I wish we had a day to finish the Irene clean up before school starts.
This is unfortunate. There are places in the county where the roads still have trees across them! Not to mention--teachers had to leave early on Friday and put a lot of their materials away in case of storm damage. An hour or two delay in the morning would be perfect to allow teachers prep time to get rooms back together and have top notch instruction ready for the kids.

Schools had to unplug every computer and other equipment before leaving Friday. If everyone does nothing more than is required, as the central office does, how can equipment be ready when the children arrive? Because teachers and principals will come early and get it done and receive no comp. time, extra pay or even a thank you from the Board.
stupid! there are still some without power, trees in roadways and they cancelled the open houses on friday when there was not a single rain drop! Most counties on the eastern shore will be closed tomorrow. It is that big of a deal to delay school for 1 day? I want my child back in school more than anything, but safety first!

I cannot believe some are SO CONDITIONAL that they are complaining they don't get paid enough to show up for work EARLY and provide for the children they so swear they do it all for.
You know something biotches, I run a blog 16 to 18 hours a day, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK and I get paid NOTHING! I do it because it's the right thing to do and I give back to my community. You don't hear me bitching and complaining all the time I can't get away.
Do your job and thank each and every one of us for paying our freakin taxes so you may stay employed. Then shut up!
Joe--we do work very hard to provide a good education for the students. We wouldn't do it if we didn't. However, we don't work for the money so why do taxpayers bring that up all the time?
We simply would like people understand how much time it does take to get the room ready and prepped for students on the first day.
How is it fair for families to worry about the first day of school when many lost power or have damage to their property?

BULLSH!T...Drive around the roads that are blocked if they haven't been cleared already! This is obviously one of the liberal teachers that wants a free day off. Aren't your 10 professional days and Summers off enough for you?
How about I open up a Post tomorrow asking people to explain their hardships in their daily lives and what they sacrifice every day while thanking God for the job that they have to survive.
Hell, I'd even guess some might be selling their own bodies on the side to put food on the table.
I think it would wake up each and every teacher that wants to cry the blues, (because they've all be taught they work too hard) by liberals and deserve more.
I'm not one of those people that will stand for a single second of that BS! Its a job. Its money in your pocket, It pays your billd and if you don't like your job, QUIT and get into another profession in the REAL WORLD where you don't have millions of wet pants liberals trying to save your a$$ to get more money out of the taxpayers.
An education is bullsh!t in this economy. America is NOT anywhere close to the education level of other countries, NOT EVEN CLOSE. So the patting on the backs for teachers is again, BS!
You haven't done sh!t for my kids or my grandchildren. In my opinion, you're a day care center that drills certain information into the brains of young children. Nothing more than survival crap, adding and subtracting. Mind you, don't think I don't realize there are some that excell in puiblic school but the majority are juust there because the law says they have to.
Pretty amazing how someone in my position would make such a statement, eh. I tell it like it is. Teachers are a bunch of crybaby liberals who walways want a pat on the back because we do so much for your children. BS, you do it for a paycheck because most of you aren't capable of surviving in the REAL WORLD. There are some I tip my hat off to but believe me, most are in it for the security, like politicians.
Joe - I guess Doctors should be happy they have jobs and come in and work extra hours for no comp since they take a Hippocratic Oath and are all about the patient. Yeah right, they get compensated very well for their efforts. We all do it for the money or we wouldn't work. Fact is even teachers suffered some sort of hardship in this storm, whether it is a power outage or property damage it's still real and it did just happen. Lighten up a little brother.

