Area Plant Closings - Wicomico, Worcester, Somerset, and Dorchester Counties - Part II
Wicomico County has been hit tremendously hard by this recession. In fact, Wicomico County - (8.3%) - has the highest unemployment rate with exception only to Worcester, Dorchester, and Baltimore City - (Maryland Unemployment Statistics). We can document that our area has lost at least 8,605 jobs during the past decade as witnessed by the above statistical job loss data sheets. This number is extremely conservative as the real unemployment numbers are probably double that figure.
Bottom line - our local income tax base has diminished by almost 7 million dollars - and lost state income tax revenues has lost $10.2 million dollars - annually. We are not making this stuff up folks - as the statistical data is accurate. Sure - we have picked up a few newcomers on the way - but by and large we have lost a lot more ground than we have gained.
So when someone asks you the question as to where all the money has gone - well now you know. When the jobs vanished so did the associated income tax revenue streams.

Sounds like its time to build a new middle school!
I mentioned the joblessness in the area to Mathias several times. His response? Nada. He has a job or 2 so I guess that the subject of job creation is not a major issue with him. Our local politicians are just as greedy and selfish as the rest of em. I bet you if he loses his State Senator position in 2014 it will be a major issue with him.
Who would want to work here? Gangs, Bad Schools, Goverment idiots, etc.
I swear I knew things were bad locally but I had no idea that we had lost this many jobs. I saw on MSN a few days ago about how Reading, PA has the worse economy in america - well maybe they should investigate our area.
Obama's version of Trickle up poverty is now gushing maybe he should switch to Reagan's trickle down economics.
At least we can say that our economy is consistant with the rest of the nation. According to O'Malley's press releases - everything is hunkie dory.
I have to admit that this is the best dang website in the entire country. That is even taking into account the EIB network - Rush Limbaugh.
Ref - 4:27 post
they tell it like it is. No sugar coating what is obvious to almost anyone who lives here.
and yet O'Malley wants to raise the sales tax to 7%, raise the gas tax, already raised alcohol tax, which yielded a net loss due to the freedom of movement (MD residents going to DE). They just don't get it! That's the most frustrating part! And the flipping Dems from Montgomery and PG voted this yahoo in! Oh! Did I mention shifting the costs of teacher's pensions to counties, increasing our taxes, reducing our tax deductions...
Are those NET losses or gross losses?
If NET, I would like to know the gross gains and gross losses.
Democrats really taxing the rich here. Can you feel it?
Notice the counties with the lowest unemployment are clustered around DC because of government employment. Oh, what happened to Prince Georges County? They are next to DC as well but still have a higher rate than the surrounding counties. Oh, that's right, now I remember who lives in PG County. Sometimes it's hard not to be prejudiced.
One does not get this caliber of coverage out of The Daily Times - former MSM. Keep-it-comin Joe.
and locally we buy a parking lot next to the civic center, tear it up,and wait for it........build a parking lot....its the dumb spending of money that i just dont understand as well...
