Board Approves Administrative Appointments, Hears About Transfers For 2008-09

The Wicomico County Board of Education at a special meeting Tuesday, May 27, approved several promotions and was briefed on a number of transfers for school administrators for the 2008-09 school year.

All of the appointments and transfers are effective July 1. The new principal and vice principals are assigned as follows:

Michael Collins, principal of Glen Avenue Elementary School. Collins has served as assistant principal of Pemberton Elementary School for the past three years, and was a teacher at Preston Elementary School in Caroline County from 2001-05. He is an adjunct instructor for Sojourner-Douglass College, the county representative to the Maryland Association of Elementary School Principals Executive Board, and founder and co-coordinator of the school systems County Math 24 Game Tournament. He received his bachelors degree in elementary education in 2001 and his masters degree in school administration in 2003, both from Salisbury University, and is a 2010 doctoral candidate in educational leadership at Wilmington College. At Glen Avenue Elementary, he takes over from Principal Jan Conway, who is retiring.

Paula Miller, assistant principal of Pemberton Elementary School. Miller has served as curriculum planner and school test coordinator for Pocomoke High School for the past two years, and has also been an instructional coach grades 4-8 and a science teacher, both at Pocomoke Middle. This promotion is a return to Wicomico County for Miller, who taught math at Salisbury Middle in 2001-02. She received her biology pre-medicine degree from University of Maryland Eastern Shore in 1999, and her masters degree in education from University of Maryland College Park in 2005.

Amy Eskridge, principal of Salisbury Middle School. Eskridge has served as assistant principal at James M. Bennett High for the past two years, and prior to that was a dean of students for two years and a special education teacher for 11 ½ years. She received her bachelors degree in Education of the Exceptional Child K-12 from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and her masters degree in education (guidance and counseling) from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. She has served as a class advisor, peer mentor, and a lead on the Smaller Learning Communities/Freshman Academy initiative. Eskridge will take over as Salisbury Middles principal from Michael Cody, who is transferring to the principal post at Pittsville Elementary and Middle.

Kelley Morris-Springston, principal of Choices Alternative Learning Center. Morris-Springston has served as acting principal of Choices since earlier this year, when she was transferred from Wicomico Middle School. She had served as an assistant principal of Wicomico Middle for six years, and had previously taught middle school computer science/keyboarding for nine years. Morris-Springston received her bachelors degree in business education from York College of Pennsylvania and her masters degree in school leadership and instruction from Wilmington College.

Ida Liza Hastings, assistant principal of Bennett Middle School. Hastings is currently serving as dean of students at Wicomico High School, a position she has held for the past two years. She was a Wicomico County high school teacher for seven years and an elementary teacher for one year. She received her bachelors degree in history from Washington College, and completed a masters degree in administration and supervision at Salisbury University in May 2008. She will fill an assistant principal vacancy left by transfers (details below).

The Board also heard about the following transfers:

Michael Cody, principal of Pittsville Elementary and Middle School. Cody is currently serving as principal of Salisbury Middle School. He will replace Principal Joyce Dunn, who is retiring.

Ron Greene, assistant principal at Bennett Middle. Greene is currently serving as assistant principal of Mardela Middle and High School.

Ike Humphrey, assistant principal at Wicomico Middle. Humphrey has served as assistant principal at the school since February.

Kim Pinhey, assistant principal of James M. Bennett High. Pinhey is currently serving as assistant principal of Bennett Middle. She will fill the vacancy at JMB left by the promotion of Amy Eskridge.

Lillian Blake, assistant principal of Wicomico High School. She is currently serving as assistant principal of Bennett Middle School. She will fill the vacancy created by the transfer of Shawn Gardner from Wi-Hi.

Shawn Gardner, assistant principal of Mardela Middle and High. Gardner is currently serving as assistant principal at Wicomico High and will take on the same role at Mardela, filling the vacancy created by the transfer of Ron Greene.

About a week ago, the blog had a post about the two principals who are slated to be mentors next year. They are the two women mentioned in this article as retiring.

Yes, these two mentors for the newly appointed principals and unsuccessful present principals may improve the operating principals with some extra help but you have to talk with the teachers at the schools the retiring principals left to really get a true picture of their success and teacher recommendations. Who knows better than the teachers that taught this past year under them. Need I say more???Bet you a dollar these new positions become permanent ones in next years budget that will require new money??

Finally a wonderful, caring, compassionate V.P. at Mardela just what we needed and now he is leaving....Hate to see you go Mr. Greene you really are a rare breed of the administrators we have these days.
