Feds Consider New Prison Sites In MD. & NC

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (AP) - The Federal Bureau of Prisons is considering a new privately owned and operated facility on Maryland's Eastern Shore to keep up with demand for bed space.

Officials are looking at putting the facility for about 1,380 low-security prisoners from the Washington area in Princess Anne. The other site being considered is in Winton, N.C.

The proposed Princess Anne-area facility will be discussed at a series of public meetings this week, including Tuesday's meeting of the Somerset County Commissioners.

We don't need anymore DC thugs, relocated and transplanted in our area. They should build the prison accross the bridge and keep their criminals there.

Is this the best that Somerset county can do? First the commissioners wanted to accept trash from all over the east coast into the landfill. Now they want to house federal criminals in their county. Anyone that wants a correction officers job is allready working at ECI. That means all jobs would be filled by people from outside of this area. Some may think that is a good idea but frankly, I don't think we need more people moving into this area. Maybe there is one local looking for a job in a jail and that might be a certain former employee at the county detention center that was forced to resign due to wrongdoing.

Somerset County officials had better double check this.... in the mid 90' there was a group that wanted to build a BOP prison hospital in Worcester... The Concerned Citizens of Worcester County did some research and found out it was a scam. The BOP officially had no plans to build in Worcester. This group was after the county for free land and financial help to build the facility and almost got it before Concerned Citizens blew the whistle. I advise Somerset to do some research!!!

Privatly owned huh, that means they can call the shots, not the ELECTED local officals.

It's an economic stimulus. The drug market in D.C. is pretty crowded with dealers. Their relocation gives them access to a new market and the opportunity for more money into the local economy.

Research, Somerset County people, you better do alot of research.

Scary. That's all I can reallly say. Crime is up, gangs are everywhere, drug use is rampant, we don't need another prison here. The jobs would be good- I'm sure pay would be good, and so would the benefits, but we have enough thugs on the shore.

Elected Officials in Somerset County calling the shots?!. Thats funny. Why do you think Somerset County and both Towns in it are such a disgrace

This could be good for Somerset County. All the people who have their time in at ECI are now well-trained to work at a federal prison. They can take a full state retirement and then go to work for the federal system. This will increase the per capita income of one of the poorest counties in the State. We already have a prison and a population that knows how to work in them. Good for the county.

Will it have the release issues that ECI has? We need to be sure that we are not just bringing more criminals into our backyard~!

"Anyone that wants a corrections officer job is already working at ECI"

Really? The testing on Aug 28th at Wor-Wic had approx. 70 people. Only a handful will be interviewed, and then cuts will be made again for another interview. Considering there is testing every month with this kind of turn out, and hiring wont be done until the first of the year, I really dont think everyone that wants to be employed by ECI will have that opportunity.

The location across from ECI on Revells Neck has been looked at since the completion of ECI. It has been suggested another Male, Female and even Federal prison to be located there. There has been scale models constucted on the design / layout since 1988 in the Commissioners office in Baltimore and the Wardens office at ECI. That land has been surveyed on at least 3 occasions and several Fly over pictures taken of this area by different groups. So this is no surprise. This deal is probably in the last stages of negotiations since it is making news. It may be to late so take notice of activity in that area no matter how minor it appears. There has always been a rumor that Princess Anne is going to be another Jessup or Hagerstown every since the completion of ECI. The Democrats are destroying the Eastern Shore lifestyle just like the Federal government is destroying our rights as an American.
