Projected Teachers Pensions Cost To Be Shifted To Maryland Counties

The State of Maryland proposes to shift teachers pensions obligations onto the Counties in an effort to try and trim the state deficit. The last time the State did this was during a special session in 1992 whereby they enacted a 1992 Budget Reconciliation Act. At that time - the State shifted the teachers social security portion onto Maryland counties and it cost Wicomico County $2,308,336.00 dollars. Using the same proportional formula as then - here are the projected cost that each county will have to bare if the O'Malley administration and legislature shifts the proposed $239 million dollars onto the backs of local counties.

Allegany $3,276,095.87

I can see right now - there just isn't enough money to go around. Just how much more can the average person take?

It's a good thing the County Council didn't approve the new school. If Wicomico had to pay for the new school and then add this on top of that where would Wicomico County be?? (Deep in the hole!!) Rick has known this was coming for a couple of years now but did he prepare?? Don't think so, he just keeps spending our taxpayer money!! When will it stop and when will Wicomico become accountable for it's funds and get back in the black on it's books?? Thank you Wicomico County for looking out for the average resident of Wicomico County.

WTF! Just do like Obama...borrower it! When will this insanity stop? Of course Rick knew...and again he lied flat out to the council and citizens without blinking an eye.

As much cash that Worcester County generates for the state, their piece of the pie sure was a measly amount.

Woe! That is a pile of unfunded money. Rick Pollitt had better get our county on a diet and quick!

Shifting the burden of teachers unions.

Tell the governor and all the congress and senate to pay 50% of their retirement, health care and they would save a lot of tax payers money.

What a clever ploy! Since the state hasn't been able to get its fiscal house in order, just shift some costs to the counties, most of which, like ours, have their own financial problems. Since the counties cannot pass these costs on, they're stuck. This idea of passing teachers' pension costs has been bandied about for a good number of years now, it should not come as a surprise. As always, the teachers union will vigorously oppose it; they have so far been successful, but their success may have run out.

All I've ever heard is the word"Teachers".Is there a double standard where college professors in the state system are concerned?

Not that the taxpayers of Wicomico County will have to foot the bill for teachers pensions, we should have a say in the kind of retirement program we are being told to support.

I for one will only support the same programs we in the private sector have, 401k plans. If we do this it will stop the bloated pensions and limit the taxpayers cost to the employers contribution percentage. This philosophy of pensions for life on the backs of the taxpayer has to go away. We can't sustain them.

taxation without representation!

Passing the anti-buck

Every few years it seems we go through something similar. The Fed cuts the states, then the states cut or under fund local government and it gets to be a VICIOUS cycle.

Wicomico's finance director - Mackel - can only do so much with what he has to work with - and I can guarantee you that with numbers like these - there is no way he can maintain a balanced budget or give guidance on how to proceed with anything.

It just never seems to end. First it was my license plate renewals, then it was the flush tax, then it was the tax assessment office - and now this. I wish the legislature would be disbanded entirely.
