Expect Council To Reject Fireworks Funding Tonight
Considering I have been around City politics for several years now, after seeing what Mayor Ireton did to propose a $5,000.00 donation to the Red, White & Boom Fireworks in this years budget and since the entire expense has already been funded, it won't fly.
There is absolutely no point whatsoever for the Council to agree to pony up $5,000.00 above and beyond the many thousands of dollars worth of resources you'll already be paying for with Police and Fire protection already committed to.
Considering Mr. Dunn has raised 100% of the funding, I have to believe Mayor Ireton is simply trying, (ONCE AGAIN) to make this Council look ridiculous. However, this time around YOU can actually make him look like the fool that he is by simply understanding the money is NOT necessary.
Mr. Dunn told me last week he thought the Mayor was trying to donate the $5,000.00 for next year but went on to say he was doing everything he can to "keep government out of it". The funding Mayor Ireton wants is for 2012 and not 2013, that's a fact. Mr. Dunn went on to say that he believes the Mayor should have the power to make such donations and I agreed to disagree.
Mr. Dunn also stated that when he mentioned the $40,000.00 last week he meant that as their goal. Mind you, it took a few days before he contacted me to tell me that but it's whatever.
In the mean time we are already seeing complications just as soon as government gets involved. Just know what the Council will more than likely do by voting this down is simply based on the fact that they have enough money to run the event this year without any help from the City.

I have to take a major exception to Ms Shields characterization of the City funding the fireworks so there will be something "free" for families to do. It will only be free to those who do not pay City taxes, to the rest of us it will be another form of welfare for those who pay no taxes. There are many other worthwhile places for the City to spend our tax dollars. If Ms Shields wants to provide free entertainment, she can write a check out of her own bank account, as apparently many others have already done. The City's contribution is the many services being provided by our employees at the event, setting up before the event,a nd cleaning up afterwards.
This whole thing is strange. If Mr Dunn doesn't need the money for this year's display then he doesn't need it and should be at the meeting saying just that.
Tonight's biggie was rejecting Ireton's proposed budget despite his threat to veto the Council's budget -- kudos to Ms. Shields for her vote.
I grew up right here in salisbury..Some vivid memories of my childhood were going to a 4th of july picnic with my family followed by fireworks with the family...Such a shame that kids today, unless in the past years they went to the shorebirds games or to other locations, can't enjoy the same family memories..Hats off to Mike Dunn if he get this done..Council should be ashamed of themselves for not wanting it..
It's not that council doesn't want it! It's that THE MONEY has already been obtained. Why, then, need it be budgeted by the council?
Spend the money for fixing the streets. They are in very sad shape.
Dunn's big-bang will bomb -- wait and see.
Anyone watching last night could tell this was a drama ploy by Ireton.
Where were all of these people when Tilghman/Dunn/Gordy put an end to the Jaycees fireworks in Salisbury? I do believe the fireworks were then funded by the community and not the city. Now all of a sudden Dunn moves back into the city he fled so he can once again run for office and continue the reign of terror he was part of in the past. These fireworks are for political gain, not the community. I can remember fireworks being held at the Center at Salisbury, Parkside High School, the old Mall then all of a sudden they decide there is no safe place to hold these events. Suddenly Salisbury has a safe place to launch these fireworks. I call BS!!!! The fireworks should have never been taken away.
Shanie wants anything free, she thinks everything from the government is free because she hasn't paid any taxes since she lost her husband. The only thing she pays is the slot machines at the VFW.
Mayor Ireton asks, what's next? I'll tell you what's next. You can go home to Mom and your apple pie and Joe Albero will fill your seat. That's what's next.
I agree with the council's vote. Funding for this type of event should be raised through corporate donors and the public. The City will have to bear some expense by providing police and public works support, a total I'm sure will be much higher than $5,000.
Two things:
Thank you council, including Ms. Mitchell who surprised me, for voting this down-you did the right thing.
Mayor Ireton- Have you no shame? your showboating, huffy-puffy comments regarding the correct council decision were immature and uncalled for. As a former supporter, I tell you now-I will do everything in my power to fight against you ever holding another public office- YOU ARE A DISGRACE!
Well said 8:52AM and I agree totally.
Maybe Mike Dunn can have his precious public radio station raise the money...
Ireton is Dunn!
