Sen. Tom Harkin with Senate President Harry Reid

Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, has become the second U.S. senator in a week to endorse a return to the ideas behind the so-called "Fairness Doctrine," a plan that was abandoned under President Reagan in 1987 as unnecessary and unconstitutional.

The plan, originally introduced in 1949, demanded that radio
and television stations give "equal" time to conservative and liberal opinions on political issues under the threat of penalties or license revocation.

According to a report at Politico.com, Harkin told radio host and WND columnist Bill Press, "We gotta get the Fairness Doctrine back in law again."

WND had reported just days earlier when Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., told Press, "I think it's absolutely time to pass a standard. Now, whether it's called the Fairness Standard, whether it's called something else – I absolutely think it's time to be bringing accountability to the airwaves."

They might have had an argument back when the "Fairness" Doctrine came about, but in today's world there are enough liberal media outlets to more than compensate for conservative radio. Radio companies are in a business to make money. If people actually listened to liberal radio, they would have higher ratings and the radio stations would play them. That is simply not the case. Again, people listen to conservative radio!

Does this include print media such as the Daily Slime?

This means that the public could demand a conservative across from Keith Olberman or equal time following his show. Liberals are about to find out it works both ways.

I thought we already had a "Fairness Doctrine"? It is called two things, the on/off switch or the button to change stations. Free speech only counts when it is speech they agree with.
I don't need the govt. "balancing" my info. I am capable of deciding on my own.

Talk radio is a business just like any other ,liberal radio has tried and failed it's still a free market or was. It's like saying you can have a business but if your competitors are sinking you have to give them half of your business.

radio free means exactly that. there's no prevention of anyone hosting his or her own show even without this fairness doctrine.
it's all about who can get the most listeners and moola.
what sponsor would pay mucho dinero for a show by al bore?

Actually it doesn't. They aren't stupid. It only applies to talk radio, the only media sourse that is not in the tank for them.
