EPA Now Accepting Public Comment on Petition To Ban Lead In Ammunition And Fishing Tackle

(CNSNews.com) – Environmental activists are pressing the Obama administration to ban the manufacture, processing and distribution lead shot, bullets, and fishing sinkers under the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976, but hunting and Second Amendment groups say the EPA lacks the authority to do so, for starters.

A petition submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency on Aug. 3 says ammunition and tackle manufacturers are now marketing a wide variety of non-lead, nontoxic bullets, shotgun pellets and fishing tackle, which can and should be used instead of lead projectiles and weights.

“There is no technological or commercial reason why nontoxic ammunition and fishing tackle with comparable effectiveness should not be substituted for their lead counterparts,” the petition says.

Petition signatories include the Center for Biological Diversity, American Bird Conservancy, Association of Avian Veterinarians, Project Gutpile, and Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility.

The environmental activist groups note that the EPA is specifically prohibited from regulating ammunition or firearms under the Toxic Substances Control Act. But, the groups argue, “toxic components of ammunition can be regulated if nontoxic alternatives are commercially available.”

my shotgun, Model 12, built some time in the 1920s can only shoot lead shot. steel shot destroys the weapon. this is not good for my weapon, i will not be able to use it, if i do use it, the steel shot will damage it.....

Maybe that is why they want to get rid of lead shot?

Its been illegal to hunt with lead shot in Maryland for years.

Only waterfowl 11:01. You must not be a hunter at all.

Wrong. Lead is the most common shot in all shotgun shells used for rabbit, squirrel, dove, deer slugs, and well I could go on. Non lead is only illegal for waterfowl.

And for the statement in the articles about "no technologically or commercial reason" is B.S. Lead substitute shells were $5.00 each last time I bought some.

Think about how many shells you shoot per dove! Now there's a commercial reason not to outlaw lead!

Is there any EPA report showing a significant impact on environmental lead from bullets and tackle?

we have LEAD in our bodies?

EPA (enviro-weanies) are a bunch of religious nut jobs with Government backing (mother earth is their religion/humanism - they are god - its a combo religion IMO)

We use approx. 300 million pounds of lead per year to make car batteries but the EPA doesn't give a rats butt about that. Wake up people, this is about making the cost and supply of ammunition out of reach for the average gun owner and severely restrict recreational fishing. Some of the responses here are frightening for a rural hunting and fishing area --can't you see what the deal is here people?

Amen 4:20! This is just another attempt to remove the ability to protect yourself, your loved ones and your property. If they can't take away the right to bear arms they will cut the ability to use your weapons by restricting ammunition. I have been reloading shotgun shells for years and it is now time to purchase a reloading equip. for rifle/handgun ammo.
