So WHO Is Telling The Truth? WBOC Responds

Thank you for reaching out. We are diligently working to reach agreement with DIRECTV on terms to ensure continued carriage of both WBOC-TV and FOX21 beyond July 31.

Both WBOC and FOX21 are available free over the air with an antenna. DIRECTV and other satellite and cable companies must negotiate with local broadcasters like us to secure the right to pick up our free signal and turn around and sell it to their customers for a fee.

We are simply seeking a fair deal, which adequately values our number-one-rated and award-winning news, sports, entertainment, and weather programming that is paramount to our local viewers. In fact, for both of our stations, we are asking for less than what DIRECTV pays some of our competitors – even though more people here on Delmarva watch our stations, making WBOC and FOX21 the Number 1 and Number 2 rated channels here.

Further, there’s been a significant change in the business model for network affiliates since our last retransmission agreement with DIRECTV. Recently both CBS and FOX began charging their affiliates “programming fees” in order to broadcast the networks. We now pay both networks hefty sums for the right to be the exclusive affiliate in this market. It’s a reversal from the ‘old days’ when networks paid TV stations to carry their programs. This “reverse compensation” is significant.

Additionally we pay studios hundreds of thousands of dollars to carry the syndicated programs we offer. In all, our programming costs run into the millions of dollars. These are some of the most-watched programs on television here on Delmarva. In order to be able to afford to pay the costs that the networks and studios now demand for their programming, local broadcasters must receive fair retransmission compensation from satellite and cable companies.

We are only asking for a reasonable and fair agreement from DIRECTV. That’s why we’ve asked for help to convince DIRECTV to reach an agreement with us. Calls from their customers to 1-800-531-5000 can help us reach an agreement and avoid any service disruption. For more information please visit wboc.com

Warm Regards,

Craig Jahelka
Vice President/General Manager

WBOC is lying don't believe a word from that man.

Bunch of hot air.

IF all the DirecTV subscribers used an antenna, WBOC would get nothing. Same as it was before.

You NEED those viewers for your ratings, which allow you to charge your advertisers more for air time.

You are attempting to double-dip here, plain and simple.

will wboc give thier advertisers a price break due to loss of viewers if they drop directv?

i know i do not have an antenna, and will not put one up.

The advertisers are the key. Instead of us dropping Directv as WBOC has been encouraging, the advertisers need to walk away from WBOC and spend their advertising dollars elsewhere. Then WBOC will get their act together.

What's with all of the WBOC employee turnover? If anyone kept track over the last 25 years the numbers are startling.

Their "free" broadcast signal sucks, as they want it to. I'll just go online if I want to read, or see, what's going on in Dover, Baltimore, Las Vegas, or what Kim Kardashian wore to the JayZ concert. Local news, I come here!

I noticed the weather guy Brian Keene seems to be gone. They sure seem to go through personnel at a fast pace. Seems like every time I turn on the news, its a new face or some kid fresh out of college.

#1 Really? Don't thinkthey are #1 any longer. I think WBOC news sucks, they are like robots reading whatever.I have changed to WMDT and I really like them and noticed they have been right with the weather more than WBOC. WMDT has personality WBOC does not.

There are two sides to every story and each side always presents their story in their favor. Therefore IMO either side is lying. If this piddling news bite is so important to readers why not bring in a third party to analysis each sentence and interpret which party is spinning their words more.

As for me I will just continue to watch the 8 local (9 if I ever have the desire to learn Spanish) on my rabbit ears. Splendid reception I should add (quite unlike some of your miserable commenters) and not give a rat's behind as to the outcome between WBOC and Directv.

Let WBOC eat cake, they're all the results of corporate greed. The value of the service they provide is greatly exaggerated.

Need fuel for the whirlybird in order to cover Delmarvas home towns!

I've had DirecTV since their beginning and thank goodness have always had New York CBS and FOX. Been just fine for 10+ years without WBOC.

WBOC Delaware's News Leader certainly is falling down on this one and many others. If it did not happen in the State of Delaware, we all know that it will not make the WBOC news. Corporate greed and the bottom line are their only consideration. Their news leader team even screwed up their 60th anniversary special. They stated that the shooting at the Centre at Salisbury, Maryland happened on Christmas Eve. Wrong answer BOC, the actual date was a Saturday December 23rd and not the 24th as they stated. I was there and I can well remember.

10:16 AM If the government did one of its famous studies, the rate of turnover for both stations would be about the same for the ti,e period you state

Other than a few "born heres", both stations are the starting gate for beginners. All "affiliated" stations across our nation experience the same turnover.

Wr have no choice but to watch wboc and fox21 because if I try to watch the same program on a different out of town channel its not airing. Has a stupid disclaimer about duplicate programing. It we old be nice to watch what I want on any channel.

boc and mdt are jokes. who cares, never watch them anyway! news? lmao they wouldn't know what news is even if they were involved in it!

I wonder what WMDT charges DirectTV? If at all??

This is stupid drama. Just one more reason I'm glad to have free TV with an antenna.

Yes no more black out dates for NFL Ticket. I'll finally see the great shots of my ravens and coaches discussions etc that I've paid for. Since wboc showed ravens games and worked with direct I couldn't watch the raven Sunday ticket games. Blacked out.

On Directv I was paying $10 a month for local channels. Recently I switch packages and all locals are free of included in the package and I don't have to pay $10 a month extra. Not buying this story.

BOC is a real joke!! I watch WMDT and it is MUCH better! WBOC has same news on that this blog has days before which is why I look here first and then to WMDT at 11. Sick of Delaware news so what would anyone miss? Corporate Greed is the only answer. Cut it off who cares!!!!

Why isn't there a number to call WBOC and make threats like they are asking us to do against D-TV.
I spoke to DIRECTV this morning and they assured us there would be no interruption to the CBS or Fox broadcast it might not be coming from WBOC but we will still be able to get NCIS & football

Who knew wboc was still on the air. Haven't watched it in years.
