Cohen to offer detailed plan on cutting fiscal 2011 deficit Monday
For the first time in history, City Hall laid off employees yesterday, cutting payroll expenses and putting scores of people out of work during the weakest economy since the Great Depression.
City Hall is trimming a total of 85 positions, 47 of which are filled. For 33 of them, March 31 will be their last day, while the remaining 14 will work until July 1, the start of the next fiscal year.
City officials have not yet revealed what these employees do - that detail will be explained at a City Council meeting Monday night - but they said the jobs come from all parts of city government and include union and contract employees alike.
"This is a very sad day for City of Annapolis family," Cohen said in a prepared statement. "Good people, many of whom have dedicated their careers to the city, have lost their job through no fault of their own.

It's sad when people lose their job, but these are government jobs-- and people must realize that it isn't a function of government to provide jobs.
Government entities should be actively trying to reduce their payroll, as it is one of the biggest costs to the taxpayers.
Create a business-friendly environment, and the businesses that will provide needed jobs will locate here.
Under the curent hostile environment, they'd be crazy to do so.
Need to revise headline to indicate which city is the subject of the story.
'Bout time government figures out a way to balance the budget besides piling on more taxes. There is an Eastern Shore County Exec who needs to learn this lesson.

These city workers that have been laid off can lay the blame at the feet of Mayor Ireton, this is his fault, all his fault. I can only hope that someone will run against him, oh and by the way, he will be at another photo opportunity this afternoon. I think a new garbage recycling station is being unveiled!

Same thing is happening to towns all over the eastern shore..And the worst of it is.Public Safety is gonna take the biggest hit.Doesnt really make much sense to me
Public WORKS has been taking the hit for a LONG time in many municipalities!
People complain this isn't fixed, that isn't fixed but they forget just WHO fixes that stuff don't they?
Oh, my. Even when I read the full article, they didn't bother to give that "Cohen" a first name or title. Is this Annapolis' mayor or manager or what?
At first I thought it meant Terry Cohen. She's the only Cohen I know of and I couldn't figure out why she would be preparing statements for Annapolis.

But you would probably complain if government didn't provide your roads, in town sewer system, water, etc...
While I agree with small government, the notion that people that work for local municipalities are disposable is misguided and ultimately ignorant.
