The fire department is now at this address responding to a fire in the upper floor. Neighbors say smoke was pouring from all of the shingle seams. The place was ventilated from the roof by the ladder truck and a chainsaw, and the fire knocked down. Damages are yet to be assessed. The property is a rental, approved in the spring for four residents from the previous three. Students had evidently vacated the building last week. Cause is yet to be determined.
T.J. Maloney and his girlfriend were there to watch the proceedings.

Just a simple question. I truly do not know the answer. As a property owner in the city ,how does one change from 4 to 3? I'm curious because some of the original proponents of this measure live several houses away.

The answer to your question is that none of the zoning laws are enforced if you are a member of SAPOA or a friend of the mayor. What Maloney did is to get approved to have 4 (which means in fact 8) residents in a house in an area zoned single family residential. Your tax dollars go to pay the city attorney to defend the landlords in these cases. We need a new administration, one that cares about the tax paying citizens rather than absentee landlords. This is the second fire on this street in a couple of months.
This house has an interesting history. The former owner was a single mom and nurse at the hospital. The heating oil tank was in the basement.Cato Oil overfilled the tank and it ruptured spilling fuel oil{about 300 gallons) into the basement. A private environmental group hired by the homeowner designated it as a registered toxic spill in Maryland. All of the woodwork in the house was permeated with Benzene( just one of the many lovely toxins associated with petroleum) Men assigned to clean up this spill lost bowel and bladder function while doing so. The homeowner had to vacate, all of her belongings were ruined. Local government let Cato off the hook. Mysteriously the faulty fuel gauge that prevented overflow disappeared. A paltry settlement was reached many years later.The house to be auctioned but at the last minute East Coast R&R suddenly owned it, slapped new paint inside and out, added those lucky"stars" landscaped and viola-- In the meantime local city officials ignored the advice of the other independent New England based environmental group and deemed this house safe for inhabitants, after the first determination that in order to truly eradicate the toxic damage the ground would have to excavated underneath for many feet, as well as replacement of all wood. Long story short it is no wonder the house went up quickly, it was pre-soaked in petroleum fumes. Ten or twenty years from now when any of the former tenants develop bladder or bowel or brain cancer they will never suspect it could have been from living in this house. Sleep well landlords!!
Pretty convenient that it burned right after the kids left but in plenty of time to fix up for next fall!!And how does one get exemption from 4-2 years after the deadline? Have Richard Insley as the "decider" Is it great for Salisbury slumlords or what!!
Thank you very much for the response 4:53 but how did he get approved? If that part of the city isn't what the 4-3 or 2 is for than where in the city is? The owners ,I doubt, could claim financial hardship. Was there anyone opposed to their application? Sorry for all the questions, but I moved about 3 years ago and am more than just little stunned.

I can say this with certainty. There is no finer human being on this earth than the former president of Cato Oil. He is Mike Abercrombie Sr. It would be hard to imagine that he would knowingly participate in any immoral or unethical coverup.
seems that not too long ago I heard the same uplifting words about Ray Lewis......"he would never dump human shit in a farm field - he's an honorable, respected businessman" hahaha.
Anon 5:39--The oil overfill was an accident, it was not an accident that the driver responsible was fired almost immediately, and that the faulty gauge disappeared. Believe what you want, but a hardworking single mom that spent many many years working hard as a nurse and helping many many patients, well she lost everything.Because in Salisbury it is virtually impossible to be treated fairly if you are up against one of the wealthy elite. Just the facts.
a navel academy graduate, a decorated veteran, a nuclear engineer, a devoted father, a community activist,etc....doesn't seem to be any resemblance to Mr. Lewis. Don't take my word for it..look it up.
