Dow Jones Industrial Average posts modest 29-point gain to end eight-day slide. NASDAQ and S&P 500 also close higher.
The blue chips tacked on slight gains after a tumultuous session on Wednesday, capping an eight-day rout in which the Dow shed more than 850 points.
