ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A Maryland Senate panel has voted against raising the state's minimum wage to $10 an hour by 2015.
The Senate Finance Committee voted 8-3 on Wednesday against the measure.
Maryland's current minimum wage is $7.25 per hour.
Supporters of the measure said that low-wage workers are in desperate need of a raise and insist that higher wages would increase consumer spending and inject millions into the state's economy.

it will NOT increase spending, it will contract. LIBERALISM always gives the EXACT OPPOSITE of its stated intent.
raising minimum wage - raises the cost of goods which raises STATE SALES TAX REVENUE - thats what they want, UNTIL people spend less. . . duh. stupid libertards
The only one that would gain would be the state and they would miss spend this as they always do
If you want a raise, educate yourself, work harder, make me more money, impress my customers, and I'll give you a raise. Otherwise, you stay where you are! It's really that simple. I would gladly pay anyone more per hour who produced more per hour! In fact, I do not hire minimum wagers because they usually work at or below that level, and never strive to improve themselves. If you can't produce enough for me to pay you $15-$18 an hour, I cannot have the time to babysit you or even hire another to babysit you, so you will not be working for me. I need qualified individuals!
although i Totally Disagree with mandating a minimum wage; it was Never intended to be a Living Wage. high school students usually go for these jobs becuase they're "entry level" jobs and give them cash to buy gas for their vehicles, date, save for future, etc. if you think for one moment these jobs are going to pay you a "living wage", you're not a thinking person.
if you want to earn more; get more education or start your own business with the earnings you save from your entry jobs.
this whole discussion should be common sense; but alas with the liberals it must be explained and even then i'm not sure they get it.
last post was awesome!
Laminol (Harvard) manufacturing on Glen avenue start a minimum wage and after several years of involved detailed work and learning you might get over $9/hr.
These are not minimum wage jobs but THAT's what they pay. The state cares as much about these trapped people as you fortunate economic wonks.
"According to Raise Maryland, a group advocating an increase in the minimum wage, Costco is among 70 businesses and groups that support the Maryland legislation. Costco pays a starting hourly wage of $11.50 in all states.
But other businesses said the measure would cripple their ability to grow - and, in some cases, to operate.
Jeff Zellmer, vice president of government affairs for the Maryland Retailers Association, said at a hearing earlier this month that Costco just "wants to come in and eliminate the competition." Zellmer said the legislation is not a jobs bill but a "loss of jobs bill.""
How about you posting your business info so some of us hard working people who have cheap bosses that hasn't given anyone a raise in ten years a chance to better themselves?
if they don't like $7.25 an hr. , go back to ole mexico or africa
The point is 11:28, some businesses cannot afford to pay employees much more.
I personally know of several of these small independant businesses. One the owner is open 5 days a week and usually she works closed by herself on a 6th day. Their profits are around
$60,000/yr. Out of this she has to pay herself.
I know of another business that make no profit. He's a retired fed government worker who opened a small business. He makes no money out of it for himself and has even had to use his own money to keep afloat but does give several college and high school students jobs.
This would put more of the owner type hobby kind of businesses out of business also. Happened in Lancaster county. Alot of the hobby shops like toy trains, car museums, antique shops were more of a hobby for the owners than money makers. They did hire a few part timers at minimum wage to help out but when it was increased the businesses ended up closing down because they couldn't operate at any more a greater loss then they already were.
