Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Fredericksen announced Sunday that Wicomico County Public Schools will open on time and as scheduled on Monday, Aug. 29.
Reminder of the schedule for the opening of the 2011-12 school year:
The new school year will begin Monday, Aug. 29 for most Wicomico students. Students in grades 1-6 and 9 will attend that day, with students in prekindergarten and kindergarten reporting as scheduled by their assigned school. (Exceptions to the above: At Pittsville Elementary and Middle, all grades attend. At Mardela Middle and High, only grade 6 attends on Aug. 29.) Please note that many schools have new start and end times, listed below.

Go figure, power still out in neighborhoods yet our wonderful school board has to meet the quota of back to school
Oh, dear Jesus. Are you one of the people complaining last year when they didn't open the schools fast enough after a snowstorm? Face it, it doesn't matter what the superintendant does, it is not going to suit everyone. If you can't get your kids ready, don't send them.

I actually agree with 7:54...there are still families without power, many who are still cleaning up after Irene, and many who have to get settled back in after being evacuated. Add to that getting kids ready to go back to school, packing lunches, etc. and it's a bit overwhelming. Not impossible, but difficult for many. It just makes this BOE look a little inconsiderate.
Ok! Why would they open school today? Yeah, yeah we know we can't do nothing about it,but why sit there and waiste your time trying to make stupid comments on how other people are affected by this. Some people don't have electric or water or even a home to live in at this point! This isn't the early 1700's where america took spit baths or carried a candel with them every where they go. Face it kids are lazy so why would they want to do that. Some people just aren't fortunate as others.
While there are indeed a few who still have no power and/or are enduring other effects of the storm, should the entire school system be shut down? If a few kids need to be absent, so be it; they will be excused, I'm sure. If we closed the system down everytime a few people were having a problem, schools would never be open.
6:50, maybe you could accompany your child to school and take an English class.
