The Electoral College could be inching closer to extermination as California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill Monday that would award the state's 55 electoral votes to the presidential candidate who wins the national popular vote.
The bill would take effect only if the states that hold a majority of the 538 electoral votes approve similar legislation. With California's addition, that total now stands at 132, almost 49 percent of the 270 needed.
Under the electoral college, people don't actually vote for president. They vote for electors, who then vote for president. It was developed as a compromise between those who wanted Congress to elect the president and those who wanted the president elected by popular vote.

This law negates the will of a state's voters. It should be unconstitutional.
we should outlaw voters too. who needs em when all these elections are rigged anyway?
We need to get rid of it and then our vote would really count, as it is, your vote don't count it goes towards your state being deligated to an elector for the college.
the constitution created the electoral college to prevent mob rule. we live in a representative republic, not in a democracy. each state no matter how big gets a voice. this is just another attempt to destroy our constitution. wake up people
Mob rule??? Naahhhhh, don't want THAT. We much prefer to have special interest/corporate giant rule....
This is one of those "Be careful what you wish for" things. Large cities, with a heavily Democratic electorate, will in effect elect the President.

it is the special interests that want to destroy the electoral college and the constitution so they can manipulate the mob rule. it is the electoral college that prevents cities (ie heavily blue areas) from dictating to the rural areas (ie midwest). it was our founding fathers who were trying to protect us from the special interests you talk about. wake up and stop listening to these very special interests you claim to hate.
I try not to hate anyone (well, maybe authority figures...lol) and I can assure you, I don't "listen" (as in "follow like a lap dog") to ANYONE. I'm just not sure that heavily blue areas would be able to dominate an election. Within those "blue " areas, there are still PLENTY of "red" (??) voters. The Law of Unintended Consequences may come into play here...
It will make it easier for groups like ACORN to cover their trail when committing voter fraud.
Witness the stupidity of the popular vote & you'll support the electorate.