wow--joe, i will not be reading your blog anymore...you are clearly one of the reasons public education is suffering--because people view us as a daycare and don't support us--which makes it hard to do our job
For 31 years I taught school in Wicomico County. I gave my all for the students. I taught lawyers, doctors, politicians,people from all walks of life. I stayed many hours after school without extra pay to help the students with their academics as well as their growth as young citizens. As were many of my fellow teachers then and are today, I was NOT a liberal and, in fact, I was a conservative Republican. Ronald Reagan was and still is my hero. While I resent the "slackers" in the teaching profession (there are always some bad apples in any workplace), I also am sick and tired of others always putting the profession down based on just a few of the outspoken whiners.The majority of the teachers are hard working and dedicated to the students that they teach.
You do this blog because you love the attention and the power. Your blog does offer some good things as well. I'm a teacher and I read your blog often. I also tire of the, "It's for the children," song and dance from critics and supporters. I am in it for the money, to build a career, and one day retire and enjoy life. I also take pride in doing a good job and work long hours during the school year in order to do my job well. It takes many hours of prep to be a great teacher. If I take pride and work diligently, then the students will benefit from my hard work. I too would appreciate some time to get prepared for the first day of school this week. Sure we spent a lot of time last week and our own time beforehand getting things ready. However, the last three days we spent worrying about life and property. Also, before we left school early on Friday, we had to move all books, papers, and electronic equipment to a safe place. Now we must go in tomorrow and try to get everything back together in the few minutes we have before the students arrive. Once students enter the room, you don't get a break, all your attention is on the students and teaching. I don't even get a bathroom break until lunch. So, I don't feel I will prepared to do the best job possible tomorrow. I would rather have the students stay home tomorrow, but have the teachers come in to get their rooms and materials ready to start the year on the right foot. The first day of school sets the tone for the year. I'm not looking for a day off. I'm looking to be prepared to start the school year off the right way with my students.

As for the other comment about Doctors making so much money, it's crap. Granted, many do but MOST do not. By the time they're done paying off 30 years worth of loans, divorcing very expensive es wives who can't understand why they work 20 hours a day and then dump them once their carreer gets rolling so they can collect the big payday, Doctors really don't make Jack.
Like I said, there are some very excelent teachers out there but MOST areslackers and whiners. They are in it because they can't get fired. More importantly, because they can't get hired elsewhere. A LOT like government workers in DC.

What doctors are you encountering? Most of them are not even from this country and go to medical school thanks to our tax dollars. Just visit PRMC. It's nothing but doctors from India and Pakistan. You can't understand anything they even say and you can bet they aren't paying back 30 year loans. They don't get divorced so how are they paying alimony?
6:39,thank you! I could have written what you did, substituting Somerset for Wicomico. I also taught 31 years. I cannot believe the drivel I'm reading aboud educators. 6:37--That's a foolish statement, though, of course, I've heard it said often. I would invite any of you to spend a day in the classroom and then still think it's a piece of cake.
I can understand the teachers' concerns about going back to school tomorrow. No, they don't want another day of vacation. As I understand it, teachers were told to pack everything up as if it were the last day in June. When they return in August the week before the students do, they have time to unpack and get ready for school. So tomorrow they will arrive with everything packed away. They can function, for sure, but certainly not at their optimum.
Joe, I'm disappointed that you feel that way about teachers. You are a well-known voice in the community; you could have a very positive impact on the whole educational experience. And what happened to your "rules" some months ago about the language, both what you used and what you are allowing to be used.
I am happy that the Bd of Ed did not cancel school "in anticipation" of a major weather event, like last year. Face it-we made out VERY well with this hurricane. My kids are excited to start school tomorrow, and I am glad that is happening. We need to look at the big picture-and not the political side of al of this.
I posted a similar comment on another post regarding schools opening on time. It doesn't matter what the decision is, there will be people that complain. Dr. Fredricksen waited an extra day after a snowstorm one time, you people complained. The next time, you though he made the decision to open too soon. Are you people not happy unless you have something to gripe about?
I don't know what the teachers were told, but I find it very hard to believe you were instructed to "pack like it was your last day in June". How long does it take to plug in your computers? So, what, you have to go in an hour early. It will wash the next time you get to go in an hour late due to fog. You complain you don't get paid comp, but I didn't hear you mention that they dock your pay when that happens.
Know what? I work at the BOE and I am a usually VERY adamant that teachers work harder (and more) than what people give them credit for, but come on...

One day just ask your wife to pack away everything in the kitchen and dining room as if she was going to be moving. The next morning early, tell her 25 people will be coming for breakfast and will be expecting her to spend the rest of the day working for them. She should feel totally prepared, I'm sure.

There's ALL those businesses with windows boarded up. Then there's ALL of those businesses with tape scattered all over their windows.
Do You have ANY clue why I call you people wet pants liberals! YOU and NOT the only important people in this world. My Wife will return to work tomorrow and have to rearrange the office with co workers. DEAL WITH IT. By the way, they're NOT getting paid any additional money. They also have the same amount of clients who will walk in the door and expect service.
