Cautious Optimism For ‘Takeover’ Event In Ocean City; Charities Pull Raffle Vehicles For Weekend

OCEAN CITY – While businesses are advised to conduct business as normal during “College Takeover Beach Week” this weekend, the event and its troubled past is on the minds of many.

In previous incarnations in other resort destinations, thousands of attendees of this organized event have caused major problems, including in the Oceanfront area of Virginia Beach last April when an estimated 40,000 college-aged individuals gathered and there were multiple stabbings, shootings and robberies. Videos of the riot-like situations have led to many concerns in Ocean City.

“In response to a number of calls and questions regarding the upcoming unsanctioned event scheduled to take place June 5-8, we want to assure our citizens that the Ocean City Police Department is fully prepared for the influx of visitors that this event and the weekend may bring to our town,” Police Chief Ross Buzzuro posted on OCPD’s Facebook page last Thursday. “We know there is potential for a group of college-aged visitors, which we historically see throughout the month of June and always prepare for accordingly. Like many of our other events in Ocean City, both formal and informal, we are planning and preparing for this event and any incident that may arise. We have a very comprehensive strategic plan ready that includes increased enforcement and high visibility, as well as assistance from our allied agencies.”

Buzzuro furthered business owners should staff accordingly and employees should be prepared for a busy June weekend. OCPD encourages all businesses to conduct their operations as usual.

This event sure is getting a lot of publicity. I'm sure those behind the "Takeover" event are thrilled with all of the free press. I understand the need to inform the public and cover this (it is justified), but people are giving this a lot of attention, which I'm sure is just fine by the "Takeover" people. Regardless of what may or may not happen over the weekend, mission accomplished for the event in getting attention.

Bring em on. I have Mr. Springfield and Mr. Browning to assure that my weekend is safe.

If this event goes off without incident, I certainly hope WBOC does a public apology to the people of Ocean City and all of the visitors here this weekend. After they are the ones that spread this mass hysteria. You know it's good for the ratings, of which they have none.

On-Scene Report:
Not many from the "Takeover..." group are in OC as yet.
BUT many of the ones that ARE here have this little fun thing they like to do, and that is walking across Coastal Highway ("Eight Lanes Of Death"), in traffic, in the middle of the block, and very slowly. It's like playing freakin' Frogger out there! So be real alert and careful when driving that highway this - or any - weekend. But this weekend especially.
The June Bugs outnumber the college people right now, but that may change. Maybe not.

I am optimistic as well for this weekend! The beach will be overrun by IGNORANT COLLEGE STUDENTS that think they can do what ever they want! I am also OPTIMISTIC that every officer in Worcester County as well as every surronding County can fill their quotas this weekend alone, just with those tourists!

1:26 That (Frogger) happens every summer weekend.

it's gonna be interesting that's for sure. You know the laws of physics don't apply to certain low IQ individuals. Good luck playing frogger!

The history of this group in other areas justifies the attention they are receiving from the police and town officials. Information that has been given to the public is very justified and an obligation to let people know to be cautious. You got a problem with that then move to Ocean Pines

I work in Ocean City on the overnight Patrol said...

I met a few last night...I was impressed how they Hate Obama and his Obama-Care, and how they anticipate his impeachment....

Just FYI: "They" are not here. Not coming. One of the major clubs in OC had it's slowest Friday night (weekend after Memorial Day) EVER.

Rumor has it that there was a 50% cancellation rate on hotel reservations.
One positive note: I assure you that OC is the safest freakin' town in the country tonight. You can't swing a cat and not hit a cop!

Please note "college-age" individuals. I wonder how many of these thugs are actually students.
