RE: "Dems hope to reclaim District 38," Aug. 22

A recent article that appeared in The Daily Times covering the District 38 Maryland Senate race between Michael James and Jim Mathias was unbalanced and, I believe, a disservice to readers unfamiliar with the candidates.

The article outlined and highlighted the image Delegate Mathias desires to obtain during election time, but excluded information on his repeated votes for Gov. Martin O'Malley's budgets, which included increases in the state income tax and increases in the state corporate tax as which did disproportionate harm to the Shore.

The article also failed to note not only how little was accomplished by Mathias during his four years, but also that he was part of the Annapolis gang that was against farmers, watermen and small businessmen on the Lower Shore.

Fundraising is mentioned, but nothing about the advantage incumbents typically have. These omissions are noteworthy, given the fact that James has proved formidable and those who know and may like both men could easily view James as the stronger, more effective representative for our district.

James is a proven job creator who has been consistent with his fiscally conservative message. He has worked as hard as any candidate to deliver that message while meeting residents throughout the entire district.

James knows firsthand the importance of promoting policies that encourage long-term economic development on the Shore. This should have been part of the story. Balanced coverage of this race and others will be welcomed and possibly useful to readers in the future.

Could not agree with you more regarding the coverage (or lack thereof) by The Times regarding this very important race. Having met Michael James and his family, there is NO doubt in my mind as to who will be the better choice. Michael James is a man of integrity and, as you said, is very interested in the Eastern Shore and the importance of small business here. Jim Mathias is very charming, but so was Bill Clinton and other big spending Democrats we elected in the past!! Charming does not help the economy!

too bad none of what you said about Mathias is actually true.

I think voters should really give a lot of thought to this matter. Jim Mathias was a good mayor of OC, but I feel that's about as far as he should have ventured in politics.

Jim Mathias has the best interests of the Eastern Shore at heart. He has voted on issues that ARE NOT in keeping with the Democratic Party line when he felt that it was not beneficial to us. He is NOT a rubber stamp for the Dems...he is his own man.

We need more statesmanship and cooperation from someone like Jim than partisan politics which is what James represents. James has his eye on a bigger prize....he doesn't connect with the people in the same way Mathias does...and it is the people that need to be heard.

Anybody who would vote for the Democrat socialist party deserves the slavery they get !

Jim Mathias is a man of honesty and integrity,he works very diligently for his constituents, and has a proven record of conservatism. Jim is also a strong supporter of law enforcement, and as a small business owner, he works tirelessly to improve that climate here in Maryland. This Independent voter is for Mathias.

Mathias should keep his day job with "Royal Plus" because Mike James is going be our next State Senator.

Whenever I hear Jimbo speak he sounds like a snake oil salesman.

What's your evidence for "a man of honesty" and the other stuff in your comment?

Anonymous said...

12:07...what factual evidence can you offer that Mathias is not an honest man?

11:44,

do you even know his voting record. anyone who VOTES YES for higher taxes, business, residential or land taxes - IS OUT! Taxes is what is KILLING Maryland. And whether you believe it or not, its killing you, unless you do not work and do not pay taxes.

Its not taxes that made our housing values skyrocket artificially. Its not taxes that make the electric bill higher every year. Its not taxes that are to blame for any of our current economic crisis. Call me "socialist", but I rather like having roads to drive on, schools to send our kids to, funded police agencies, and all the other things we take for granted in daily life that are funded by taxes.

2:12...while I agree with you on taxes you cannot ignore the facts that:

1. The Maryland assembly deregulated electricity in maryland on the false promise that it would lower our costs...in fact they have doubled instead.

2. A significant share of blame for the housing crisis lies with congress and it's failure to properly oversee Fannie and Freddie coupled with it's pressure on lending institutions to make loans to unqualified borrowers for political reasons and for social engineering goals.

3.Congress has spent nearly a trillion dollars of money that we do not have with virtually no results.

4.The so called healthcare reform bill was not read by the vast majority of those who voted for it and the CBO scoring has now been revised....the so called "savings" for the American people will not be there.

So..we could have all the things you alluded to without the very poor decision making we see from politicians. People have every right to be angry. If you aren't I would suggest to you that you might not be paying close enough attention.
