Wicomico Council (District 2) – Stevie Prettyman

We were positively amazed that the Daily Times endorsed District 2 candidate Michael Calpino for Wicomico County Council.  While we believe that everyone has a right to their opinion, we believe that opinion should be an informed one.  Calpino is wholly unsuited for Wicomico County Council, or any other elected office.  To add insult to injury, the woman his is running against has been a leader in offering meaningful and visionary legislation.
The worse thing that can be said about incumbent District 2 councilwoman Stevie Prettyman is that she is an incumbent.  If you are highly partisan, you might hold the fact that she is a Republican against her.  However, she is one shining example that being an incumbent is not necessarily a bad thing.
Prettyman is one of only two members of the council to offer tax relief legislation during the last four years.  She has been a staunch advocate of fiscal restraint in tough economic times.  She fought hard, and successfully, to protect the property rights of farmers.  She almost single-handedly forced the Wicomico County Liquor Control Board to mend their thieving and profligate ways and return more funds to the taxpayers of Wicomico County.
Local government is “grunt work”.  You are paid very little to spend countless hours attempting to solve constituent problems AND point the county in the right direction.  The only job that is possibly more thankless is that of an elected school board member.  Because of our strong executive form of county government, there is very little that a councilmember may do other than nibble around the edges.  Yet, Prettyman has managed to help steer our county executive and our county government away from a path that would be fiscally and economically disastrous.  With stronger and more conservative support on council Prettyman and District 5 councilman Joe Holloway could accomplish a great deal of good for Wicomico citizens.
The thought of Calpino in office should frighten District 2 (and Wicomico County) voters.  You have to work with your colleagues to accomplish things.  Some people are simply not suited to such a task.  While Calpino can be charming, he is an ideologue of almost dangerous proportions.  Calpino’s claim to fame is making national (and international) news by hanging Rep. Frank Kratovil in effigy.  Is this what we wish Wicomico County to be known for.  We can assure you that IF he were elected, national and international media would again drag up this tale.  That would really help Wicomico County to attract new business to the area.
While we have many Libertarian and libertarian-leaning friends, Calpino’s form of libertarianism is of the more extreme variety.  We have witnessed him argue for the abolition of Social Security and Medicare in public fora.  While we can understand the argument on a theoretical level and grant that a councilman would have no say over the matter, this is but one indication of the type of irresponsible ideas Calpino would bring to our county council.
Stevie Prettyman has earned another term in office.  She has earned our support because of her hard work over twelve years on council.  She has earned our support because of her willingness to stand up for her constituents and our county.  She has earned our support because of her accomplishments as a councilwoman.  In addition, District 2 voters should run, not walk, to the polls and vote for Stevie Prettyman because the alternative is frightening and could cause harm to our attempts to rebuild our local economy and our community.

Way to go SBYNEWS. The Daily Times should be boycotted to have endorsed someone like Calpino for this seat. Stevie has represented her district well for 12 years and will continue to. Go Stevie!

Great post Joe. Why would anyone consider voting for the whack jobs that won't play well with others and will only cause chaos.

We've had enough of that! We need smart, thoughtful people who KNOW HOW TO WORK WELL WITH OTHERS if we are going to get out of this mess.

We need less rants from left and right wings and more focus on working together to solve problems - REALLY - not just political talk in ads - but the genuine thing!

Joe,
You got that one right on the money. How the DT would endorse a candidate who has already proven himself to be an embarrassment to the whole county is a big mystery, compared to an honorable candidate with a proven track record. Stevie was the only member of the county council who voted against the budget the year the tax rate went up so much the voters fought back with the revenue cap. The difference between the two candidates is like the difference between chicken feathers and chicken salad. Stevie Prettyman is a hard working public servant in the truest sense. The county has been fortunate to have her on the county council and District 2 could not have a better representative.

I didn't see the endorsement but I can tell you Stevie is a common face in our community. She is always willing to lend of her time for a great cause. I remember when she put a team together for a race to benefit the Joseph House. I see her at community functions, not just to be there but to be there working for them. And I watch her on Pac 14--she brings a lot the table in a professional way and has put up with a lot of crap from some on the council. She not only has my vote, but also my wife & daughter & her husband.

Let me also add we need a candidate that is well informed about the district they want to represent. At a youth soccer game involving youth from the one high school Mr. Calpino wants to represent, his wife was very negative toward the kids. If anything she should have been neutral and only spoke in positive tones and with positive comments to ALL the kids. I was very amazed Mr. Calpino stood there listening to her and the only thing he did was laugh. Did he not realize he had over 50 votes sitting there listening to those comments from parents that live in the district he is running for?!?!? If he is not brave enough to advise his wife of the political suicide she caused that day, then I see him as not brave enough to be of any help while on the council. After a number of the parents got together after that game, we decided if his family was going to make a mockery of the kids in the high school he wants to represent then there will be no backing of that school by Mr. Calpino if he is elected to office. I am not a person that has voted for Mrs. Prettyman before but if Mr. Calpino is going to bring with him comments like I heard about children that day....I am pulling the lever for Prettyman. Mrs. Calpino must have took a page out of Billy Carter's (President Jimmy Carter's brother) book of "How to embarrass your relative in politics."

Must run in the family. At the Farm and Home Show Buffalo chip toss, Calpino's family sat in the bleachers booing Prettyman. I'm not a freind of Prettyman's but I wouldn't vote for Calpino if he were the only name on the ballot. It set a terrible example for the youngsters watching. So there you go, GO Prettyman.
