore...and I remember well the bustling "old" mall and the feel of Salisbury under the direction of Mayor Martin and the Police Department under Chief Dykes...it is like night and day when put up alongside today's situation and leadership. Back then, Salisbury really was the commercial "Cross Roads" of Delmarva...she is fast becoming a place you bypass on your way to a better, safer place.

The mall has been empty since the recession began. Without foot traffic, the stores can't stay open. There's more stuff available online for less, and big box stores are a lot cheaper, too. So there's no reason to go there.

The only reason I park at the mall now is for the movies. I'm not sure if that counts as going to the mall or not!

A consistent reason given by many fleeing retailers is that the rent at the Centre is too high that combined with diminished sales . I can't say whether it is or isn't as I'm not a retailer renting space there but it may explain the general high prices on merchandise at quite a few places. I can say that this mall is a bit of a nightmare for the average shopper . Walking this long corridor design of a mall is murder on the knees. Not just because of its layout but it seems that the they've packed so many overwide kiosks in there that it leaves very little maneuverable walking space for the shoppers. Scatter in this same space those people who like to walk 5 to 6 wide and those who feel the need to stop and gather for a chat with others in the same space and getting from one place to another becomes a beast. And where in the world has all the security gone?? With the exception of the holiday shopping season (and I didn't spot much security then either) they seem to have all but disappeared. The people who will actually spend money to support these retailers are not going to deal with having to put this much energy into the acquisition of merchandise. The everfading lighting in the parking lots, almost extinct security, obnoxious loiterers who use the mall as a "hang out" with no intention of shopping, high prices and the seemingly increasing crime incidents at the Centre will surely continue to drive those of us who actually spend money there away.
