Look again.....the 2nd 3rd and 4th pictures show there was NO fire truck there. Only the picture at the top shows a portion of a fire truck. Stop trying to twist things to fit your own agenda.

I guess none of the managers in the Walmart had a fire extinguisher they could have used? Looks like they may have been concerned if the fire was on their property. I guess not.
They had to call around and find out what restaurant they were hiding the fire truck behind while eating lunch!
I heard the police talking about it then they called Station two. they called them.a couple of times for backup and ended up calling Delmar. delmar. was responding and they canceled them.
Bin there - done that ...3 companies stood by early last Sunday morning on Wainwright watching Ed & Jojo's house turn to ash .... & ordered doughnuts ... a little water MIGHT have helped!!! !!
Have the highly trained SFD had the equipment out for the daily ride around and meal stop, the rest of the equipment was chasing abulances. Personnel that could have responded in alternative vehicles were out shaking down the fire boat on its weekly inspection. Fires are all low priority. Surprised Delmar wasn't dispatched. Being all volunteer they could have handled it properly.

Was 911 called immediately? Fire companies are dispatched from 911. How was traffic? Was it bumper to bumper and engines Could not get through? I've seen that happen twice on the North side of town.

Somebody did this same deed in the same lot up by Wendy's a week or two ago.

Why don't they simply issue Gift Cards. That way, the FD can simply put the fire out, buy 85 pizzas, and let the local municipality pay for it.

What happened to the 60 paid firemen? They pick and choose their calls so you never know what you will get. If the volunteers scratch you can blame that on Rick Hoppes for doing absolutely nothing to recruit and retain quality volunteer. You can blame Rick Hoppes for not having a policy to make sure volunteers are available on nights and weekends. No one communicates with each other to make sure someone is going to respond. You can blame Rick Hoppes for making the paid duty crew respond to all the good calls and cancelling the volunteers. The volunteers are treated as second class citizens and only used to mop up at the real fires. It's Rick Hoppes' and Jim Ireton's fault no matter what you call it.

Yeah, 710, and it rained a couple of days ago, it's June and springtime, not the mid July through August drought season. Arson is arson, cig butts are 365 days a year/ Why two events in two weeks at the same location?n

Simply amazing to watch the responses here regarding this incident. The first fact to consider is that this incident is in Station 2's district. It is Sunday and the responses are handled by Volunteers on weekends. One of the photos shows Squad 2. A brush truck designed for grass fires and the reason its there ? Because the Volunteer members were unable to provide a driver for the fire engine. The average citizen cannot tell if the firemen that responded are paid or volunteer. Standard policy dictates that after 5 minutes,if a piece of fire apparatus fails to respond, the duty crew from Station 16 is alerted. I'm not sure if the duty crew ever made it to the call. What I am sure of is that this was a Volunteer response. Those are the facts of the matter.
Yeah you people really annoy me. I wish that you know how it works. Yes, this is the fire district of Salisbury Station two, and on the weekends they are manned by all volunteers, yes all volunteers. Once the 911 call is placed, station two is alerted, they wait 4 minutes, and they re-alert. After another four minutes, they move on to the next to due Firestation which in this case is Delmar Station 74. However Station 2 did have fire apparatus responding after the alert for Delmar and Wicomico central canceled Delmar station 74. I really wish that you people would take the time to understand and know what you're speaking about before you open your mouths. Why don't you people investigate the SOP's and see how it's supposed to operate before you open your damn mouth. If you want to make a difference why don't you volunteer yourself to serve your community instead of sitting on here and trolling and hiding behind a screen name. If you think that you can do it better than by all means go for it. It's very easy for you people to hide behind a screen name, and belittle and criticize the fire department but you're the same people who would piss and moan if your home or your belongings were on fire and they didn't get there fast enough. If that's not the pot calling the kettle black, then I don't know what the hell is!!! don't you people have jobs? With someone criticizes you or your performance, you don't like it right? How do you think these fine men and women feel when your comments belittle and criticize them? Why don't you put yourself in their shoes literally and see what they do.

Dang! You are on to something.
It would be nice for calls on the north end of Salisbury to have a station there, but no they had to have the Retreat & Spa on Lake St.no matter how much sense it makes! Where would the money have come from? 1/2 the $$$$$ from Lake St. would have provided for two fine facilities! City of Salisbury = Greek for "getting screwed by your government daily"!
Inconsiderate nasty smokers tossing their cigarettes in the mulch. Have seen it many times. Hope one of those cars was theirs!

9:07 what a jerk. I can also validate his claim. I called them once because a cigarette butt started a fire in the mulch at the small memorial gardens at route 50 and civic ave a few years ago on a very dry and windy day.

