Are Some Dogs More Dangerous? State Is Urged to Shed ‘Outdated Stereotypes’

Companies would not be allowed to charge higher homeowners or renters insurance premiums for families who own certain breeds of dogs if a bill being considered by the Maryland General Assembly becomes law.

The measure would benefit people who own Rottweilers, pit bulls and other animals with reputations — unfounded in the view of many — for being more of a public safety threat than other breeds.

Senate Bill 647 is supported by animal-welfare organizations. Representatives of several of the companies that underwrite insurance policies in Maryland oppose the legislation.

It was introduced by Sen. Katherine A. Klausmeier (D-Baltimore County).

I don't care what you say about Love and Socialization. My neighbor just the other day was walking her dog on a leash and two pits on leashes overwhelmed their owner and chewed up her dog. The dog was fine after a visit to the vet and stitches but the pits owner had no control over them at all and now is worried to death after animal control complaints and a lawsuit.

It's the owner not the dog. (map)

Just like some dogs were bred for physical traits, some were bred for aggression. Pits, Rotties, and Chihuahuas are these breeds. So, yes, they are more inherently agressive. Chihuahuas can be punted if they attack you, not so much with the Pits and Rotties.

Is that "Lee Greenwood" as in "God Bless the USA"?

Rottweilers weren’t bred for aggression, they are herding dogs. Big and strong though, if abused can hurt people. Just like people. Please don’t talk if you don’t know things.

Another subject that brings out the uninformed. I have owned 5 Rottweilers and none have been aggressive towards anyone unless provoked. I always had control of them even when they were in our yard running loose. If you provoke an animal they will react. People are the reason for 99% of the attacks from an animal. Animals take after the owners personality. All breeds including cats are dangerous so quit labeling the ones you dislike.

Everyone knows that drug dealers use pitbulls for security. No animal should be breed to be an attack dog. Also be individuals receiving financial assistance from the Government should not be allowed to have pets. Taxpayers should only be required to support needy poor families and their children.

8:28 Yes it is provocation. The issue with that is dogs with q high prey drive i.e. pit breeds, can be provoked by many things and very easily. Things such as a child sitting many feet away from it playing with a toy, a sudden movement of an otherwise excellent pet owner, children the dog never laid eyes on before walking several hundred feet away. This has nothing to do with how the dog is raised. It is the dogs inherent trait and you can not love or train an inherent trait out of a dog.
