This list posted daily clears proves there is no need for a 24 hour paid fire crew.

Tax dollars are paying over 60 paid firemen to sleep every single night and chase ambulances all day long to justify their jobs.

Please tell me what the courts are going to say when the City of Salisbury and the Fire Department gets sued when they run over someone or gets into a serious accident responding to an ambulance call that they weren't dispatched on?

I love how all the paid firemen get on here with all their "What if" justifications for running on calls they aren't needed on. However, I never see them mentioning a "What if" they run over a small child chasing their ball into the street.

Volunteers can't commit to 24/7 coverage. Yet alone have a good response time in salisbury traffic.there are so many variables you doinks can't even fathom. You know it all yuppies just have no clue.

Joe look at this scare tactic posted on the Fat Guys blog. I doubt this was written by some paid Farmin's mommy but wouldn't be surprised. This person knows just a little bit to much to be anything but a paid firemen. It is nothing but lies and scare tactics. It's also an attack on the Salisbury police department and their heroes. Please post this so that the public can see what dirt tricks Rick Hoppes will use to turn the public on the council.

Comment Worthy A Post On Salisbury Fire Department Budget

I hope they realize exactly what has been done. Its great that they have "found" a way to pay for more police officers. But to not fund any new positions for the fire department is going to create a volatile situation for the citizens of this city in regards to fire/ems services. My son works for the department and if the city does not get a renewal on the grant for the positions then they will have to yet again close the one of the two stations during the daytime hours. It will also force them to shut down one ambulance, period!!! There have been countless times that I have been listening to the scanner and a fourth or fifth call for ems units goes out. I inquired how they "fill" the extra unit(s). He said they shut down the fire crew and have them run the ambulance call. That means that if there is a fire or other major event during this time you'll only have ONE piece of fire equipment coming. That's not enough if it is a real fire. How many times a year do you hear of the police saving a life? Very few. But I attended the medals day ceremony the last two years. And there are countless times the SFD has saved a life. Love them or hate them, these men and women are always there for you when you or a loved one need them. The city council is gambling with every life in the city with their lack of support for the fire department. And if your OK with allowing YOUR emergency to be handled at an extended time, then carry on. But I would bet my last dollar that the loss of these firefighters will have a greater negative effect on the citizens of this city, than thirty new police officers could generate positively. I would start the position myself, but I live on a "county" street in city limits. So I can't start a petition to urge the city council to make an amendment, but I can still enjoy my free fire protection, that the citizens of Salisbury cover for me with their tax dollars. Tell the council they have screwed up and your not going to stand quietly while they gamble with your safety. They need to keep at least enough to keep open the firehouse and that third ambulance.

3:17 must be a paid farmin with a GED. There are plenty of urban (that means cities) with 100% volunteer departments and some of them have hi-rise buildings. The EMS service as separate in those area and the fire dept. only responds upon request. Must be afraid he might need to get a real job.

Here is a story that sounds a lot like the Salisbury Fire Department. Over paid firemen and failing to use volunteers. This would make a good story for you to post.

State audit faults firefighter salaries in Cherry Hill

By Michael Boren, Inquirer Staff Writer Posted: May 30, 2014

Cherry Hill firefighters earned more than those in Philadelphia and New York City in recent years, and the approval of a nearly $25 million budget in 2012 went unnoticed by most residents because of a dismal election turnout, according to an audit released Wednesday by the state Comptroller's Office.

The audit, which covered 2010 and 2011, also criticized the Cherry Hill fire district for giving firefighters hefty longevity payments - essentially bonuses for each year of employment - and for failing to use volunteers. The fire district covers 71,000 people and has about 130 salaried employees.

The audit also examined the finances of fire districts in Brick and Woodbridge, and raised similar concerns.

Cherry Hill Mayor Chuck Cahn, in a statement released Wednesday, called the findings "troubling."

"It shows a trend of growth in spending that is simply not sustainable, and unnecessary," he said. "I have shared my concerns with the Board of Fire Commissioners and department leadership, and while I know they are taking steps to better control costs, I believe more can and should be done."

Hugh H. "Skip" Gibson, chairman of the Cherry Hill Board of Fire Commissioners, said the fire district lowered the starting salary and eliminated longevity payments even for those already receiving them under a collective-bargaining agreement signed in February.

In 2011, according to the audit, Cherry Hill firefighters earned on average $80,000 - nearly $10,000 more than the average salary of firefighters in New Jersey that year. Cherry Hill firefighters also started at a salary of $50,099, about $10,000 more than firefighters in New York City and Philadelphia, the audit said.

According to the collective-bargaining agreement signed Feb. 6, the starting salary for firefighters in Cherry Hill is now $41,000, an 18 percent drop. Gibson said firefighters were also receiving smaller raises, but he did not have the numbers.

On top of the salaries, the audit says, the Cherry Hill fire district also disbursed more than $1.2 million in longevity payments between 2010 and 2011. The payments were given to firefighters who had reached six years of employment and were awarded annually.

Acting state comptroller Marc Larkins said he would not characterize the spending by the Cherry Hill fire district and other audited districts as out of control, but said "excessive . . . would be a fair characterization."

Among concerns the audit cited was the absence of volunteer firefighters in Cherry Hill. The district "does not attempt to recruit volunteers, which results in increased costs to district taxpayers," the audit said. It suggested substituting volunteers for a quarter of the paid firefighters would save $2.7 million, or $83 per taxpayer, annually.

Owners of Cherry Hill properties on average pay $652 in fire district taxes, according to the audit.

Gibson, in a written response to the state, said the fire district welcomes volunteers, but "training and retention of volunteer firefighters is both difficult and costly."

The audit also recommended New Jersey fire districts hold their elections in November instead of February, which Gibson said he supported.

The audit cited dismal voter turnout, saying only 860 of 54,000 registered voters in Cherry Hill - fewer than 2 percent - participated in the fire district election in 2012.

The districts included in the audit have 90 days to respond with changes they have made or plan to make.

What an uneducated response. Didn't you have to pass a test to get hired? I guess that doesn't matter since you have an uneducated fire chief and an uneducated city administrator. Common Core would confuse this Bozo so much he would drop out of school. Wait, he already dropped out.

Typical paid fireman bashing others and trying to justify his paid job as a self proclaimed hero.

All these calls are burn victims and smoke inhalation patients from all the fires we had today, so all you naysayers please keep your comments to yourselves.

Please let me tell you about firemen responding with an ambulance. A few years ago during the severe snow storm my sister had a heart attack at home. snowed in husband called 911. By the time ambulance got there the firemen had shoveled a path to my desperate sister. Thank you guys you most likley saved her life.

Shoveling your sidewalk did not say anyone's life. This is an idiotic comment if I have ever heard one.

This is exactly the problem that the Salisbury Fire Department has.

Who do we contact to see if an audit can be done with the Salisbury Fire Department.

"The fire district covers 71,000 people and has about 130 salaried employees."

The Salisbury Fire Department has 60 salaried employees for 20,000 people.

Comparing Salisbury to Cherry Hill the Salisbury Fire Department would have 195 salaried employees while Cherry Hill has 135 salaried people. This really puts things into perspective and proves that Salisbury has way to many paid fireman and it's worse with the number of volunteers they have and are not utilizing.

Rick Hoppes needs to be fired and we the voters need to fire Jim Ireton and Jake Day.

I don't know about the rest of the tax payers in Salisbury, but every time I read these posts on the fire department I feel like I have been raped and need a shower.
