A Letter To The Editor

Hi Joe!

I am a nursing student at Wor-Wic. I live with my brother on Civic Ave. After class, it's a late class, I usually sit on porch for awhile and read. I am usually outside anywhere from 10 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.The last couple weeks I have noticed several, or it even could be the same car, Salisbury Police cars traveling down my very short street at a high rate of speed. These cars never have any police indicator lights flashing and I have never seen them stop at the stop light at Civic Ave. and route 50. This light is almost always red because I get stuck at it almost every day. After reading so many horror stories on your site regarding fatal car accidents and pedestrian deaths, this concerns me. These police officers may very well be en route to a call, in which I would appreciate their hastiness, but if so, shouldn't they have their lights going as well? I have seen the car(s) go towards 50 and then come back in a matter of minutes, always at a high rate of speed. Any information on this would be great. If the cops are going to a call etc. it's one thing but speeding to speed is definitely a safety issue for me, as well as the children who live on and around my street.

Thank you,
A Concerned Salisbury Citizen

with the crime being as bad in Salisbury as it has been lately, I welcome the police officers speeding around. They need to be in 10 places at once to try to deter criminals. There are not nearly enough of them to do the job properly to keep crime down. It's going to get worse.

Hi Joe!
Maybe you can help me. The last couple of weeks I have noticed a car with a female driver who is not paying attention to what color the light is because she is on her cell phone and putting on make up while driving. If she is in fact not much to look at, I appreciate her putting on make up, but if she could possibly do it in the light and not while driving it would great. I have noticed that the light at 50 and civic is almost always green but she keeps stopping because she is not paying attention. I think it is the same car, it has a "I hug trees" bumper sticker on the back.
Thank you,
a disgruntled driver

I've read this theory on this blog several times now that if police speed they increase their odds of catching a bad guy. Since catching bad guys is more a practice of being in the right place at the right time (there's a degree of luck involved), it seems the better practice would be to patrol slowly in troubled areas so you don't fly past a bad guy doing a bad thing.

nursing student?? well it seems like your complaining to the wrong person. thats like me complaining to delmarva power when my car wont start up. lets look into this a bit more. your a nursing student, at wor-wic, after class you usually sit on the porch, LATE at night for a while and read. 1. more than likely your not a student. 2. you sit on the porch and read late at night. so you leave messages like this instead of doing the correct thing by calling in the pd. NAA your not a nursing student because nursing students are smarter than this wanker. and NO calls come in complaining about this. I KNOW, so get off your high horse.

10:08 Ever tried calling into a state police barrack to report something? They go out of their way to talk their way out of responding to a call, or say they'll get someone to take a look when they can. They give you the impression they're doing you a favor. When you call to complain about a trooper, they dismiss you as if you're a nut. Never interacting with Salisbury P.D. I have no clue how responsive or dismissive they are to the community.

This is true because I have seen them do this too, not only at night but during day time, if I'm not mistaken, I have seen the one puu up to the apartments across the street from WI HI

I pass people all the time on the road doing dumb stuff.Last Wednesday on Route 13,I was sharing the highway with a GMC Yukon travelling from Deal Island Road to the Route 12 exit on bypass(driver you know who you are!)and along the way this dumb girl had the visor down, applying makeup in the mirror and not even looking at the road.

Didn't you read all the news about police officers no longer being able to respond to calls with lights or sirens unless its a life at stake? Which means, if your home is being broken into police can not use lights and sirens to get there because your life is not at stake unless they are trying to kill you. Wouldn't you want police to speed alittle to get to your home?

10:08 has obviously never been to college... the good students study all the time, and when it's hot inside your crummy apartment you take it to the deck since the library is closed...

Why doesn't the poster contact someone who can help instead of complaining on a blog that can't help? If you are a college student you should be able to figure that one out. Before you say anything smart about me I go to Wor Wic also.

10.08 hopefully you or a loved one will not be the victims in an accident involving one of those speeding police cars you idiot

Just another case of it it weren't for the police there would be no crime.

"If you call the cops on a cop don't EVER need a cop again in your life time. They will not respond to your true call for help." a comment told to my father when he reported cops speeding down our road. Just a heads up

Hi. I am the student who sent this letter to Joe. Yes I AM a student at Wor-Wic and I maintain a 4.0 GPA so please do not insult my intelligence. It's easy to be mean behind the cloak of anonymity. And I have gone to the police station to ask about this. As with most things around here, when a citizen has a complaint/question about the way something is done I was given the brush off. I was not aware that they were no longer to use their top lights when responding and I did say in my letter if they were going to a call it was one thing and I do appreciate their rush. But when I get home from class and my brother is home being very loud inside, I do sit outside and study and I see this happen all the time. It was merely a letter to get some better information because I was unable to get any from the station when I went up there to ask the same question.

Thank you.
Amanda
