Rehoboth Residents Soon To Learn From Salisbury Politics

Two Red Light Cameras were installed on Coastal Hwy near Rehoboth Beach, DE a few weeks ago. What makes it so bad is that the Red Light cameras are installed at back-to-back intersections -(Coastal Hwy & Munchy Branch Road and Coastal Hwy & Old Landing Road).

Today I just returned from Rehoboth and decided to avoid the 'traps' by navigating the 'back-way' in - a trick I learned in Salisbury. It was interesting to note that the Route along Airport Road was bumper-to-bumper through the residential neighborhood which is considered to be the 'back way' into Rehoboth Beach. I've navigated this roadway before and have never witnessed the volume of traffic that I experienced today.

Maybe Delaware officials should have consulted with Salisbury's politicos before they decided to deploy these expensive contraptions. I've been told that the offense carries a penalty of $112.00 which is not cheap especially in light of the current recession. And as soon as word reaches the street to organizations like the - Cruisers and Motor Bikers - I'm sure that Rehoboth officials will in the end wish they had never deployed these devices.

Or people could just follow traffic laws - novel concept I know, but still many of us do so and don't feel the need to avoid red light cameras.

How about those vacationers that are being taunted by these devices.

I also visited Rehoboth Beach a few weeks ago and was amazed that they had installed the cameras at each consecutive intersections.

Talk about a resort deterent - where in the heck was the Chamber of Commerce.

Sometimes, especially when you have a high incident of crashes, you have to think outside the box. I am sure that crash data had indicated a crash experience related to failure to obey a traffic control device or something similar. They wouldn't have wasted the time and money otherwise. The police can't be everywhere. I personally would rather have them out looking for the bad guys. If there is technology available to catch red light runners, and speeders, I say great. I think you will find the only complainers are the law breakers. There are ways to deal with unintended consequences, such as cut through traffic, it's just a matter of "working out the kinks". If people would follow the rules, and stop putting other peoples lives in jeopardy, we would all be better off.

I'm a UPS driver and tried to get the Teamsters Union to fight them tooth & nail. What did they do, nothing.

You can bet your A- - that the company still wants you to make standards though.

That is what you get when you pay union dues.

You had better check your data. In DC they did an extensive study on Intersections equipped with Red Light Cameras.

Bottom line - they create more accidents. Don't take my word on it though-google it and find out for yourself. Salisbury did the right thing by removing those devices.

We had these things back in Tennessee. About 2 years they came out with a study. Side impacts have been reduced by 60%. But rear in impacts went up by 90%.

you don't know much about salisbury, do you?

the camera program didn't end because of cut through traffic

ended because Tilghman said they weren't making enough money to justify the cost

turns out they weren't sending out the bills

stop whining about big brother and do us all a favor by not running the red lights

If you get a ticket from a red light camera, have your lawyer subpeona the camera to court. You have the right to face your accuser.

Also determine the length of time the yellow light is on in seconds. If the worst braking car allowed on the roads by NHTSA can't stop in that amount of time while obeying the current speed limit, the site is setting up folks as a revenue source.

10:37, Salisbury didn't remove them because of rear end collisons. They removed them because they were successful and were not generating the revenue anymore. Also, rear end collisons are MUCH less severe than the typcial crash resulting from some bonehead trying to save 3 minutes and running the red.
6:59, there are not vehicles on the road that cannot stop for the yellow interval. It just simply isn't so. Nice try though. If your vehicle can't, then you are driving a vehicle with mechanical problems. Yellow intervals are set based on the speed of the road and the sight stopping distance. If you can't stop, it means you were going too fast. Maybe they should add photo radar as well to these intersections.
