The Wicomico County Council is seeking residents who are interested in serving on a committee to review the County Charter for possible need of amendments to it. The current County Charter was adopted by voters in 2004. It includes a requirement that at least every ten years the County Council will appoint a Charter Review Committee “for the purpose of reviewing the Charter in full and submitting recommendations to the County Council.” (Section 1002-C)
Persons who volunteer to be considered for this important civic responsibility may expect the committee to conclude its work within 12 to 18 months of meeting monthly, or more often, at the discretion of the committee. The County Council intends to appoint committee members in August and the committee will begin its work in September, 2011. The time frame anticipated will enable the County Council to have sufficient opportunity to consider the Charter Review Committee’s recommendations, hold public meetings and to prepare language for any proposed charter amendments for placement on the ballot of the general election in 2014.
Candidates for appointment are asked to submit a letter of interest, with a brief statement about themselves, their background equipping them to undertake such a task, address and any other information persons may believe to be appropriate. Letters should be addressed to:
