House Passes Increased Penalties For Driving & Using Phone

The Maryland House of Delegates has passed a measure to strengthen laws against distracted driving.

The House voted 106-29 on Thursday to make talking on a handheld cell phone while driving a primary offense. That means a police officer could pull a driver over, if observed talking on a cell phone.

Now, police can only ticket someone for driving while talking on a handheld cell phone if the driver has been pulled over for another offense.

I am amazed the number of drivers I see that have an "ear ache" but then I realize it's only holding a cell phone to your head is not an ear ache. So many vehicles, so many phones. I think some may even be "texting" - how dangerous is that!!

Unless your a cop then theirs no problem.

Most minor traffic violations started out as a secondary,ie; seatbelt, headlights on in bad weather,cell-phones. It was only a time for the eased the stop reason, and increased the point and fine amount.

It's been quite a while since I've rolled up next to a cop who was NOT on the phone.

and there was 29 idiots in the house of delegates that are against it!!

It is about time.

Cell phones are usefull for speed control. They start talking, get over in the left lane, and slow down. I love the people holding the phone in their right hand while holding the phone to their left ear and trying to see if anybody is coming. Then they pull out anyway.

Now cops will pull you over for no reason and claim they thought you were on the phone.

Can I pull over all the local cops and sheriff's I see talking on their phones, AND texting! Just look around and watch them, I see it everyday!

I agree a lot of cops I see are on a phone. why should it be ok for them.

Some people can handle multitasking, some can not. If they can not handle doing 2 things at once, they may break one of the thousands of traffic laws already on the books. On cops, most have to multitask all of the time anyway. What is the difference in talking on a phone, or talking on a radio (a 2 piece cell phone that uses the same frequencies)?

Don't worry, guys. The cops aren't going to put down their cell phones long enough to pull somebody over.

Cops in general laugh at the cell phone laws. They joke with each other about how silly it is for anyone to think they can enforce such laws.Next there will be a law that says you can't hold a hamburger in one hand,a drink in the other, and have a cell phone propped between your head and neck while driving a stick shift.

This is probably the only thing the politicians in Annapolis did right. I drive for a living and all of the "near misses" or accidents I see monthly are caused by inconsiderate drivers on their cell phones.

Is a hamburger considered a handheld device?
