Pemberton Students Add Color To Community Through Artwork On DisplayAat Wicomico Library

Students in Megan Franco’s second-grade class at Pemberton Elementary, inspired by the tale of “Jamaica Louise James,” a girl who used her artistic talents to brighten the drab world around her, have created colorful pictures of their own that are now on display in the Wicomico County Library.

In the story by Amy Hest, Jamaica has a cool idea to use her artistic talents to create pictures of people and places around her to be hung in the local subway. The pictures were placed in the subway to add color to the drab tiled walls and to lift the spirits of those who traveled through the station day in and day out.

After reading the story, the Pemberton students thought it would be a cool idea to hang kid- created pictures of our community to bring more color to and brighten the day of members of our own community. Through the collaboration of Mrs. Franco and Karen Apolenis, Technology Coach, the students used technology to connect to their real world surroundings by exploring places around Salisbury through Google Maps. Then the students used a kid friendly graphic design program called Pixie to create an image of a place in their community. Once the pictures were edited and complete, we were fortunate to have Wicomico Public Library serve as a gallery for these pictures. A daily log provides a place for people to comment once they’ve seen the pictures.

8:48 So proud of your 2nd grader!!! :)

Both Franco & Apolenis are wonderful teachers. Franco has the potential to go far, including administration, but she has to develop a backbone first for standing up for a student's rights. We don't need any more weak administrators like Twilley. WCBOE is in need of many strong leaders to replace the many leaders who only lead parents, teachers, and students down the path that is easiest for them.
