Most Expensive Sprinkler System

A Salisbury News Viewer just called to inform me that Salisbury Fire Station 1 is out on Rt. 50 and Tilghman Road, (get this) watering the grass and plants in the median strip near K-Mart. Your tax dollars hard at work.

May possibly be cooling of mulch so it won't catch fire.person probly has no idea what mulch does in weather conditions like this.wanna gripe about sfd.....gripe about the fire boat.not something that is most likely being done to avoid an accident and to protect the public.people need to find out or ask a question or two before the condemn someone or something.and as far as tax dollars.....the ones there were most likely volunteers....so no man hours.I think two gallons of fuel is worth not having someone killed in an accident if the mulch was burning and smoking up rt.50.now wouldnt it be irresponsible of the city if they didn't do prevention and allowed it to happen?

No they are at J C Penney's at the Centre. Just saw them not 15 min. ago

You gotta be kidding me.I hope the mayor will end the usless waste by salisburys fire dept.boats.riding the strip waiting for a call.disgusting.

I seen that the other day over by ACE hardware. I couldn't believe it but I seen them hooked up to the hydrants so I assumed they were draining the system?

I sure hope they were not there to water the grass.

We're under code red fire conditions you nincompoop.

Anonymous said...

Maybe they are keeping he grass wet so it wont catch on fire?

Anonymous said...

More waste has been going on than when Jeff Simpson was the chief. It's actually worse than when Gordo was in the mix.

Keeping grass and mulch wet so it doesn't catch fire?! Is it just me or is that the most asinine thing ever heard for awhile?

I think it would take more than a couple gallons of gas(diesel) to run around watering grass and mulch.

You boys must have been sitting around burning some grass yourselves to come up with this idea.

First time I've heard of any fire company doing this crap. lol. Accident caused by smoke from burning mulch......lmao

Mmm , does this really surprise anyone , farmen are a step beyond the entitled . They will tell you , sleep for 36 hours , then rest four 72 hours at home.
I guess they have to practice with the hoses on something , this time it was grass.
The should join the teachers union.
Laaaaaaaazzzzzeee.
Don't give that crap about saving buildings or people. Most builings burn down.99% of the people get out on their own and insurance takes care of the rest.
It's a fact that the farmen cause more damage than the fire.

What a crock. You are all absolutely right. (NOT) First they should drain the tanks on the engine into the drain at the station, since 1. they need to be drained regularly, and 2. there is a drought/fire warning in effect right now. You're right, why 1. achieve some training, and familiarity with their equipment, while 2. performing required maintenance on their equipment, and 3. possibly avoiding a fire. Gosh what were they thinking wasting our tax dollars by actually performing useful functions when they could of been sitting at the firehouse sucking up tax payer dollars watching tv. You people like to complain about everything. You want a real insult? Try sitting here thousands of miles away, paying the same taxes you do, reaping no benefit whatsoever from it, and having to listen to you complain about every single action the fire department takes. You dont like it? Run for Mayor and do something about it.

YAWN!!!

Let me guess. You are one of those FARMIN who have an excuse for all their wrong doings. It's called damage control.

Second Guess. You don't pay Salisbury City taxes. I bet I am accurate on the second guess!

In the past couple of days Ocean City has had quite a few mulch and small brush fires. I imagine caused by cigarettes people toss out of car windows. Please don't do that with this dry weather we have been having.

NEWSFLASH: If you think this is a waste wait till you hear about Acting Chief Hoppes, I mean CHIEF Hoppes, taking second all expense paid vacation, oops training trip, to Indianapolis. That's right for the second time in 3 weeks Hoppes is gone another week while enjoying some hard earned time off from the office. An entire week in the beautiful city of Indianapolis for the Fire Department Instructors Conference. Instructors conference? I thought he was The Fire Chief? Oh well, it doesn't matter, it's not his money. Flight, hotel room, meals, conference, per diem, a week off, etc.

How will this conference benefit him and the Salisbury tax payers when he is not a fire department instructor? Isn't the city struggling with balancing a budget? hasn't their been furlough's for employees the last 2 years to help balance a budget?

And this is the person you want to be the steward of your hard earned tax dollars?

Oh, BTW there are several others from the FD flying out to the conference as we speak. I wonder what that bill will be?

"Deputy Chief 2 to Central. Will you dispatch a medic unit to the Civic Center for a wrestler with a neck injury. Was unconscious first now conscious."

Ok, here is the scenario. Volunteer Deputy Chief Lee Smith working a part time gig at the Wicomico County Youth and Civic Center. Is he representing the Salisbury Fire Department or Wicomico County? If he is getting paid for a security gig at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center he is security for them, not Deputy Chief 2 for the Salisbury Fire Department. If he is representing the Salisbury Fire Department and he is an EMT he should be providing patient care.

Now he says "Paramedic 1 we are going to need board, collar and stretcher."
Hey dumb dumb, I think the Paramedics know what they are going to need! So if he is telling them what "we" are going to need then he is representing the Salisbury Fire Department and the Civic Center which is a major conflict of interest and should not be acceptable. This shows poor leadership on behalf of the Salisbury Fire Department and the elected leaders of the City for allowing them free rein.

Deputy Chief 2 should not even be carrying a portable radio with him when he is working somewhere.

Deputy Chief 2 is not qualified to be a firefighter. He has never been a firefighter and just kissed the right butt to get where he is.

What?! Paid firemen still need training on how to point a hose? Sorry dude, this isn't the military where everything is duplicated and work is made to keep troops busy.

But you know, this is the shur. They will probably put this action down on their resumes. I led a team to water grass.

