‘A Difficult But Necessary Letter’: Shocking Letter From a Father Disowning His Gay Son Goes Viral

“James: This is a difficult but necessary letter to write.”

So begins a letter, posted on the website Reddit, that has since come to form a viral symbol of anti-gay bigotry. The letter is from a father, ostensibly to his (adult) gay son after that son came out of the closet, and its contents may shock you regardless of your stance on gay marriage. There certainly is no pretense on the part of the writer to hate the sin, but love the sinner.

I can't imagine not loving my child anymore because of the choices he makes. I will love my son til the day I die, no matter what.

he's not a father. no father would ever do that to a child. what a sorry excuse for a sperm donor.

Why would you stop loving your son because of the way God made him? It is not a choice.

Why would God make him gay if he didn't agree with being gay. Answer. He didn't. This is a chosen lifestyle. We all choose how we live our life. We choose if we are going to go out and kill someone or go out and be productive adults. It's a choice.

I'm a chain smoker. I've smoked since the 4th grade. I KNOW it is incredibly detrimental to my health. I KNOW it is not a natural lifestyle. I KNOW it is very obnoxious to many to flaunt my habit in public. After many attempts, I've given up trying to break this habit/addiction.
I read a study where it is proven that there is a part of one's DNA that compounds this urge to smoke, and that DNA is inherent since conception.
Using this analogy, will all of you anti-smoking bigots please have some compassion and please get off my case. I can't help it - I was born with it. Let me smoke in peace.
Anyone (other than I) see a connection here?

I think all the bible thumpers should try reading it instead.

It is a choice!

3:29 your argument is ridiculous. but keeping with your train of thought, why would God make people who kill other people when he doesn't agree with murder? why would God make child molesters when he doesn't agree with that? please, enlighten us.

4:19
He does NOT make them that way. God gives us free will to do as we want. It's YOUR choice in life what you do with it. God does not make killers, he does not make gays and he does not make child molesters. They have chosen their course in life against God's will.

Ten to one it was written by the gay son because he's a petulant little sissyboy who acts out this way and has been all his life. Being gay is a "Look at me!" thing. It's unnatural and a socially deviant behavior, much like publishing "letters" when we don't get our way.

Hey, Ireton, when's your next hissey fit?

Hey, 406 smoker; I feel your pain! After doing the patch several times and just plain deciding that I LOVE everything about smoking, I quit for a year, but succunbed again. Here's what I did next. After suffering through coughing attacks that I could not survive 10 tears from now, I bought "little cigars" Too strong to inhale, get the "full flavor". Same smoke, inhale air first, puff away, exhale! Nothing in your lungs. Oh, sure, the mouth and nose are still at risk, but I am no longer addicted to Nicotine, and I can make a pack of those last 4 days easy! (from 2 packs / day)
Paych & cigars. Better than dying from cigs...

We are free spirits. What we do with time is a free choice.

Except for here in America where everyone wants to tell everyone else HOW to live our lives.

Now to the sodomite: go and sin no more.

It appears to me that if it is a "choice" then at some point you had feelings for the same sex and made the choice not to. Funny. I never had a choice. I did what came naturally to me.

Now wait a minute I need to reference a few comments here. While I do not promote a gay lifestyle, and I hope my children grow up to be straight and have babies, being gay cannot be compared to a smoking habit. Nicotine is addictive. Physically. It is a substance. Futhermore, I don't believe every gay person chooses to be considered an outcast, a pervert or a sexual deviant. Back in the 70s and 80s, gay men were being found dead, murdered because they were gay. I'm sure there are gays that choose to be gay. But there are also gays like my brother. My oldest brother, who died of AIDS in 1988, was very feminine from the time he was little. His voice was feminine. When you look at a picture of him standing side by side with my other brothers, there is an obvious difference in his stance and "girly" demeanor. He used to dress up in my mom's clothes and pretend to cook along side her, while his brothers were outside playing with trucks. He was called "little fag" by the kids in school. He was a kind, musically talented and artistic man. He eventually moved to San Fransisco where he could blend in and enjoy life. He met his partner, who was with him at his deathbed.

So I will say wholeheartedly, that I do not believe that all gay people choose to be gay. I believe there was something genetically different with my brother.

And one more thing - Yes, the Bible says it is wrong. Paul said it was wrong. But we are all born imperfect. We are all born into a sinful nature. Some are prone to be heterosexually addicted to sex. We all have tendencies. Maybe if all the gay people had Christian upbringing and a Christian homelife, they would be educated as young kids that it is wrong. Not all people are familiar with scripture. Not all kids are taught these things. A lot of them have to figure it all out on there own.

A person's sexual preference is a physiological imperative, choice has nothing to do with it. Homosexuality is not common, but does exists in other primates. Of course major religions reject homosexuality because it does not lead to a continuation of the community, and at the time that most major religions were beginning, keeping up the birth rate was important.

When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. Exodus 21:7

So are only some parts of the Bible true? Someone with more knowledge than me please enlighten me.
