OC Petition Drives Currently Underway; Effort Seeks To Cap Debt, Reduce Taxes

OCEAN CITY – Following the success of a parking petition earlier this year, the leader of Ocean City Taxpayers for Social Justice (OCTSJ) group is starting a petition drive for two charter amendments aimed at capping Ocean City’s debt and reducing taxes.

On Monday evening, OCTSJ spokesperson Tony Christ announced to the Mayor and Council there are two new petition drives being circulated.

“During the 18 months I have been coming and appearing here, and in the 60 years I have been in Ocean City, I have been trying to think what is wrong, what is not going the right way, and I have come up with something,” Christ said.

Tony Christ, now that is a piece of work, working closely with another idiot, Joe Hall.

That bunch you all got in there now are the idiots 6:39. OC voters are as dumb as rocks.
They had a fiscally conservative council and the voters voted them out and voted in those that spent every penny. There is no reason why OC isn't flush with money due to the real estate boom but it's not and has to borrow.
And you yourself are clearly and idiot for shooting from the hip and not knowing what you are talking about.
This coucil is irresponsible and are leaving a mess for future generations. They obviously could care less about their children but other people do and don't want to leave them saddled in debt. Now wise up!

Mr. Christ said, "....We wish to make Ocean City an affordable place where people want to stay and or move to..."
Are you KIDDING me???
Mr. Christ, with all due respect, this is a RESORT town. This isn't Bethany, Lewes, Rehoboth, or Dewey. It's a very unique town.
It's a business. The Town of Ocean City is a business.
Think of Disney World. Think on living on Main Street in Disney World and complaining about the daily parades.
If you don't like the noise of the airplanes, don't live next to the airport.
Mr. Christ, many of your points are valid, but certainly not for Ocean City. You should move north to Bethany. They would LOVE your ideas up there.
But leave that crazy, insane, carnival of a town of Ocean City alone.
People like it that way.

Ocean City is not a town, it is a business.

Are you kidding 10:28? You don't think OC should be a place where people want to visit and/or move?
Your thinking is convoluted.
OC is not a business. It's not Main St in Disney which is owned by one entitiy. It's owned by many people and needs to be managed with that in mind.
Now being you do think of OC as a business you must be disgusted with the current council. If OC were a business they wouldn't have a job cleaning the toliets. They spend recklessly and then come up with goofy ideas like parking meters which is akin to peeing in the wind now that they've cleared out the town's coffers.

Beware of any group that has "Social Justice" in their name!

Christ is a nut for sure, however the idea isn't bad. The voters put in Dare, the biggest spender of all time, then followed up with lieing Recor that could care less. Good job! I'll stay in WOC.

As long as trimpers, thrashers, secrets, fagers, and the other good ole boys are making their required $$, mayor rick will keep the ship in the same direction. more cash, control, and more high paid part time employees making 5 times what the local employee base makes. Not true, then where does the 17% winter unemployment come from? btw, comparing oc to disney, a fantasy. real truth, oc compared to atlantic city..

OC's lost it's appeal. In the dead of winter it resembles the ghetto. Taxes and fees are so high people do winter rentals which brings in a bad element. All winter long you read over and over about the drug arrests.

To 7:04 Posting - OC is nothing more than a money pit. The people are enslaved to the government officials. Take-a-look at what the residents pay in real estate taxes, front foot assessments, water fees, sewage fees, condo fees, hazard & flood insurance. When you interview most residents they will even admit that they are now slaves.

Even Granville Trimper, god rest his soul, is assessed more than 1 million annually by the cut throat officials. I would get out of Ocean City . . .and the sooner the better.

Yeah.... Ocean City is a horrible town. So horrible in fact that about a quarter of a million people visit the town each day just to see what a hell-hole this place is. Even the business owners..They think it's so horrible that they don't even open their businesses for about five months after serving all those people in this horrible town.
Get real, people. OC is COMPLETELY different than any town in MD - and you can't compare it to any other town in the country. Unique city. Unique problems. All being handled by people that care about the past, present, and future of this resort. It's being run just fine. Lighten up.

LOL 3:56-Keep on keep on with the excuses.
It's makex ZERO difference that "OC is COMPLETELY different than any town in MD"
That is nothing but a cop out.
Problems are problems. What is so "unique" about out of control spending, crime, high business turnover, etc?

"a quarter of a million people visit the town each day"
FYI-Some weekends may hit that number but very few weekdays. Your talking 1980's numbers.

"Out of control spending" is debatable.
I'll address "crime, high business turnover":
First, crime: You really don't think that OC has unique crime problems? Every square foot of Ocean City is a potential "hot spot" for crime during high season. It's not like the authorities know where the trouble spots are. Look at Salisbury...they KNOW where the crime takes place and still cannot control it. I would say the OCPD does an incredible job considering the massive amount of people that come through the town.
Next: "high business turnover": Again, you really don't think that OC is unique in that regard? Just guessing, I'd say that about 70% of the businesses in town are solid, stable, long-lasting enterprises. ALL the rest are like a traveling carnival show. I'd say that's pretty unique from any other town in MD, wouldn't you?
Though I'm not knowledgeable at all about the spending in OC, I will say this: Every single one of the people that have been elected to run this town are honest, upstanding citizens that have the interest of the future in the town as their priority. There may be some personal interest in some areas when it comes to votes, but show me a town and a council where that doesn't happen. The council is wide open - very visible - and highly scrutinized. I absolutely trust the integrity of each one of the members. I think the town is doing just fine in their hands.

10:39-There is nothing debatable (nor honest) about a council that promises the moon without a thought in their heads where the money is coming from.
Upstanding citizens would at least care about their own children and not leave them saddled in the debt they are creating. They could care less about the future of OC and it shows. They are not only irresponsible council memebers but parents as well.

10:39-You crime analysis is ludicrous.
Any area anywhere in the world is a potential hot spot for crime. Some areas are less likely in OC (just like everywhere else in the world) to be troublesome.
I imagine though with you analysis you must be pretty disgusted with the choice of police chief. By your own account OC crime is "unique" so why in the heck wouldn't the council have chosen a chief who has been in the dept and understands these "unique" problems? That would have been the prudent thing to do.