Preventive maintenance is one thing but this is nuts.

Fire fighters are fire fighters just as cops are cops.anywhere they go.the carry radios.like cops carry guns.serious fire fighters carry their gear whereever they go.matter of fact any fire fighter in this county is a county employee. Even the volunteers.and last time I checked.the civic center is owned by the county.
Now for the point to make you looks even more dumb.a deputy chief isn't qualified to be a firefighter? How do possibly come to that cunclussion? A person for a through fire 1 fire 2 vehicle rescue.hazmat machinery rescue.just to become an officer I.e. Lt.or capt. To get higher up the classes turn to fire officer 1 then 2. Then 3. No one in their right minds would appoint a man a position such as this with no experience.and no fire fighter would ever listen to a man barking orders unless he's been there and knows whats going on.fires and any type if a scene is dynamic and ever changing.no two are the same.it takes a seasoned well trained person to lead men and women in any and all life saving operations.

I can't believe that as much as Joe posts only good sensible comments....he has allowed comments that people obviously have no idea what they're talking about.like accidents don't happen from pour visability from smoke or a fire chief is not qualified to even be a firefighter.is really like to know how Joe albero stands on some of these comments.

"116 to Central. 116 to Central. 116 to Central. Can you dispatch an ambulance to the Civic Center for an 18 year old male?"

Another Clown from the Salisbury Fire Department getting paid at the Civic Center and representing the Salisbury Fire Department. WTH gives them portable radios? These guys are embarrassing.

Anonymous said...

Yes sir they still need to train.things change.materials change.and things react in ways they didn't in the past while burning.using different patterns on differnet types of fires can change the whole scene in an instant.fifteenth years ago it was all one way....balls to the wall.
Not to mention that salisbury has a mix of volunteers and career staff.these men have to train together because the don't work with the same guys over and over as a 100% paid department does.these guys have to be on the same page as each other.know the others thoughts/ needs without even speaking.hard to do with a volunteer that only comes the the least he has to.training is essential in what they do.

Anonymous said...

Hey sarge.didn't you wanna train and train and train again with the new guy in your platoon to make sure he had it right? Or just keep training to keep sharp? What do you think these guys do? One things for sure.your a marine.guess the army was slightly out your i.q. range.

WTH are you talking about? This has got to be the most uneducated post I have ever seen in my life.

So, you guys are complaining that a member of the SFD, working as medical staff at a youth wrestling event at the Civic Center, called for an ambulance when faced with a possible severe neck injury?

Seems to me he chose to communicate with the ambulance dispatcher the fastest way possible -with a SFD radio. I bet the parents of the young man laying on the mat, not knowing if he was paralyzed, were pretty happy the paramedics got there so fast.

There are plenty of officers both career and volunteer in Salisbury and Wicomico county that are not even close to being firemen. They've never been in a burning building or put any kind of fire out but they have sat in the classroom and passed written tests. At least the city has officer standards while to be a "chief" in the county all you need to do is buy a few 12 packs of Bush at election time and you can be in charge.

Easy brother.those volleys you speak of have all passed their classes.everyone has completed the same training that salisbury has.they even train together at times.and most volleys are even trained by salisbury career staff at mfri.not ti mention that Maryland fire rescue institute is ran by the university of Maryland.wich is the second most reckonized fire school in the world.after phoenix az. Volley houses drill and train in houses.they are lit over n over.used as much as they can safely.plus additional time at mfri if the co.arranges to do so.so even if they haven't the expierence if the city guys the have comoleted the same required classes plus.except probate members who are new.

You know so much about chiefs and how they been appointed.enlighten us.name one chief that hasn't seen fire.name one chief who hasn't had atleast ten years or better in a company.you can't.matter of fact the county volunteers are more stricter than salisbury as to who gets to do what and drive what.

Anonymous said...

That's ok bud.I understand it.its a reply to the comment about how a sfd officer is working at the civic center while getting paid but representing as a fire officer.it would help if you read all the posts before you work your brain to death.

It means a cop is a cop where ever he goes.same as a fire fighter.it may not be said the best but the comprehension is there.it makes sense to me.the uneducated one is you.didn't they teach you reading comprehension? Oh I see.I apologize.....you can only put together children's puzzles.

To Fruitland Genetic Disorder we are talking about the City of Salisbury and not Fruitland. MYOB.

First and foremost if the parents had any concern about their boy laying on the mat "paralyzed" it might be in their best interest to find another past time for him.

Second the City of Salisbury tax payers pay over $2,500 each of those radios for the Salisbury Fire Department and not the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center.

Third, the SFD was not working medical staff he was working security. The person in question shouldn't be carrying a $2,500 radio into place of part time employment. He is obviously a wannabe that likes to hear himself talk.

As indicated earlier MYOB.

I wake up at 5am, get to work by 7, teach from 7:45 to 2:45, tutor my students until 4, come home and take care if my family, then start grading and planning lessons from 8-10. During the summer, I teach summer school and wait tables at night. I also take continuing ed classes to maintain my teaching certificate. I'm not lazy. However, I understand your belief that teachers are lazy--I can see by your post that your former teachers didn't do a very good job.

There are no across the board training standards to be an officer in Wicomico County, it is up to each station to police itself. Being trained by a "paid man" doesnt mean anything, you need to be trained by someone who is a fireman not just someone reading out of a book to collect a check.

I believe the comment was they've never put a fire out(something which needs to be done from the inside). 10 years in a company that does 75 runs a year means nothing and the county is not even close to being strict, just take a trip to the westside and let me know what you find.
