Thats a Pileated Woodpecker. They are North Americas largest woodpecker. They are a real treat to see. It appears that they are preparing a nesting cavity so you will be able to watch them raise their young. Cool!
I have one the peck on the side of my house early in the morning. My siding is oak grain. I went to the window to see what the drilling noise was and there we were eye to eye. Cocky looking thing.
its amazing what a little ol'bird can do! reminds me of one of my favorite cartoons that kids dont get to see anymore, Woody The Woodpecker I used to love that cartoon with Woody and that ol'Buzzard allways throwing watermelons at eachother and they allways seemed to wear one of them on thier head for a helmet lol! memories!
Um...thats a Pileated woodpecker. Had one in yard once. Very cool. I looked up Umsuquah Woodpecker...I couldn't find anything. If this a joke I'm missing it.
Joe, you sure you weren't behind the car with all the weed? First a drug bust, then "grass & weed" season now "knockers & peckers". You're too funny. :-)

Not a Pileated, its an Umsuquah Woodpecker, very distinctive pattern and very rare.

I think 12:32 PM is trying to be either funny or crude, you decide. It is in fact, a Pileated Woodpecker.

Joe, that is a very large pecker. May I add I like the shape of it's head.
12:50-
Neither funny nor crude, I really do have a woodpecker drilling on the outside of my siding. He has returned for four years now. We named him fonzy.
3:17 PM I meant the other 12:32 PM post right above yours. Did not realize there were two with the same time stamp. Sorry!
