Redskins Have Complied With Rooney Rule, Clearing Path To Replace Jim Zorn

Coach Jim Zorn prepares for the final game of the regular season, the Washington Redskins have already cleared a major hurdle that would enable them to hire a new head coach. The team has complied with the NFL's Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior front-office positions, according to John Wooten, president of the group charged with monitoring diversity hiring in the league.

Rooney Rule

The Rooney Rule, established in 2003, requires National Football League teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operations opportunities. The rule is named for Dan Rooney, the owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the chairman of the league's diversity committee, and indirectly the Rooney family in general due to the team's long history of giving African Americans opportunities that most NFL teams at one point didn't give. It is often cited as an example of affirmative action.

What about getting a job on your own Merritt ?

That was a BS way of complying with the rule. They have no intention of giving this guy a chance at the job. As long as Snyder owns the team, they will never win. Also look for Snyder and Jerry Jones to cause a work stoppage in 2 years for the NFL. They don't like the revenue sharing with other owners and will be the cause of no labor agreement with the players. As a result, there will be no NFL in two seasons. Jones and Snyder want to like the Yankees and Red Sox of the NFL.

eventually, all given oppourtunity will be judged on their own merrit.but there certainly is not a problem with ethnic diversity among the team players.the management and money side IS a seperate issue.any player who gives himself to the love of the game ,and is accomplished will certainly be blessed in all of the spiritual and monetary parts of their life.PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS are often times the toughest,"dividing the passion",is probably most easily put. welcome to the NFL,go STEELERS !!!!

I'm by no means racist, but African American equality is beginning to go a little overboard-the Rooney Rule is complete BS to me! When you are looking for a coach what do you do? You hire the most experienced and most qualified person for the job-BLACK OR WHITE! Color shouldn't matter weather you're hiring a coach for a NFL team or hiring a drive-thru cashier at a McDonalds! You hire the person that is going to show up every day and do the job they are expected to do-PERIOD! There is plenty of diversity within the NFL today. Infact 65% of the NFL players are African American making Whites themselves a minority in the NFL. Does that suggest that we need to have a "Whitey Rule" and require that every team draft an equal number of Whites and African Americans in April? Why would I want a sluggish white wide receiver on my team when I can have the lightening speed of Devin Hester? Why would I want a less agile white runningback when I can get the mind boggling moves of Adrian Peterson? It is a time tested and proven fact that African American NFL players tend to have more atheletic ability than whites so why would teams draft a racially equal teams that are inferior? NFL teams are out there to win games, not to handicap themselves due to racial equality requirements. The same goes for coaching; NFL teams should hire the best coaches available regardless of color-if the best coach is White then hire him! Black? Then hire him! Female? Hire her too! You're looking for the BEST! I think that the rule should be that teams are required to interview all qualified candidates that APPLY, but not forced to specifically seek out African American candidates for the job. Provide applicant deadlines and interview all that apply. What happens when a minority doesn't apply for the coaching/management position, does the team still get fined for failure to comply with the Rooney Rule? This happened to the Lions when the minority candidate withdrew from the interview process.

There is also the simple fact that there are more (numerically) experienced white coaches available for coaching positions so by default you are going to have more white coaches. The are still black coaches that are going to go down in history; Tomlin and Dungy were Super Bowl Champion Coaches and while it is debateable that Tomlin was not hired as a result of the Rooney rule, they were both highly qualified for the position and did extremely well. Singletary has turned the 49ers' team around in less than 2 seasons and he wasn't hired as a result of the Rooney rule because he was previously an assistant coach for the 49ers.

Technically, the new requirements of the Rooney Rule would have required the Redskins to interview a minority candidate for the Redskins Executive Vice President of Football Operations, but that went down without a hitch. He IS the best man for that job, but why wasn't anything said regarding the Rooney Rule?

Like I stated earlier, I'm not racist by any means but I am a realist-you hire the best person for the job. Why hire somebody inferior just to fulfill a racial diversity requirement? If you're the right person for the job, you get the job-I don't care what color you are! If the new Redskins head coach was the best coach in the world, but happened to be Chinese, Ararbic or Vietnamese than I'd say let's play ball! Simply put Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan will be the best thing to happen to the Redskins since their last Super Bowl Championship in 1991! Now, all we need to do is get Snyder to sell out...

anon 9:50 AM,

I agree; however, with the way that Snyder is running the Skins into the ground he would be stupid not to support revenue sharing with other teams when he starts going broke himself! I know that my season ticket contract will be up after next season and I seriously doubt that I will be renewing unless Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan can turn things around next season! I'm not going to continue to go to games like the past two against the Cowboys and Giants and spend over $6,000/season on two seats! Not to mention with their new season ticket contracts they are increasing the cost 10% per seat each season during my contract when it used to be only 2%! That means if I spent $6,000/season initially on my two seats with a 5 year contract I would be paying %6,600 for the second season, $7,260 for the third season, $7,986 for the fourth season and $8,784 for the fifth season! I would see at least a $2,784 increase in cost for my season tickets! I could almost buy an extra seat at the initial price! It's complete BS! I'm not paying that much to go watch my team get murdered by more than 30 points or shut out! Snyder is too much of a business man-at least Jerry Jones makes money and a winning record! I remember when I first signed up for my season tickets, it took me over 4 years before they were available! My friend just signed up at the beginning of this season and got a call by week 8! Only Snyder can completely destoy a team with such loyal fans!

How do we get rid of Dan Snyder?

Basically it's affirmative action which to me says black people are not able to get a job on their own Merritt ! I think it's an insult to blacks ! it's outdated and insensitive !

Name Obama the coach and then just go ahead and award him the Superbowl trophy just like the Nobel peace prize !

who cares, the 4skins are losers, selfish overpaid crybabies, just like their owner! and if you are stupid enough to put your hard earned money into snyders pockets, then you have nothing to cry about. Hell they been losing ever since he took over the team. what did you expect a miracle?
shanahan, allen, just 2 more who are not gonna get the job done! keep it up snyder, now if we can just get Jerry Jones to follow your plan!

Exactly why I'll never darken the door of any pro franchise ever again.

Diversity Rule?

I guess just being qualified based on past performance isn't good enough.

you've got to be black to get the better jobs now.

It only says they have to interview. Here's what I do w/ my business, which has ALL white employees.

1st: When I get a phone call about a job, if they speak in Ebonics or have a black tone, I tell them we're not hiring.

2nd: If they submit an application, if the name sounds black or foreign, it gets filed in the trash can.

3rd: If they make it past this process and come in for an interview, they won't get the job solely based on their race.

I own a retail store on the Eastern Shore and I can tell you by going all-white, I have dropped my shrinkage (employee theft) by 92%.

All the whiners fail to recognize that #1, the rule says teams have to "interview", not hire, a minority coach. And #2, the reason for the rule is that there were talented minority coaches never even given the opportunity to show their skills because they weren't apart of the good ol' boy crew. All you who claim "reverse racism" here would rather erase that piece of [recent] history from your memory. Not to mention, the success of Dungy, Smith, and Tomlin show the worth in courting minority talent.