If plastic is laid under mulch spontaneous combustion can occur.
I took the bottom two photos and I can clear some things up.
1. Traffic was very light yesterday as my wife even commented while we were heading to WalMart that she hadn't seen traffic so light in such a long time.
2. When we arrived there was one State Police Car on scene and One SPD arriving.
3. When we arrived it was a small fire on a couple of bushes.
4. It did take a very long time for the Fire Department to arrive. It was close to 30 minutes or so.
5. The SFD Ambulance was on scene way before the trucks got there.
I am not a hater of any fire department but all the reasons listed above as to why they couldn't make it to the fire quickly are just excuses.
I don't care about the fact that they had to call in volunteer's in order to get on scene. Fact is this did not happen in a remote area and taking over 30 minutes is just way to long for fire trucks to respond to a fire in town limits.
If they had to call up people to get them there then they need to make some sort of adjustments in order to quicken their response time.
If more cars were parked in that area things could have gotten ugly real quickly and a 30 minute response time would have done little to prevent that.
From time of dispatch the first piece out was five minutes. The first piece was station twos squad, which has a small pump on it. The call was for a small mulch fire, so this piece was appropriate. A fire engine would have been preferred. However they did not have a driver for that piece. Remember station two is a volunteer station nights and weekends. When they get a call they have to respond to the station to get equipment out. If they do not get enough people or those who can drive the engine, it does not get out. A medical assist came in shortly after that call was dispatched and the duty engine had to take that call. Once the squad arrived on scene, and saw the cars on fire they requested an engine to respond. Station two was altered, which took them a very long time to get out. The assistant chief asked central to alert Delmar, which he cancelled when the engine finally got out.
Every day on here, people say they want a volunteer response. It does not always work, that is why it is a good idea to have a combination department. Each needs to rely on the other to best serve the city.
Sadly, one car belonged to an employee, the other to a store vender.
Wow ! Somehow educated and factual replies have been allowed to be posted here to contradict the initial claims. The paid firemen had nothing to do with this call. The deficiencies have been attached to the appropriate group and dispatch facts have been stated. For the gentleman that claims it took 30 minutes I say bull. It may seem to you like 30 minutes, but that's not possible. The car would burn to the frame in 30 minutes.
9:18, Let me straighten you out just a little bit here.
I received a call telling me there was a fire. I asked that person if they were there, yes. Could you take a picture and send it to my phone, they did. It took me a little while to get to my computer and publish the story. A half hour, (or so) later I got another message from that same person that the SFD had just arrived.
NOW, could it have taken a while for people to call 911, perhaps. However, I doubt that.
To blame the Volunteers is just ridiculous. You have Delmar and Station 16 who could have responded.
The car didn't catch on fire until a good bit of time after the fire started.
The fire was already burning when I arrived but was only bushes.
We saw the smoke from the light near Naylor Mill Road. The SPD was arriving as I was at the light to turn into Wal-Mart. I then parked & headed into Wal-mart with my wife.
I saw the fire was getting bigger and checked to see if SBY News had any info on it yet from check on my Cell phone.
When I saw it was not listed I called Joe's number on the site and spoke to him explaining the situation.
There was a 6 minute time lapse from the time I called Joe and the Time I sent him the pictures according to my Cell phone.
Now factor in the time I was at the light at Naylor Mill stop light, Then was at the Turn light to get into Walmart. The light was also longer than usual because SPD crossed the highway from the area of Appplbees which caused us to wait another round of the lights before we could turn in.
Then we had to get into the parking lot which was slow going due to all the people rubber necking as they drove by.
Factor all that together along with the fact that the fire was already burning big enough to be seen from Naylor Mill intersection and you can clearly tell it was a slow response by the Fire Dept.
They still never showed up until a good bit after I took the pics. I think close to 30 minutes is a good estimate.
Maybe others that were there can add insight.
I am not beating down on the Fire Dept. I don't think they just sat around when the call was made. My point is that if it takes them this long to respond to a Fire that is not very far away from the Station then they need to find a way to improve on their response time.
If this was a home and lives were depending on them it would have been a really bad scene.
I am sure the fire department themselves realize it took too long and will more than likely try to address the issue.
As stated 16 was on a call.
Why is anyone defending their actions here?
Just imagine how long it would have taken if traffic was heavy and there was gridlock on the whole north end as it is usually.
Something stinks here absolutely no reason for this type of response time from a paid department ? Somebbdy with the "real" facts needs to come foward. There is more to this story Joe. This does not add up.

This was not the paid crew. Nights and weekends from station two is a volunteer response.
Mulch Can conbust from decomp.... sun reflecting or shining off or through glass can start a fire. Just like I Am now as I light a cig after my verbal screwing I just gave you. Blame a smoker....doink!
Why did the person call 9-1-1 instead of J-O-E? Just saying. because He can't fix or stop everything!
To the people claiming that it took approximately 30 minutes for the fire department to arrive on scene, When you are on scene of an emergency situation it can seem like forever before help arrives. In fact it only took about 11 minutes from the time of dispatch until the first fire unit arrived on location. Station 2 was dispatched at 1402 hours and Squad 2 arrived on location at 1413 hours. that's 11 minutes. that's a far stretch from claim that it took 30 minutes for a piece of apparatus to arrive on location.
