I’ve waited nearly a week to see if anything was going to be reported to the public about the recent spill at the WWTP. Although the claims are it was a small spill, roughly 500 gallons, a spill of untreated sewage is still a spill. I couldn’t find a thing in the Daily Times through their search engine nor could I find anything on WBOC’s website. However, WMDT did put up a little blurb stating the spill was very small and none of it reached the river. LIARS!!!! I seriously doubt they would have known anything about it had a passerby not called them and told them the sh!t was flowing once again from the WWTP.
After WMDT received a call from a passerby that witnessed this spill they in turn called the GOB. Jim Caldwell verified the spill and contacted the press stating “the discharge would not require public posting”. In other words, KEEP IT TO YOURSELF DO NOT BROADCAST.
Now, if none of this untreated crap went into the river why did Tom Mesick tell Dave Winslow ROUGHLY 500 gallons of sewage was lost into the storm drain at North Side Pump Station? If the crap went into the storm drain it went into the river, end of story. Are we to believe they sent someone into the drains to scoop it up? Sure they did, I’ll bet Bubba was right in there with a shovel in hand. NOT! According to Dave Winslow the SCADA system was totally shut down at the North Side Pump Station AND at the South Side Pump Station therefore no control and no monitoring of these stations. He also said there were no pumps running at North Side Pump Station. Dave Winslow and the rest of that crew might want to be thankful those pumps were down; otherwise we could have had yet another major spill into the Wicomico River. In case you haven’t heard, the river is near death and they want to keep a spill quiet because it was only 500 gallons…ROUGHLY. How can they estimate anything when their monitoring systems were down? These people are so full of sh!t they stink worse than the WWTP.
The following information was gathered from Daily Times articles I’ve saved, accuracy is questionable considering I’m using them as a source.
December 18, 2007 the Daily Times reported close to 900,000 gallons of sewage was spilled in the first 3 quarters of 2007.
February 7, 2008 173,000 gallons of sewage is spilled.
February 9, 2008. The Wicomico River is closed.
March 25, 2008 The Wicomico River is closed.
March 26, 2008 28,000 gallons of sewage dumped through the storm drain.
June 17, 2008. An estimated 21,037 gallons of sewage is spilled.
June 17, 2008 The Wicomico River is closed.
June 19, 2008. An estimated 48,140 gallons of sewage is spilled.
Since the attitude is and it might be a rule of MDE, they don’t have to post publicly when smaller spills occur it’s anyone’s guess, other than Barrie Tilghman and her flunkies at Public Works, exactly how much has actually been dumped into the river since the last major spill. What’s 500 gallons of raw sewage here and there into a dying river?
Makes me wonder, if that passerby hadn't called WMDT would we know anything about this spill? Obviously, NOT

This really is nothing. Check out New York City:
"More than 27 billion gallons of raw sewage and polluted stormwater discharge out of 460 combined sewage overflows (“CSOs”) into New York Harbor each year."
When it comes to very small spills like this, the old saying "dilution is the solution to pollution" definitely applies. So says Bush's EPA, anyway.
Joe, that wasn't a spill from the treatment plant, the Mare had visited Bubba, and after a few words, the poop came gushing out! I think once they are both gone, the river will clean up nicely.
So, let's get this right, because Salisbury is not spilling near the amount of sewage that New York City is, it's not a problem?
I cannot believe you said that!
It is a problem, no matter how big or small. The point is: It's not supposed to happen...period!
The brand new, not quite 2 year old monitoring system was down? Who is responsible for monitoring the system that monitors the plant?
here is a website to view spills in maryland

Anon 3:52 you must work for Public Works to even consider comparing NYC to Salisbury. No wonder we have so many spills with idiots like this at the helm.
Any spill is to much especially since the reports are out for this year. The river is in worse shape than last year and was worse last year than the year before. So because it was roughly 500 gallons it's ok? Maybe you should go live in NYC where they don't have a problem with the pollution of their water ways. I have a problem with it here in Salisbury, a very big problem.
I don't care about spills in NYC, its the spills here that concern me. Here we spent, what $80 million on a new plant and we still have problems. Could I suggest we fire the whole crew at Public Wrks and start it all over again. While we're at it, lets dump the Mayor too!
who gives a crap!!
604 many of us give a crap and then some. Maybe you'd like to take a swim in the Wicomico? Take your kids or your dog swimming or fishing in the Wicomico?
Can I get anyone some raw oysters? As far as NY spills go, does anyone eat anything that comes out of the East River?
Fish with liasons, large fish kills. The Chesapeake Bay is sick, it's still in a condition where we don't have to let it become a East River.
