Jimmie Johnson To IndyCar: "No More Ovals"

(CBS/AP)

CONCORD, N.C. - Five-time defending NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson called on IndyCar to stop racing on ovals in the wake of Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon's death.

Wheldon was killed in a 15-car accident in Sunday's season finale IndyCar race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, a high banked, 1.5-mile oval.

"I wouldn't run them on ovals. There's just no need to," Johnson said Monday during a test session at Charlotte Motor Speedway. "Those cars are fantastic for street circuits, for road courses. I hate, hate, hate that this tragedy took place. But hopefully they can learn from it and make those cars safer on ovals somehow.

Could be the end of the famed Indianappolis 500.

I thought Indy was an oval. Indy cars race ovals; Formula cars do the road courses?

He meant ovals specifically designed for NASCAR, which are banked higher. Indy ovals (like Indianapolis) are designed for Indy cars, and those cars are less likely to go airborne.

225 mph is just nuts,
and then to be open wheel too

Am I the only 1 not saddened by a man dying who voluntarily entered into a dangerous profession to satisfy his personal needs? I'd rather read personal stories of the soldiers killed in battle.

Yea, 8:57 you are. Do soldiers not sign up knowing they have a possibility of dying as well?

I would put soldier under the "dangerous profession" label as well since it probably is the most dangerous profession in the world...

No you are not the only one. Sorry for the family of course, but I could care less. NASCAR is for people who never grow up.

And then you have the idiotic imatators on the public highways thinking they are race driver material. They are not.

NASCAR could be gone tomorrow and I wouldn't notice.
