Poll: Blacks, Va. Conservatives Show support For 'Occupy'

WASHINGTON -- Regional support for the Occupy movement sweeping across the country is surprisingly high, particularly in conservative regions, according to a new WTOP poll, which paints a gloomy outlook for confidence and trust in elected officials throughout the highly educated area.

Roughly 96 percent of area residents know about the Occupy protests, according to the WTOP Beltway Poll conducted by Heart and Mind Strategies. In the weeks since it first began on New York's Wall Street, similar demonstrations have popped up across the country, including throughout Northwest D.C., pressing an anti-corporate greed and anti-war message.

The movement finds most of its local support from African American men (whose unemployment rate nation-wide is roughly twice that of whites) and those who say they are paying close attention to the protests (both at roughly 60 percent). About half of Democrats, moderates and liberals polled also support it.

Roughly a third of Washington metro residents follow the Occupy movement somewhat closely, with 27 percent following closely and 32 percent not following it.

"Blacks haven't been the smartest group out there"? Really??

Wow - you totally represent the racist tea party demographic. Congratulations on being an ignorant pig.

The story is that this keeps growing, and people of all walks of life are supportive. I work a full-time job, so I don't have the time to participate, but if I was unemployed (or under-employed), I would be there with them.

Republicans made the claim for trickle-down economics, and instead it's been a torrent of cash flowing uphill. The "tax cut" mentality has been proven to make things worse, so restoring some balance via the tax code is the best immediate solution.

The best way to restore economic order long-term is to restore the protective regulations instituted by FDR which served the country so well for 40 years (and rolled back by Republicans). This is the logical conclusion of these protests, whether they vocalize it or not.

What really surprises me is that MILLIONS of Americans have had their 401(k)'s reduced (by corporate theft) from hundreds of thousands of dollars to about $25. At the age of 70, they are looking for a job! They've watched the equity in their homes go into negative numbers because of deliberate financial manipulation by investment bankers and other corporate thieves. The same CEO's have convinced their friends (and former employees!) in the government to take even more money from the taxpayers to "bail them out" and then they gave themselves millions in bonuses. The same bankers are now foreclosing on the taxpayers and taking their homes. But, the protesters keep getting slandered because they are protesting corporate greed and control of our political system!? Have you people LOST YOUR MIND? You SHOULD be cheering them on, like the Marines who stood in their uniforms and challenged the police to fight THEM instead of beating unarmed and defenseless college girls and boys. Of course, cops DON'T attack people who will beat their ass. Wake up! The protesters are protesting for us and AGAINST the robbers and thieves who have cleaned our futures out.
