Salisbury Zoo

I went to the zoo today for the first time, not in my life, but in a long time.

The conditions some of those animals are in are deplorable....some of them looked so sad and lonely.

They don't look uncared for...just lonely...some of them are just all alone and have no company of other animals...

Some were fine, but when monkeys look sad and bored...something is seriously wrong...and there werer three of them.

The bear is just pathetic with just a (ish) 5 x 10 place to pace. Evidently the jaguar does nothing but sleep and some of those animals look like they would be better off put to sleep.

Hurt my feelings something awful...is there anything we can do ( yes I said we, as in a community...)

I really think you should join the bear in his cage and entertain him. Dolt.

THEY ARE IN A ZOO !!!! My heart bleeds that you think they "look sad and bored". Come on, they are monkeys with a debatable ability to express sadness. Maybe they were constipated from the square meals that the evil zoo is feeding them. Either way, would you be happy in a cage? How do you expect an animal to look while in a cage?

Here's a solution. Get Obama to regulate zoos to force at least a 6x11 cage for all bears in captivity. Just tax the rich, they owe it to the bears to pay "their fair share".

Does it surprise anyone that animals are not "happy" in captivity?

I felt the same way. When I went there last week it was nothing but trash in almost every cage with these animals. Isn't that dangerous? And if makes our Zoo look dirty..

Classic case of putting human emotions onto animals, who are, well, not human. "Because their faces look a certain way, they are feeling like I feel when I look that way."
People like this usually have small annoying dogs.

Good Grief.......if you knew anything about animals at all you would begin to understand what you saw. Depending on when you were there they all could have been resting from just being fed. Monkeys don't jump and play non-stop. They do take breaks. The bear has an outdoor enclosure as well, he just chooses not to use it sometimes. The jaguar is, get this, a nocturnal animal who sleeps all day and is active at night. Take some time to learn about these animals and their behavior and you will not only understand, but appreciate them much more. It would also help if you quit anthropomorphizing as well!

I sit in a cage everyday for 8 to 12 hours. If I make a sad face will you get me a bigger cage? I don’t think anyone/animal should have to endure, but hey this is life. It sucks and then you die.

My daughter and i would love to help in our free time and i agree that the cages must be made larger.Let me know if there are any times that we could help.

i guess i must have been in a different zoo with my grandkids last saturday, all the animals seemed fine to me and the chldren had a great time, most of you albero fans just find anything at all you can criticize here in salisbury, just like your hero, look if you don't like it here then go the hell back to where you came from.we were doing fine before he ever started this blog and will be fine long after he leaves.

WOW... such hate. I am not a huge fan of Joe's but I agree the animals need better and larger enclosures. The wolves look great in their en but the bald eagle is horiffic and I agree the jaguar and the bear need MUCH more.
And 12:35, a couple distinctions... if you get up to leave your "cage" nobody will shoot you. AND.. you get paid. Some people....

Okay, this is how I saw it last week and I am an animal lover and owner. I took my 2 grandsons who were here for a visit. We had not been for 2 years as the last time I went, I was writing that nasty letter on this blog. I swore i would not go back, but I did. I found that several of the little ponds had been cleaned and looked okay. The flamingos do need more space and they were lovely. Some teenagers were chasing the geese and i was just waiting for the geese to retaliate, but they did not. The last time I went kids were riding bikes... none of that this time. For what the Zoo has had to cope with this winter along with the rain, I think it is remarkable what kind of condition it was in. They were cutting down some dead trees and really working hard. I too am their worst critic, but at this time, things seem a bit improved.

If you think the zoo is filthy check out Bens Red Swings...people have absolutely no respect for that property and as a result,on every trip there with my kid I have had to pick up dirty diapers, food and drink containers, etc. And the adults smoke there anyway despite the signs telling them NOT to.Its a nice play area that is a tribute to a beautiful little angel and people just use it as a dump-sickening

Sorry folks, but I don't frequent the zoo. My reason for not going there with my family is the human trash that accumulates there. Simply, the entire ghetto hangs out there and each of the times I visited with my wife and young children, there were a wide vareity of 'animals' there that frequently used coarse language, acted as the social misfits that they are, and genreally made the whole place unfit for decent folks to attend. Last weekend was the last time we will ever go. I keep hoping that I'm catching the place on a bad night, but I personally observed adults with children, drinking in the parking lot as their children ran wild, my wife observed what she was pretty sure was a drug deal take place (again, right there in the parking lot in front of everyone in broad daylight), and we stopped counting the number of unattended chidren (most were around 10 or 11 years old I'd guess)running rampant, cell phones in hand, acting like total lunatics! In my opinion, the place is routinely unsafe, and not a place to take children to experience wildlife. Truthfully, given what they have to work with, the zoo isn't too bad for a small one. To address the mess, here is a thought - start charging a nominal fee (say $5.00 a head regardless of age) and see how fast the place gets cleaned up in many ways. First, the ghetto trash will not come for something they have to pay for, and second, the funds can be kept to enhance and work on the place. Maybe then we will return, but in the meantime we will stay away from the place, and while I'm on my kick, the local mall as well - that place is just over run with trash, and is even more dangerous!

3:48 your assessment is correct. The Zoo isnt bad, the ppl that "hang out" in the park is where the problem lies. My wife and I used to frequent the park about once a week. One visit turned into 3 adolescent teens harassing us. We were there for a walk and end up being harassed by these punk a$$ kids. I lived outside a huge metro area for years and never had this happen. I move here and within 1 yr my car is vandalized and I get verbally harassed at the "city" park. Anyone who thinks this area is some kind of utopia is an ignorant individual. Low income has a strangle-hold on this area and has for years. Yes, I dont like the "way of life" here, mostly because nothing here ever improves. Crime is always been high and what has been done, nothing.
