Dem Ads against GOP Not Accurate On FairTax Proposal

Democrat lawmakers struggling to find support from a skeptical electorate are using a Republican tactic to win votes by claiming their opponents will raise taxes if elected into office.

Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) is just one of several Democrat candidates saying the FairTax -- a levy that replaces the federal income tax with a 23 percent sales tax on everything, including the purchase of a new home or car – is backed by Republicans and will bust family budgets if enacted into law.

Research supplied by FairTax.org shows that Democrats in 16 districts have run at least 31 ads blasting Republicans for supporting the tax. But many of these ads neglect to mention the levy is essentially a national sales tax that would replace the current federal tax system.

FactCheck.org recently slammed the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) for running ads that omitted this fact.

“Democrats are accusing Republicans of supporting a 23 percent sales tax on everything, which would be on top of all existing taxes… it’s misrepresenting by omission of the FairTax idea,” FactCheck.org director Brooks Jackson told The Hill.

“It’s very deceptive,” Philip Hinson, national spokesman for FairTax.org, said of the ad.

“It just speaks to the desperation of the Democratic Party because they see an absolute tsunami developing and they can’t come up with anything better than this,” he added.

The FairTax replaces income and payroll taxes with a national sales tax that would likely be collected at the state level. It also provides a rebate for incomes that are below the poverty line.

If they want people to stop buying - enact this little proposal. People will stop buying immediately. Especially big ticket items, like and cars.
I can't think of any better way to put the car dealers and the realtors out of business, in a hurry!
While I think we definitely should have a much simpler and more fair tax system, I don't believe this is the way to do it!

Why just a story on Dem mischarecterization. Almost any and every attack ad, no matter which party sponsors it, grossly mischarecterizes and outright lies about an opponent's position. It's despicable. But unfortunately the right are masters at this game plan and the blind idealogues soak all the misinformation up as fact.

the fair tax as its called is already in use. i beleive both florida and texas use a state sales tax in place of income tax

if it works for them, it can work for the country

think about it, you will get all of your paycheck. thats much more then the sales tax they want to use.
well for some of us it is

Ok, so the average median income is lets say 50,000. You'll spend at the very least 80% of this on purchases = 40,000. At 23% tax you would pay $9200 in taxes that year or 18.4% of your income. This is higher than the current 15% tax bracket that you fell in prior to changing over to the "fair tax". But I thought Rep. were all about lowering taxes?

Not bashing republicans, but see how plans DON'T work out as intended when you oversimplify for the sake of appeasing the base.

2:30 - You're not quite accurate.
I live in Delaware so on MOST things I buy, I pay NO sales tax.
That would change - BIG time.

One more thing - if it wasn't going to make MORE money for the government - they wouldn't even be talking about it. - Wake up!

More money for the government for what - so they can give more to those on welfare who don't deserve it and are still on it because they know how to "work" the system?
You betya! It's not going to help the "working class" one ioda!

Some of you need to study your history of economics in this country. Once you do, you'll realize that the Republican Party has never been about lower taxes for the working class (used to be the middle class which has now become the lower class) CITIZENS - they are only about lower taxes for the corporations and the wealthy!

based on the prior post

you did not mention that there is a prebate. So lets say that the above is a a family of for each month that family will receive a monthly prebate of $559.00 for a total of $6708 per year. Subtract that from the $9200 would leave the family paying $2492 in taxes which is a 5% tax rate. Please go to fairtax.org and read about the fairtax.
