Federal Board Urges Cell Phone Ban For Commercial Truckers

Washington (CNN) -- In an action that could affect millions of truckers, the National Transportation Safety Board on Tuesday recommended that commercial drivers be prohibited from using both hand-held and hands-free mobile phones while driving on the job.
The recommendation is the most far-reaching yet by the safety board, which has previously recommended that young drivers and bus drivers be prohibited from using cell phones while at the wheel. The new recommendation calls for a ban on all cell phone use by people holding commercial driver's licenses while operating their vehicles, except in emergencies.

Mexican truckers will always be able to use their cell phones, hell they do not have to abide by D.O.T.rules.

This is a crock. What about radios? Even the bus system in Ocean City has their drivers constantly taking one hand off the wheel to talk to some administrative idiot about some nonsense. I was on their bus recently and a supervisor was scolding the driver about eating his lunch. Maybe this is why OC got rid of their City Manager. Pure nonsense!

This is to try and stop the truckers from calling in to conservative talk radio

This is about revenue. I started trucking when there weren't cell phones. Having to stop constantly to check in with dispatchers, brokers, and getting directions was a royal pain. Cell phone have become a valuable tool to save time and money. Law enforcement can't hide from a phone call that warns about speed traps and truck inspection stations. If this goes through, ask the law abiding cops to leave their laptops at home instead of surfing the web while driving down the road. Let the companies that own the trucks regulate the phone use.
