Fredericksen Threatens Layoffs, Blames Council Members

Wicomico public schools Superintendent John Fredericksen doesn’t like certain members of the Wicomico County Council. That’s fine. I have a sneaking suspicion that some of them feel the same way about Fredericksen as I do – that he’s an arrogant spendthrift who believes that the taxpayers exist solely to fund his bureaucracy and his pet projects.
Regardless, I don’t hear members of the county council giving talks to groups attacking Fredericksen. If only Fredericksen was able to exhibit such self restraint.
Lately Fredericksen has been meeting with groups of WCBOE employees at various schools. The nominal reason for these meetings is to explain the budget cuts for the current fiscal year.
At some of these meetings he has made the statement, “If you’re laid off, you can blame the council”, or specifically council person X or Y. (The folks who have reported this to SBYNews have asked that specific council members not be named in case Fredericksen could figure out which meeting he mad a specific comment and then retaliate against specific individuals.)
I find this very interesting. Wicomico County Executive Rick Pollitt cut the BOE’s budget by $5 million. The council cut an additional $2 million (a cut I opposed). Yet, this is the fault of specific councilmembers?
No, I think this has more to do with Fredericksen being embarrassed because certain council members have dared to demand some accountability. Some council members have reminded Fredericksen that the dollars he spends come from the hard work of our citizens. And that is FAR more important than educating our children … at least to people like John Fredericksen.

who hired this guy?

They don't have to lay off. They could furlough or everyone take a small pay reduction in order to save jobs. Unfortunately, at the BOE it is the lowest paid employees who take the hit.

Why is the Board still paying to send teachers on a plane to conferences? AS recently as this week and Fredericksen is threatening layoffs and blaming Council members???

The supervisor of media, Lee Powell, has been assigned to Prince Street for this coming year to help get their scores up. Her salary for being at that one school remains the same. She was not going to be replaced. Yesterday Carla Lewis was named (no interviews, no job posting) as Supervisor of Media and Library Services. It's an increase in pay from her coordinator's job. So where did the money come from and why wasn't the job posted? Because rules don't apply, that's the reason.

Accountability? They don't know what that is.
When we used to budget , we had to have a methodology to our numbers for each cost center.
This way you had to explain each dollar or sum you were going to spend and why.
These idiots think they are way above the educated public.NOT!
We could not and did not use the prior years budget to go by.

After reading this post I researched county council minutes from the last 18 months. Other than the Bennett Middle Project and of course the budget problems we face I found nothing that revealed that this council or the prior council was not supportive of the BOE.

When Ms. Powell was the media supervisor this year, she also had to supervise teachers in several schools. The position named yesterday is media only. It's less to do for a supervisor's salary.

I believe someone should go over to Parkside High School and look at how they are spending money like none other.

They plowed under a perfectly manicured field and then sodded the whole soccer field. Don't take my word on it . . . go look for yourself. There was nothing wrong with the orginal field. Why did they waste so much money?

This blows my mind.

The Board is playing fast and loose with fair employment laws. The excuse so far has been that promoting a principal to a supervisor's job is a transfer because the pay is the same. A Pupil Personnel Worker became a supervisor, and just now a coordinator became a supervisor with neither job advertised although both were an increase in salary. They do as they please and will not provide a copy of the policy that allows this. Why? Because there is no such policy. Perhaps they are going to get a huge surprise in the near future.
