New Postal Rates Starting May, 11th

A First Class letter stamp will rise to 44 cents on May 11th but you can still purchase Forever Stamps until then for 42 cents each.

Gas goes down, the USPS rates go up. When is the last time you saw a new Post Office? The fact of the matter is, their business, (much like the Daily Times) has gone down due to the Internet and they claim they lost $2.8 Billion last year.

Its called a Depression Folks. Our Government won't admit it because they want you to feel all comfortable with your money until the big crash/announcement. Well, we've already had the big crash and from the looks of things with all these bailouts, an announcement won't be coming any time soon. They'll play games with us until almost everyone is flat broke.

In the mean time, watch Congress continue feed the wealthy and bail out these crooks that should be in jail instead. Now these Executives are worrying about how much the President will allow them to make a year.

Doesn't seem ironic how the Postal Service can lose $2.8 Billion in one year and they're not in line for a bailout. How many others smell a skunk?

Any more news about them cutting a day from delivery?

They're discussing a 5 day work week and have cut back hours.

What gets me is they cry that revenue is down because of email and paying bills on line. Now I am no economics or business major but doesnt that translate into less mail being carried/paid for whioch in turn should mean less operating expenses? Also, when shipping a package you almost have to jump thru hoops with a blank box, the right tape, and play 20 questions. FedEx and UPS are just so much easier.

Hey Steve, sounds a lot like the Salisbur Fire department and the Tilghman Administraion all in one, doesn't it?

While they have given serious consideration to the 5 day delivery week, its a misconception that this would be a "5 day work week". The postal service is a 24/7 operation. Most central offices (including Salisbury), process and transport mail 365 days a year, 24 hours a day (yes even christmas and other major holidays that you don't receive delivery at your house). Also, they receive absolutely no funding from the government. They are a 100% self-sustaining operation. In addition, this past year Congress forced the postal service to pay forward their pensions and retirements before their standard operating costs, so that workers were guaranteed their money (unlike some major corporations who have left their employees hanging after 30 years of service).

Still, given all things considered, 44 cents for someone to take my letter to anywhere in the country within a few days is quite the bargain.

Steve, you're assuming a decrease in service and labor to go along with their decrease in mail volume. That's not the case. They can't downscale certain operating expenses and still get the job done. For example, they drive a truck from Baltimore to Easton every day, whether it has 5 tons of mail or 3 tons of mail on it. They have to make that same drive every day, requiring the same manpower and cost, despite carrying half the volume.
Also, when it comes to delivery, they go to every address in the U.S. every single delivery day. Even if you aren't receiving mail, they check every single box to see if you're sending something out. Neither UPS or Fedex does that. EVERY house, EVERY business, EVERY apartment, EVERY condo, etc. If it has an address, a carrier makes a visit there every single day during normal business hours.

That sounds like a hell of a service to me.

Anon 6:29 that all makes perfect sense to me never thought about it like that. I do agree with someone else who said 44 cents to go anywhere is a major bargain. I sent tons of letters and packages to my girlfriend/wife (the same person you freaks) in the past and never lost a one. As far as stopping at every box I doubt that. I mailed a postcard to salisbury once as a joke in the middle of winter and it took almost 2 weeks to get there. I am sure it wasnt picked up for a few days. I feel overall they do a decent job but it is like anything else there is no accountability and when things are tight they feel like throwing more money at the problem will solve everything. Jack it to 50 cents so I dont have to hear them bitch in 2 years.
