FIRST LADY KATIE O’MALLEY TO OPEN THIS YEAR’S “GROW IT EAT IT” GARDEN

FIRST LADY KATIE O’MALLEY TO OPEN THIS YEAR’S “GROW IT EAT IT” GARDEN; ANNOUNCE NEW GARDENING LECTURE SERIES AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE

ANNAPOLIS, MD
– First Lady Katie O’Malley will celebrate National Gardening Month and Maryland Grow it Eat it Month by planting a food garden at Government House for the second consecutive year. Master Gardeners and youth apprentice gardeners and their families from Kinder Farm Park in Anne Arundel County will join the First Lady to plant the garden and refreshments made with items from the garden will be served. First Lady O’Malley will also announce the first ever Master Gardener/Government House Gardening Lecture Series to teach more Marylanders how to create their own backyard garden and grow their own food. The lecture series begin in May and will be held once a month through October.

First Lady O’Malley is partnering with University of Maryland Extension’s Home and Garden Information Center and Master Gardeners to promote the “Grow It Eat It, campaign” which encourages Maryland families to improve health and save money by growing fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs using sustainable practices. The campaign hopes to encourage 1 million Marylanders to produce their own affordable, healthy food. More information on the campaign and the University of Maryland’s Master Gardener program can be found at www.growit.umd.edu.

Last year, Maryland became one of the first states, if not the first state in the nation, to have a backyard food garden at the Governor’s home. The vegetable garden sets a realistic example of what Maryland families can do in their own backyards.

The event will take place this SATURDAY, APRIL 17, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Government House in Annapolis. __________________________________________________________________________________

I am all about growing my own food. Anyone that knows me, knows we grow, can and freeze all the veggies and herbs we eat in our household and give much away to family and friends. This undertaking requires a lot of hard, dirty, sweaty work. How much does it cost the taxpayers for Mrs. O'Malley to maintain the backyard garden? I'm willing to bet she is not out there every morning pulling weeds, watering, pinching bugs, trellising beans, tying up tomatoes or anything else required to maintain a healthy garden. I will bet she isn't out shoveling, spreading or tilling composted manure into the earth either. So, who is maintaining this garden and how much does it cost the taxpayers for the maintenance?

I bet that this garden is bankrupting our future and our children will starve. It must be at least 98% of the state budget. When will the madness stop. I agree wholly and entirely with 9:42, when will someone look into the price of gardening in America and for the love of God think about the children for once. This is socialism!!!

Gardening is socialism? Wow, proves you just throw that label at everything.
