(LANHAM, MD) – Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a police vehicle driven by a State Police civilian employee that struck two vehicles on I-495 in Prince George’s County this morning.
The victim is identified as Karen Holt-Williams, 59, of Temple Hills, Md. She was transported to Prince George’s Hospital Center where she was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Maryland State Police vehicle is identified as Cadet Sebastian L. Reyes, 18. Reyes has been employed as a cadet in the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division for eight months. Reyes and the other State Police cadet riding with him both refused treatment.
A third driver is identified as Amy A. Nash, 55, of Largo, Md. She said she was not injured in the crash. Two passengers in her car also reported no injuries.
The preliminary investigation indicates that shortly after 8:30 a.m. today, Reyes was driving an unmarked 2006 Ford Expedition on a routine assignment and was not driving with lights or siren activated. Reyes was apparently on the inner loop of I-495 when he used a crossover for emergency vehicles south of Rt. 50 to access the outer loop and head in the opposite direction. The investigation indicates Reyes pulled into the fast lane of the outer loop and accelerated to what witnesses describe as a high rate of speed. He was traveling in lane four of the interstate north of Rt. 50 when he lost control and sideswiped a 2000 Lincoln, driven and solely occupied by Holt-Williams.
The Lincoln then traveled to the left across the interstate and struck the jersey wall on the fast shoulder. The Ford Expedition went into a spin and struck a 2011 Subaru Outback driven by Nash.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team responded and is conducting a detailed crash investigation. Troopers notified the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office of the fatal crash and a member of that office responded to the scene. When complete, the State Police crash investigation will be presented to the State’s Attorney’s Office for review and a determination regarding charges in this crash.
In addition to the crash investigation, a Maryland State Police administrative investigation will also be conducted. This will review the employee’s actions according to Maryland State Police policies and procedures.

Reyes has been placed on leave. Maryland State Police cadets are civilian employees from 18-21 years old who work in the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division. Reyes was assigned to the commercial vehicle weigh station at the I-95/I-495 Park and Ride near College Park.

It's OK. This kid was "specially trained" to drive an SUV across traffic and at high rates of speed. Obviously, the rest of us should have stopped our cars so that we don't injure him during high speed maneuvers. The report will show this.

This guy may have made a mistake. But that is tolerated in favor of having the police in control of the roads.
If regular people would slow down then the police won't have to drive so fast. The bottom line, is they are protecting us from idiots who drive too fast.

3:03 they were with the commercial vehicle division not assigned to traffic or regular duties! They do not have to speed to stop a commercial vehicle to check his logs or for a safety inspection/overweight vehicle. The cadet was 'hot dogging' it lost control, crashed and caused a death!

If you believe that cops only drive above the speed limit to catch a 'perp' then you are off your meds and need to be readmitted. Cops, all cops, misuse and abuse their authority constantly and always. They're out of control and need to be reigned in on by the people they've sworn to protect and serve. Anon 8:51 Cadets start at 18. There is an explorer program but they do nothing but sit at the barracks and do paperwork. These were two Cadets. Neither has any authority to pull over cars. They were probabally on some type of vehicle transfer or food run and missed a turn. Hence the u-turn. They shouldn't have been in the car alone or driving the vehicle. I'm sure there will be a memo about it first thing on Monday about who can drive what.
Seeing all these people on here full of hate makes me sick. So quick to judge somebody without even knowing them. This kid is like a brother to me. He is the most devoted and hardworking person I have ever met. His whole dream was always to be a Maryland State Trooper. He has worked so hard in his life to get to where he is now. He will be the first person to be there for you if you need help, completely selfless in every way.He has been there for me more times than I can count an has been the greatest friend you could ask for. Anybody who is 18 years old is still not an experienced driver. Teenagers make mistakes all the time while driving. You hear about teenagers being in car crashes every single day yet just because he is a cadet you all want to watch him burn. He made a mistake everyone does it. It sucks that a life was taken and my heart goes out to that family but the cadet must also live with this for the rest of his life

As for your concern with Ms. Holt-Williams' family, I am certain they are overwrought with grief atm and are searching for answers why their loved one has been taken from them by such thoughtless actions aggressive actions by an immature wannabe cop. In the coming days their grief will probably turn to anger, if it hasn't already, and they too will question law enforcement's true reason. Ultimately, Ms. Holt-Williams' family will realize she was, in fact, murdered at the hands of an adrenaline filled self serving POS cop.

In the state of MD you may not be a police officer until the age of 21. He is a civilian employee . all parties involved. There are families on both sides that have been deeply changed by this accident. For Ms. Williams family they have lost a loved one and for this cadet he will have to live with this and not to mention for you pos posting on here...he has a family as well who loves him . It's not rocket science. Everyone CAN and SHOULD. But, you have moronic laws, lawmakers, and law enforcers that scare them to be compliant and put themselves at risk.
Not everyone is a sheep. Not everyone believes kops are the good guys. And more importantly, not everyone has ceded their power to the state.

12:24am and 11:59pm witnesses at the scene stated he pulled into traffic and accelerated at and to a high rate of speed! If that is not 'hot dogging' it and being in total disregard of others safety on the highway then please explain to us pos's how his actions were out to help all others using that stretch of highway! I am sure Ms. Williams family would be so relieved to hear how his actions were not reckless nor self serving but out to help his fellow citizens on the road!
